Those figures should be the blue-print for team distribution. Basically another team in SA, and 3 less in Victoria. 14 team comp.

Vic should only have 8, (9 max) teams.
SA could have another team.
If the Lions were allowd QLD and NT as a "zone", then they would be self suffient in players.
Similarly, Swans are very near self sufficient.
I suspect the QLD numbers will substantially go up after the next draft.

This is exactly why people in SA and WA that are pushing for a third team need their heads read. Per capita SA/WA are stronger football states and with 2 teams in each state this further enhanced. Conversly, with 10 teams in Victoria, per capita and team wise they are weakened. This gives the SA and WA teams a competitive advantage.
Any Crows, Eagles, Port or Freo supporter calling for a new team in their respective state is a total minda. Perceptions that this would reduce the Vic centric power base is moronic. By having another team in either Sa or WA would in fact reduce your own teams power base.

That might be true from a marketing and sponsorship perspective, but it has little to do with the number of players. Remember - there is no zoning anymore! As a young undrafted footballer in WA or SA, you are much more likely to end up in Victoria than your home state.
The only real competitive advanatge is that the SA and WA clubs get better "local knowledge" about draft picks.

Based on those 2004 figures, you could argue Vic could support 9 squads. Simply because most Tassie players would want to play in Melbourne so can be combined with Vic's total.
Although its all a bit meaningless. Player aquisition via the draft doesnt give two hoots where the players come from.
Corporate sponsorship doesnt really care where the teams come from either as most are national brands, although it would slant towards Sydney.
Fan base is probably a better measure. Put the teams where the fans are, or will be.
