There are a few more clubs out west now, but it seems since COVID, playing numbers are falling off a bit, especially in the seniors. East Coast used to be far too strong, but now they've got less numbers and bigger gaps between their teams. E.g. one team in Div 5, the next in Div 2 and then Reserves then Prems. A few injuries in the Prems and the rest of the club struggles as players who aren't up to the standard, are picked two/three division's above where they play.

I know in 2009 when I stopped in the juniors, we (Hills, now Parramatta, Lions) were in a competition with the likes of Camden, Blue Mountains and various other clubs within a 60-90 minute radius. It was the same in the age groups above like U16's, but due to lack of numbers, a couple of teams who were nearby to each other merged for this age group.

I can't speak for the junior clubs side of things on how it stands today, but I know when I was last involved with AFL NSW/ACT + GWS in 2018, junior club numbers in the West seemed to be increasing. Kids could barely name one GWS player, too, and this was when GWS were supposed to be doing a lot of school/club visits with players. And when they did, they sent their big names to well-established junior clubs like Baulkham Hills, while struggling clubs in the proper west like Penrith and Blue Mountains got rookies who hadn't even played a game yet. From my point of view, they couldn't care less about the struggling clubs. Facilities at these clubs, Penrith especially, are barely passable.

And for a lot of those kids out west in lower socioeconomic areas, it's tough to commit to the Academy if they are selected. It can be expensive and costly for the families to go back and forth 2-3 nights a week, as well as the weekends.
When I was coaching juniors in Western Sydney 2012-2015 I always felt like GWS were more interested in recruiting members than actually making a genuine effort to develop the game in area.

.

Max Rider has the best name.

What sort of player is he?

52 and 60 for Sandy are from my club , great kids , the other one who is bottom age Luke Kennedy has been taken by Sandy VFL tomorrow , remember the name
My boys kicked 3 and did well . Caught up later and they said the Swans boys were very tough .
For some perspective the Sandy team was a fair bit away from their best with 7 debutants

Swans vs Dragons scouting notes

SWANS ACADEMY:

#9 Joe Harrison
Midfielder | 182cm | 20/07/2006

Stats:
23 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles

The midfielder was in everything for the Swans with hard running through the middle, transition run out of defence, and penetration down to the forwards. Clean and precise at stoppages, he created chances when there might be nothing and hunted the taps at stoppages, waiting for his opportunity to pounce on the ball. His kicking lacked polish at times, but his hard work in the middle was a driving force towards the Swans’ win.

#12 Max Rider
Forward | 187cm | 28/08/2005

Stats:
16 disposals, 7 tackles, 4 goals

The over-ager was the difference in this game. Playing high half-forward, Rider’s brute force and pace were almost unstoppable when charging on the lead. He had plenty of opportunity in the forward 50 early, missing a few shot that he would’ve wanted a second go at. He did make up for those mistakes later in the game, scoring a great outside of the boot goal that ultimately helped win Sydney the game. His high IQ and athleticism allowed him to move into the midfield at times, giving his team versatility in a tough battle.

#19 Zachary Nandlal
Midfielder | 171cm | 30/01/2006

Stats:
21 disposals, 5 tackles, 4 rebound 50s

The small sized, helmet wearing midfielder was at his best against the Dragons. Hard-working with quick hands and fast feet, Nandlal seemed to be involved in every stoppage. There were a few times his first instinct was to bang the ball long and far at stoppages, causing quick turnovers. But in all, it was a solid game all around the ground. Nandlal is a genuine tough nut who is ready for a contested game and tense situation, with pace and class that can flip the game on its head.

#34 Tom Ryan
Tall Forward | 193cm | 24/04/2006

Stats:
11 disposals, 5 marks, 3 goals

Another strong game for Ryan, taking his tally to nine goals in four games and proving the game finisher – winning a huge contested mark in the square in the dying moments and sealing victory for the Swans. He finished with three goals, the third game he’s been able to do so. He has a strong and aggressive lead, throwing himself into the pack, while also kicking from a decent distance – including a great goal from long-range.

#36 Harrison Podmore-Taylor
Ruck | 200cm | 02/03/2005

Stats:
15 disposals, 4 tackles, 12 hitouts

The 201cm over-ager put his size and athleticism on show for spectators. He was more than capable in the air, but it was his speed and ground efforts that really caught the eye. At one stage in the fourth quarter, he was able to grab the ball out of mid-air, spin 180 degrees and bang the ball inside 50. Podmore-Taylor has a natural ruck craft, and the ability to compete in the forward line as an imposing figure that has a ready made body.

So what are the chances that the following are drafted to the Swans:

Joe Harrison
Joel Cochran
Max Rider
Cochran and Harrison I’d say are good chances

Not sure where Rider, and the other over-agers, sit in the scheme of things. If they’re good enough, perhaps it depends on how many rookie spots we end up with?

Agree with this give our picks i feel like we have the ability to use one of our first rounders atleast on a prospect outside of the academy(Hoping for a 4th tall type marking forward). Think Rider much like Podmore Taylor will easily slide into the rookie draft as they are playing well but not exactly lighting it up so if we want to we can pick them up there but honestly can't see them being selected tbh.

Unless they’ve changed the rules (again) I think Edwards has to be elevated to the A rookie list at the end of this season (assuming we keep him, which seems likely at this stage). So that opens up at least one B list spot. Kirk will be evaluated at the end of the season for a second year. We can only fill those spots (realistically) with academy products and Beatson has stated that the club feels obliged to use them that way to provide a pathway.

It remains to be seen who warrants a place on the list AND slips beyond the ND. There seem to be a few candidates at the moment and little clarity on where they sit in the draft pecking order.

Nandlal is very intriguing, is a small size but he could potentially be a good back pocket to fit our new style of play. Feel like he might be underrated just because he is 171cm. Him or Andreacchio could be a good small back prospect to develop 🧐
