So point (c) is the relevant one with the free kick in that 2nd quarter. I thought McGrath was trying to make it accidentally-on-purpose slide off the side of his fist so he could pretend he was trying to handball to his team mate.

He got pinged for (c). He took possession, turned took a couple of steps and slipped over. Even after slipping over, he had the option to handball to a team mate.

He had time and space to dispose of the football and didn't. it was his own action, slipping over that invited the pressure.

18.11.2 Free Kicks - Deliberate Rushed Behinds A field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against a Player from the Defending Team who intentionally Kicks, Handballs or forces the football over the Attacking Team’s Goal Line or Behind Line or onto one of the Attacking Team’s Goal Posts, and the Player:
(a) is greater than nine metres from the Goal Line or Behind Line;
(b) is not under immediate physical pressure;
(c) has had time and space to dispose of the football; or
(d) from a Ruck contest, hits the football over the Goal Line or Behind Line on the full.

The "or" means that you only need to satisfy one of those four criteria to have a free kick paid against you. He satisfied item (c) and so the free kick was paid.

On that basis I understand why it was paid but the only way he could dispose of it was try to give it to someone who was surrounded by the opposition.

So in hindsight he should have attempted to run and in the process run through the goalposts. Or stuff up the handball. He just wasn't that flash in disguising his true intentions.

Going to be a talking point and it's just my view that that's a tough rule in the circumstances he was in.

I see all that.

But if he slipped over when he was going to dispose of it and the opposition was closing in isn't he allowed to take it through ?

Ah I see. He could've disposed of it after he slipped over.

Well he should've dropped it , and knocked it through as the opposition was about to pounce.

I decided to follow WC list rebuild a year before their crash and burn because it was obvious that cliff was coming. And, while I support the Lions, it's freaking boring for a draft nuffie when it's all high end father sons and academy kids. And WC's rebuild is as close to rebuilding from ground zero as we'll see.

And WC BigFooty has enough of a infatuation with Freo, that I don't need to read both boards to follow what is happening at both. If there's a scandal at Freo, it'll get discussed on the WC board.

The call was correct to how the rules are written - he got done on point c rather than point b (which is the one that everyone knows).

But did he really have time and space and that is why i don't believe (C) should have been considered.
I believe that (C) was included for players that obviously have time and space and under no immediate pressure.

The original reason the whole rule came into place was players just walking back over the line in that GF.
I can't remember which team it was maybe the Hawks?.

I usually support the umpires in many of the grey arears of the rules, but i think that was the wrong call.

The game has so many grey arears it's no surprise in what some umpires will pay, and others don't.

However, i don't believe most umpires would have paid a free in that situation.

If it was an important close game or GF and that was paid it would be all over the media, but it is round 1.
Now we have a situation in that the players get more confused and get more nervous around that area of the ground.

I doubt we would be talking about it much at all if it was recorded as a rushed behind, common sense would prevail.
