He used to have such good hands. I mean eevrything thing would stick. It didnt matter if they chopped his arms the umpire wouldn't need to blow the wistle for a free because the mark would stick. However the raging ranga who doesn't mind a fist pump after goal has completely turned his game around...the wrong way though.

Yes Im talking about Mathew Bate and i'll get criticised because he had a good game against Adelaide the week before but it is obvous he is playing crap hard to watch football.

He is very awkward to watch and if and when the ball comes at his knees he fumbles and fumbles and fumbles. His vision is terrible but has actually improved and most of all he doesn't give 100%. He like others (Flash) plays 100% when the game is on the line. Otherwise he breeses through the game. Doesn't tackle when able to and looks out of position a lot. Definetely needs to improve on his defensive work.

Ps. About Aaron davey.
If you ever watch the collingwood draw again you will notice that he puts his ody on the line in the dying minutes. In other games in the dying minutes he will desperately dive and attempt to smother. I wonder why he doesnt do this through the entirety of the game. I almost certain it is because of his Hamstring injury. Although am afraid it was the reason he was picked up in the rookie draft not the normal draft. That reason being that he didn't want to do the defensive work. I am a huge fan of flash and always will be. His skills are freakish ut he needs to find the passion that he plays with through some of the game and maintain it throughout its entirety a la Neville Jetta whom is growing on me every time he steps on the field.

Are you not aware that Aaron Davey did revolutionise defensive forward pressure. Personally I'm more worried about Aaron's ability to find the footy and impact a game, what he does defensive is the least of our worries.

As for Bate, he's an interesting player. He can be so good one week and so quiet the next. However he is still playing as an undersized CHF is a bad team. His season has been up and down, but he's still managed a few best on grounds, including against Adelaide.

Bate is still as inconsistent as he was in his first year, this is now his fifth. Sometimes he looks great out there but sometimes he's bloody awful. He'll only ever be a third option down forward...hopefully Jurrah and Watts come on...soon!

Bate could easily turn into Miller mk II. I really love it when he's up and about but he's such a confidence player. If he gets and early strong mark/goal you know that its pretty likely he'll have a solid game.
Problem is, we are pretty slow to start quarters so he doesnt get the ball delivered to him until about a minute before quarter time, and then there's massive pressure on him to deliver.
I don't think anyone ever thought he'd be a superstar, but we definitely need to see some consistency from him. Calling him a disaster is a bit harsh IMHO, but of course it does provide a nice rhyme for the thread title ;)

Half forward flanker/ borderline key forward playing as just about a lone forward target, double teamed with a midfield that is being beaten in recent weeks. The product of the problem for mine. Not concerned.

He should be pretty lively this week if our midfield gets on top allowing Green to stay forward.

Bate will look better when he isn't the main focus up there. Jack is on the improve and Jurrah is back today so it should be interesting.

Exactly. Unfortunately he's been playing as a centre half forward most games. He's a forward flanker if ever there was one. When we get Jurrah, Petterd and Watts all playing together, I think Bate will show his worth. He's been really inconsistent this year, but a man his size needs delivery, and he hasn't been getting that(especially in the last month or so).

He has played 2 or 3 really good games this year though, but the inconsistency comes down to lack of tall options in our F50, and a lack of a full pre season. He'll be ok...

Bingo!

He missed a fair chunk of the pre season and is target numero uno in our forward line (just about :p)

If we had a J Brown like target in our fwd line I think everything would come together, especially for Bate.

Thought he did pretty well today, and was an important part in the link-up from defense (leading with the flight of the ball to break the zone, and then getting it to green one-out or alone in the 50).

Got better as the game went on. Haven't seen him take a pack mark for a while though and his kicking action gets worse and worse.

He used to have a massive left foot and a pretty good kicking style. He was also slowly working on his right and it got to the point where it was serviceable.

NOW...his left looks disgusting and his right is an instant grubber.

I don't think he's Brad Miller mach 2 but I'm far from sold on him...sorry Merc.

Just having a bad patch. Got a heap better as the game went on today and he started to work harder to get the footy. Some people around here are too quick to jump on blokes. Don't get like other clubs' supporters and become fickle. Bate has been one of our better players through the dark days. Give the kid a break and let him work his way through the bad spell. Other clubs' supporters really rate him. Maybe you blokes should ease up a bit. Don't forget he really is only a leading flanker who has been forced to play key position.

I thought he was at his best today when we broke quickly on the counter-attack, and I think he thrives under quick ball movement more generally as well.

Having said that, though, he has been struggling a bit of late, but I think that is tied to a form slump more than a lack of ability. Further, he's had a few injury issues this year which haven't helped him either.

I still expect him to be a very good player for us in the future.

Didn't you see him kick what should have been the game winning goal from 50 out against the pies on QB? He still has the boot most def.

I thought he was great today even though he didn't snag many. Def looked dangerous and had influence on the game. Like I said, the inclusion has helped.

Yer definetely too critical on Bater now i reflect. However in saying that it does help when your not the number one forward.
1.Green
2.Jurrah
3.Sylvia
4.Bate
5.Bennell
*Johnson took a tall when up forward.

It certainly makes a difference when your playing when your supposed. For Bate that is a lead up forward.
