SWANS ACADEMY COATES LEAGUE RECAP

RECORD:
2-2, 110.8%
STREAK: LWLW

BEST RESULT:
Round 8 – def. Sandringham Dragons by 10 points

While there was inconsistency in Sydney’s results from game to game, to beat both of last year’s grand finalists was no mean feat. The Swans first knocked off Eastern by 58 points, then broke the undefeated premiership defence of Sandringham in Round 8. Their campaign started with a 10-point loss to Gippsland and Tasmania also got the better of them, but their wins were outstanding.

STAT LEADERS:
Disposals – Nicholas Andreacchio (24.0)
Marks – Lachlan Carmichael (6.0)
Tackles – Declan Fitzpatrick (8.3)
Inside 50s – Ned Hawkins (6.0)
Rebound 50s – Nicholas Andreacchio (4.0)
Hitouts – Harrison Podmore Taylor (13.7)
Goals – Tom Ryan (9 total)

ALLIES SQUAD MEMBERS: Nicholas Andreacchio, Lachlan Carmichael, Noah Chamberlain, Joel Cochran, Joe Harrison

DRAFT-ELIGIBLE TALENT:

A trio of top-age Swans earned their spots in the Allies squad after strong Coates Talent League performances. National Academy member Joel Cochran was perhaps the safest bet to do so, but came into his own as a mobile tall defender with three 18-disposal games.

He’s joined in representative colours by skipper Joe Harrison, a hard-working midfielder, and rebound defender Nicholas Andreacchio. Former Allies Lachlan Cabor and Max Rider played their roles up forward, while tall Tom Ryan finished as the side’s leading goalkicker.

Elsewhere, midfielder Ned Hawkins was on track to lead the side in a bunch of key statistical areas before suffering an injury in the Giants/Swans Academies match against South Australia. Fellow over-ager Harrison Podmore Taylor was also solid through the ruck.

THE FUTURE:

The Swans will be particularly happy with the potential of two bottom-agers in Lachlan Carmichael and Noah Chamberlain. The former looked most comfortable down back but spent time in the middle, while the latter is a tall and nimble forward who was also exposed to the wing role.

Though he did not turn out in the 2024 Academy Series, rangy midfielder-forward Max King tore up preseason testing and is one to watch for next year. Kaiden McNamara did manage to get a string of games in and looked promising down back, with potential to play further afield.

Brief notes on Qtr time:

Allies: 5.4 34
SA: 3.2 20

Goals (I think)
Allies - 2 Murphy, 2 Delana, Smith
SA - 2 Bradley, missed the other SA player but was a joe the goose out the back (later found out Nicholls)

Harrison - rotating through wing, centre and HFF by the looks. Not as dominant as in swans u18s and does not seem to be getting a huge amount of time on ball. Has a look alike in Douglas on the allies

Andreacchio - backpocket/hbf. Has gonna in a few chain out of the backs. Hopefully isn't directly against Evans who has been SAs most dangerous forward with two crumbing goals.

Cochran - third tall in the back line. Has been fairly anonymous so far (but so have the SA KPFs)

Murphy, Lombard and Murphy standout for allies IMO

SA
Draper - playing well through the middle - probably a bit samies for us (plus likely a top 5-10 pick)

Bradley - looks a very good small forward, has 2 so far and reading the play exceptionally well.

Welsh and Camporeale twins have got some of the pill but nothing outstanding

Allies 5.4.34 SA 3.2.20 (quarter time)

Allies had most of the play and looked the better side. But their defence looks really shaky. SA were able to score quite easily off their few opportunities.

Did not notice the Swans players that much. Andreacchio (1) and Carmichael (10) seem like small/med defenders. Harrison (9) is in midfield. I have not noticed Cochran (28) yet.

Notes on 2nd qtr:

Allies 7.5 47
SA 5.4 34

Goals qtr 2

Allies
Gallop, Stanley

SA
Newton, Barker

Andreacchio - being used as outlet from HBF. Providing a heap of run and carry for the allies

Carmichael- sighted off of HBF. Not a heap of ball seen but slowly working his way in. Reckon he is suited to a "Hodge" role off of HBF and occassionally rotating in mids

Harrison - not really sighted this qtr, did a few thing but nothing that stood out.

Cochran - won a one on one contest. Covering a heap of ground this qtr. Looks to be beating his direct opponent (think it is Howes) who only has one look at the goals so far

Lombard looks every inch a first rounder
Murphy looks very, very good on the lead.
Annable got moving this qtr, looks a contested beast

Allies i50s not great but not unexpected. Have met only a few days ago

SA
Sharp looks good around the ground.
Camporeale's both getting a heap of ball out back of the contest
Overall, their defence looks far more organised than Allies

Notes on 3rd qtr:

Allies 9.7 61
SA 9.7 61

Goals qtr 3

Allies
Depaoli-Kubank, Uwland

SA
Welsh, Howes, Newton, Bradley

Andreacchio - Playing well in backline. Attacks the contest, good link up play in the backs

Carmichael- not seen much of, tidy when in possession. Taken kick ins and allies team mates trusting him with ball in hand. Has a bit of straight line speed.

Harrison - doing a less glamourous inside role. Provided some run and go early on albeit game his team mates a bit of work with errant handballs. Few up and under kicks, needs to flatten them out. Covers a heap of ground

Cochran - has been able to impact contest and disrupt the SA KPFs. Does the one percenters. Strong contested mark mixed in this qtr

Sulzberger look a good mover but his disposal lets him down
Definitely looking a bit disjointed with connection between backs, mids and fwds not working.

SA
Sharp is pick of SA players so far.
Poor i50s for them and a few favourable frees have let them back in

Would you consider Cochran as a long term prospect? i dont know anything from his draft profile.

Has tools to make it.

Looks like a Rampe replacement to me. Will likely be a few years development away if we do draft him, which will likely be in the second round plus at the moment.

Notes on 4th qtr:

Allies 11.9 75
SA 12.9 87

Goals qtr 4

Allies
Lombard, Murphy

SA
2 Welsh, Howes, Cumming,

Best:
Allies: Lombard, Murphy, Salzberg, Annable
SA: Sharp, Bradley, B Camporeale

Andreacchio - gave away a 50m penalty and cost a shot on early. Subsequently turned it over from kick in. Few neat possies as the qtr went on. Could be a small defender

Carmichael - played off of HBF. Not especially prominent but was suprised to see him rack up 16 possies. Want to seem him rotate onball

Harrison - on ball and got it a few times. Bit of a disappointing game overall. Did not impact around the ball and looked lost with ball in hand at times

Cochran - Very composed. Will annoy a lot of fans if drafted as looks very laconic when moving. Smart positioning against direct opponent. Can get beaten on the lead and did by Howe on a few occasions

I50s need to be worked on, but that will come as they play more together.

Link up play was noticeably better with state based team mates.

SA
Sharp easily best for SA

Do not get the hype about Draper after watching him. Gets the ball but not particularly creative or attacking

Bradley's draft stocks will rise. Looked electric with the ball.

Camporeale twins, especially Ben, get the ball a bit. Seem likely types but not cream of crop type.

Hasting looks good.

Well Rampe was overlooked so many times and was playing Suburban football so anything is possible.

Hard to explain, but seem him as the defensive flip side of Blakey.

Let him lock up a player and occassionally attack.

I tried to watch the game but it became increasingly hard as the commentators' barracking for SA became more and more unabashed.

I presume these guys were employed by the AFL to commentate on a game broadcast on their website. Is it too much to ask them to be professional enough to commentate, not barrack?

It was challenging ro wade through as they obviously knew SA players but took an age to be able to ID allies players
