Petracca signs until the end of 2029

Could certainly argue a 5 year extension would have been enough. But negotiations obviously got us to 7. I’m not complaining. To be honest he’ll play into his last year easily barring some bad luck with injury. Jones is 33 and getting a game. I’d say Petracca will be a handy forward/mid at 33.

Jones was carried last year and this year to get to 300 as reward for never once dropping his shoulders through all of Melbourne's drama.

I dont think he is on anywhere near the same coin as Petracca would be in the last 2 years of his contract.

That said its also possible Melbourne front loaded it. Unlike Buddy who seems to get more and more money the less he plays.

I’m more talking he’ll be capable of playing good footy in the final years of his contract. And agree they’ll probably try front load it. But also in the next 7-9 years the cap will go up. Buddy signed his million a year a long time ago.

Last year Cripps was going to be the biggest free agent this year. Would anyone want him now?

Players go off the boil incredibly quick. I would be furious if Hawthorn offered 6 year contracts let alone 7, 8 or 9.

Yeah and Hawthorn suck now.

Were they?

Has anyone from Collingwood said they were very keen? Or just media speculation and trade rumours on BF ?
Where there's smoke there's fire. Sure it was quoted by the media, and particularly, Tony Shaw.

Are you implying Melbourne acted hastily or needlessly in signing him to such a long contract?

He hasn’t got a huge body of work plus has ACL history. Genius from him.
Literally every club in the league would have let Petracca write his own cheque.

and the Dees have probably budgeted on paying for a player not on the field in his last couple of years to get him at he's peak.
He'll be 32 when the contract ends. Few quality players retire before 32.

I think it’ll happen quiet a bit now with the elite players with FA coming into the equation.

He’s 25. The contract is 8 more years *after* 2021. When at the peak of his powers Mark Mercuri signed a 5-year deal at 27yo in 2001 that crippled the Bombers. When at the peak of his powers Kouta signed a 5-year deal at 30yo that crippled the Blues. He’s a gun player, but what is in effect a 9-year deal for a 25yo is irresponsible list management. As an example Brett Deledio barely missed a game up until 29yo… and then barely played after that. Cotchin barely missed up until 29yo and now has chronic hamstrings.

Imagine the Eagles gave their superstar Elliot Yeo a 9-year deal 2-years ago when 25yo … he’d have 7-years to go on $7m and no-one knows if and when he’ll play again. Dollars are fine for Petracca and a long-term deal also a great idea, but 9-years is just lunacy.

It's not 9.

Terrible take. Not sure what you'd call his 2020 season.

Lol Neale won the Brownlow in a canter. No one was even close. Who is giving Neale a 9 year deal. Maybe they should give Oliver and some other 1 year wonder a 9 year deal?

What has Neales form to do with Petracca??
It is a 7 year deal too, your struggling to justify your stupid comment?? :tearsofjoy:

Richmond would never offer a 7 year contract to anyone would they 🤔

It's a sign of confidence from MFC that they are building towards something special, and are willing to take a calculated risk. Petracca is special, he's in rarified form, and he has committed on reasonable coin, he could have played this out for the next 18 mths. It's a further sign MFC are going places in my opinion.
