I got to Whitten Oval well before this started. I decided to sit in the shade at the front of the John Gent stand on the wing. The boys ran out and did a quite extensive warm up. It was pretty warm & the boys took advantage of the small amount of shade at the quarter breaks.

The teams were fairly evenly matched. White & Jamar shared the rucking for the Oranges while Jolly did most of the Lemons ruckwork. Jolly looked very good especially vs Jamar who seems to move quite well & uses his body quite well however his skills let him down. They can be worked on at least.

When they weren't rucking White or Jamar were at Full forward. Both looked pretty good up there taking some strong marks. Jamar's poor kicking let him down a little.

Up the other end The Lemons had Neeta, Greeny, Robbo & Williams. Greeny did very little up forward but looked better on the ball in the 2nd half. Neeta struggled to get the better of Chris Lamb  only kicking 1 goal from memory. Robbo was picked up by Bizza & this duel was fascinating I read elsewhere that someone thought Bizzel got the better of Robbo but I honestly can't remember Bizzell winning a single contest vs Robbo. Williams did OK.

Other players of note were, Whelan, he looked very good until he walked off in the 3rd qtr with what Daniher said was a blister.

Johnstone, he played the whole match & looked good still a bit lazy with his kicking at times.

Michael Clark, Looked pretty solid, his kicking is pretty accurate.

Woewodin, plenty of the ball used it pretty well same goes for Junior.

The Ox, Powell, Nicho, Vardy, Gus & Wardy all didn't participate in the match itself. I assume Walshy was still in Kyenton with his family. Ox & Powell did the boundary umpiring & ran strongly. Nicho (Knee soreness apparently) Jogged laps as did Vardy. Gus & Wardy won't be available for a while, Wardy was walking around in sandals. Rigoni has a very bad back injury apparently & his AFL future is in doubt.

The club got a hold of 3 AFL field umpires for this match but I couldn't recogise any of them except Scott Mclaren.

I think the Oranges won.

Gotta remember that Neeta may not have been pushing too hard, doesn't want to risk injuring himself!

All in all a good report :D

I forgot to mention that Robbo was wearing a small knee brace on his left knee, it didn't seem to affect him though, he looked good.

Yeah since he did something to his knee at training a couple of weeks ago, they have been pretty careful with his knee. I talked to him last week and he said he wasn't all that fit, but that he is getting there and that he will defenetly play! :)
Good to see him and Biz had a good competition going, those two will make to a very interesting watch if they both end up playing in the forward line at some point in the season.
Good to see Greeny getting a bit of a go in the midfield, he is going to apperantly get a good run for his money in the midfield during the Wizard cup.
I'm really happy to see that Clarky is going well, he did have a bit of a hard time with his hand surgery but I'm glad he is doing well... just a question BT where did they play him??
Also I can't see any reason why Neita would struggle against Lamb unless Lamb is really that good.
Oh and one last thing, do you know by any chance if Wardy will be available for the start of the season??

Clark seemed to be playing on the Half Forward Flank/Wing.

I doubt if Ward will be ready by round 1, I don't know why he didn't play but he didn't even have runners & he'd need to be running by now to be fit by round one I'd have thought.

Oh thats a shame about Wardy! :(
Well Clarky can also play in defence so his options are kinda open. I would love to see him play up forward though.... my dream forward line...... Robbo, Brucey and Clarky! :D:D:D

Top report BT.

Just a question - Did you notice David Robbins? Apparently, he impressed in the midfield. I think we picked him up from one of the VFL clubs. Just wondering how you thought he went.

Number 7 umpire was Hayden Kennedy. And McLaren was a GF umpire last year - so at least we got one of the best.

Did you notice David Robbins?

There is no way anyone could have missed David Robbins. He was just outstanding. He comes to us from Springvale in the VFL and won the JJ Liston Trophy for the VFL best player in 2000.

Didnt know you were a Melbourne fan, Footyman.

Thanks for the info on Robbins, I thought he was from Springvale, but wasnt 100%. I hear he's pretty hard at it which is what we lack a bit in our midfield. He should be good. Looking forward to seeing him on Friday night.

No i'm ashamed to say I didn't notice Robbins.

There were a few Sandy players out there. Ryan Szorzi I think, was one he looked ok but got caught out for pace at one stage. There was another young Sandy bloke who went out after Half time & within 2 minutes had his Collarbone broken in a heavy clash (there were quite a few of those!) The Sandy boys were easy to spot because they were wearing Zebra's socks, both teams had at least 2 Sandy boys out there from memory.

I sat just in front of Daniher & Graeme Yeats (Zebra's coach) it was interesting to hear the banter between the two. I enjoyed hearing comments from Neale like "Geez he shouldn't be falling over there" & other little things like that. Danners was yelling out to Daniel Breese (who didn't play btw) to tell Jamar & White when to swap, roughly half way through each quarter.

I read in the paper that Ward has a hammy injury, don't know how serious it is though. They said that Gus has a groin injury even though I'd heard via Demonology that it was a serious back injury.

Yeah Breesy is still nursing himself after the knee reco... shame, he could have had a whole season behind him by now! Oh well such is life! :)
Anyways Gus has a back injury not a groin injury... don't you just love how they always get these little minor details wrong?!

lmao, orki, we of all people should know how the media turn around injuries!!
any ways, about breesy, he still has one more month before he can get fully back into footy, so he's gonna start the first few matches with sandy, and they're gonna ease (note easy, not right away!!) him into the AFL level if good enough - which he IS!! i just hope he gets well soon, and i wish him aaaaaaalll the best!!

Hehehe I'm sure you will be happy to help with feeling the best! ;) :o

Anyways I read that they are planning on going easy with Powelly this season where he will play one game, rest one game, play one game, rest one game etc... so he plays every second week and makes his impact while not risking his injury. I guess thats a reasonable idea BUT it could be very fraustrating especially for him, coz if he finally finds some form he has to rest for a week than get back to the swing of things... Oh well lets hope this system works! :)
