Official AFC Player Projection Rating 2008

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

10 - A player for the ages, one who can do things with a football that no other player would even contemplate doing.

Very, very few players will be deserving of this rating, probably one per decade.

Think Wayne Carey, Leigh Matthews, Chris Judd, Luke Jericho.

Nice try to slip an unworthy one past us there CC. ;)

I was awake though - what's Matthews doing in there.

Outstanding effort there fellas.

Whether you're out a smidgeon here and there is irrelevant - it was a great read. :thumbsu:

One thing it did highlight though, the club has a shit-load of quality young talent coming through. :)

Great work guys!
Top stuff.

Well done with the Jerico one too... good one there;)

And no Porps???
Hes 23..unless your doing under 23...

We thought about doing Porps, but I think he is just such a 'known' that it wasn't worth it. We were more after giving people an insight into the potential the club has.

We probably would've given him a 8.5/A.

Great work guys:thumbsu: Can't argue with much of that, only that as others have pointed out, I think you may have underrated the potential of Douglas and Mackay, both look to be natural footballers and whilst may be slight, I think they will learn to work around this by working to their strengths and both will develop into "8" class players at least.

Fantastic stuff guys. I loved the write ups and I agreed with most of the rankings.

Personally, for a few of the guys I would've given a higher number, but a lower letter. Someone like Cook, Petrenko, Kite (I'm starting to swallow my pride with him) and maybe even Tippett have a higher potential than you give them credit for IMO, but in turn this would effect their probability of reaching it. For example, I feel you did this perfectly with Sellar's rating.

Once again, awesome job. :thumbsu:

Brilliant reading.
Deserves a sticky.

Genuine honest appraisals of where our young talent is at. The temptation would have been to talk them up no end or bag them out completley but the job you boys have done is right on the money.

It would be nice for us to find another 9 along the way. IMO All the premierships side of recent times would have at least two of them. Using your scale though id probably have Ablett about at 9.5B with the a strong majority of the rest of the geelong side falling into 8.0-8.5 category.

From this i imagine any draft and trading discussion can be much more logically based as we now have a strenghts/weaknesses guide to work with. In saying that, we probably have the strongest needs for a small forward, running defender, pacey midfielder and key forward. In that order id suggest

Excellent work - and a future & ongoing reference point

The only problem now is that the boss is wondering why i dont get much work done :D

Below is a comprehensive review of every player aged 23 or under on our list. Rankings are based purely on potential. Pointing out that Douglas who has played nearly 30 AFL games is surpassed by Walker who is yet to play a game is futile. I will probably update the list every fortnight where I can adjust the rankings and grades accordingly. Feel free to comment on the order of the players, the rankings/grades or any comments I have made. I will shuffle a few players and grades around if everyone thinks I’ve made poor calls. You don’t have to read each player review, but at least note their grade and see how you feel. I don’t believe I’ve got the feeling a few of my rankings are a little too lenient, but that’s for you to decide.

Traditional Realistic Potential Rating (1-10) (a player's realistic potential ability):

10 - A player for the ages, one who can do things with a football that no other player would even contemplate doing. Very, very few players will be deserving of this rating, probably one per decade. Think Wayne Carey, Leigh Matthews, Chris Judd, Luke Jericho.

9 - Possesses the potential for greatness, a perennial All Australian throughout his career. Think Scott West, Warren Tredrea, Brent Harvey, Matthew Pavlich.

8 - Players with definite skill that might be just a cut below elite status, but still possessing All Australian potential. Think Alan Didak, Peter Burgoyne, Brett Kirk.

7 - Players probably not quite good enough to be All Australian but still possessing enough talent to contribute in their positions on a regular basis. Think Josh Carr, Tyson Stenglein, Sam Fisher.

6 - Players whose abilities aren't quite good enough to be amongst the first selected, but will likely play all 22 games without muss fuss. Think Michael Doughty, Brent Staker, Nick Maxwell, Leigh Fisher.

5 - Players that are played sparingly will fill in for injured players, or have some ability to play AFL but are mostly very good SANFL players. Think Jaymie Graham, Damon White, Bryce Campbell.

4 - Players unlikely to have long careers in the AFL, but will be called upon when injuries or other circumstances arise.

3 - Players who will in all likelihood will spend their entire careers in the SANFL.

2 - Players who populate the SANFL and have virtually no shot of making it to the AFL.

1 - Players one step away from amateur leagues.

(the player's realistic chances of achieving their potential):

A - All but guaranteed to reach potential - 100 percent metaphysical certitude that the player will play up to his abilities as noted by his potential rating.

B - Should reach potential, could drop 1 rating - likely to reach potential, but may have a hole or two in his game that will keep him from reaching his full potential.

C - May reach potential, could drop 2 ratings - has shown some flashes, but may ultimately not have what it takes to reach his potential.

D - Unlikely to reach potential, could drop 3 ratings - a player who has a chance to reach his potential but is unlikely to do so.

F - A player possessing little potential who has a mountain to climb just to reach the outermost boundary of that potential. A player that has little mental courage to break through.

i like the whole post but i have 1 question this may have been put in here for a joke but i dont no. y is jericho is the same think with carey, matthew and judd?

Jericho has been dominating for years, do you think hes a rookie or something?

Judd could learn alot from Jerichos goal scoring abilities.

I mean come on, Judd's a good player and all but he's a midfielder. He's not there winning the game off his own boot like Y2J.

A team full of Jerichos would beat a team full of Judds any day.

..............................is this a serious post........................

surely not!
It is. Why would you think that we are speaking facetiously when talking about one of the all time greats of the AFC, and dare I say, the AFL?

I'd love to see an end of year update.....hopefully it couyld occur after the last sat in september as that will be our last game :)

VB, Maric should go up and possibly Otten has shown enough potential to go up.

James Sellar should go up to 10A now I think, he has so proved everyone wrong.
