Geez lots of melts about our list on here. Let’s be frank - shi) year - injuries and suspensions galore. We’ve had most of our best forwards out all year. Our list doesn’t need wholesale changes just more depth across the key defensive and forwards posts. Simple. Mids have been good the last 6 year aside from last half last night.
I’m not happy with last night but I don’t think it’s doom and gloom. How the f are you supposed to kick a winning score with Francis and Buller as the KPFS? Add that paps was clearly not right.

I suspect you didn’t watch (or have mercifully forgotten) the GF.

Or the Adelaide game.

Ditto the Gold Coast game.

Or even the (gulp) Essendon game.

To say our mids have been good except for half of yesterday’s game is a tad fanciful.

I’d say we’ve been mostly good, but with a recurring tendency to get blown apart when opposing sides apply real pressure.

I think the problem is that we continue to get blown away on transition and the core of the problem is our pressure and our pressure in the forward 50.

We have our best halves and games in total when we lay a bunch of tackles in our forward 50. We just can't sustain that for long periods. Would also be nice if we could kick straight but I think the second half last night highlighted the problems that having slow wingers and non pressure wingers/midfielders at half forward cause

Yes, the core of our problem is pressure.

But the original post excused the mids (“mids have been good for 6 years except for the last half of last night”).

The mids are as culpable as anyone in the mounting number of embarrassing debacles.

It’s actually the step before we can apply forward 50 pressure. The problem is our forward 50 entries.

If the opposition are intercept marking (as GWS did in 2nd half) our forward 50 entries, we don’t get the opportunity to apply forward 50 pressure.

Our small forwards were not the issue, it was the kicking in 2nd half and the ability for our tall forwards to win or at the very least half a contest.

A lot of our issues stem from our delivery into forward 50.

You seem to be savvy with stats but I dare say there would have been a huge spike in intercept marks from 1st half to 2nd half.

In 2025

+1.4 score differential from defensive half

-4.1 score differential from forward half

-2.7 pressure acts

-4.4 defensive pressure acts

-0.4 tackles inside 50

A lot of our issues are due to having no forward pressure which causes opposition to run straight through us and our TO stats look horrific.

I thought cox was blowing up in the pre season of wanting to lock the ball in the front half and have elite pressure in50

Should have challenged GWS to double 2k time trials around the Olympic stadium precinct

Thanks KB, do you have any data on intercept marks from last night? Or where do you get your stats from?

I get it from Wheelo ratings

Gives a lot of stats, i'm not saying i'm always right but I feel like my team structure argument has had a heavier say on us being terrible than the drop in foot skills.

It's a good site and your work is appreciated

Things aren't so bad
JUH will kick 70 for us next year

No mention of it here so I'm guessing it wasn't picked up in the TV coverage but, Gulden and Mills having a bit of back-and-forth after conceding another in the third.

Didn't look good for either player with Gulden appearing to be overstepping the mark, pointing and lecturing, and Mills just copping it.

Anybody see it? Happened just below me at the ground... maybe I'm reading too much into it but, to me, it wreaks of a worrying lack of unity within the group.

Gulden yells at everyone quite a bit , but who knows what the tone or topic is I guess.

But there's a lot of worrying body language at times , yelling, arguing with each other , stopping to argue with umps

19 intercept marks for GWS (9 for Swans), Himmelberg 4 and Sam Taylor 3, GWS defenders marked our kicks 12 times.

I would say there is a bit of both of our theories at play.

You can’t generate pressure when the opposition is marking and kicking.

102 marks for GWS to 73 for us, which also shows they had greater control of the ball.

They also scored from turnover and from defensive half heavily. Also out scored us from scores from stoppage.

When the ball was in play in 1st half the pressure was very good and we forced a couple of goals through F50 pressure.

We didn’t get the same opportunities in 2nd half as there were less loose balls in F50 and an increase in GWS intercept marking in D50.

Yeah, I know what you're saying. This seemed a bit of an escalation on his normal tho.

Maybe Mills was showing a bit of discretion by not just telling him to f*ck off back to his wing, start hitting a few targets and stop letting blokes break thru his tackles.

Oh absolutely there were a few moments where as it was happening people were blaming others, and it's like they aren't coming back.

Gulden look pissed off, and if we are thinking the same moment yeah looked poor.

14-2 intercept possessions to the GWS KPDs over the Swans KPDs in the second half. I think the structure fell to pieces in the second half when Hamling was injured as Blakey and Mills had to play accountable on talls

Another factor is almost every player has gone from one of their career best years to one of their worst career years.

There's maybe Heeney and one or two others you could say are on par, but really probably could only say Jordon & Grundy have been in better form this year. There's a handful of players like Corey Warner, Sheldrick, Mills who are better by default of just being out on the field.

Most are at an age you'd like to think they could respond with the longer pre-season they're about to get.
