Player Watch Pick #57 (2023) - Will Lorenz

I hope this bloke isn't another player I like from the seconds that never gets a proper run under Ken. Joel Garner comes to mind.
He never went on to do anything remotely worthy of this status that many on this board keep giving him. After we delisted him, he played for Richmond in the VFL - if he was half as good as ppl make him out to be, he would have been picked up by someone.

That's not really true. There are so many players that have been delisted that could've had a solid AFL career if they were persisted with, that were never picked up again. Look at some of the guys we've gifted 40-60 games to under Ken.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Just because a player doesn't get picked up by an AFL team doesn't mean they couldn't have been worthy of playing AFL and vice versa, I mean for god sakes we've given McEntee nearly 50 games that he doesn't deserve. Garner had better form than Houston ever showed in the SANFL playing the same role. There's no reason outside of Ken playing favourites that he shouldn't have been given a run of AFL games to show what he could do.

What you're essentially saying is that you are a better talent scout than every other talent scout that is employed by an AFL club.

I don't disagree around the McEntee call, however they play totally different positions, so it's kind of irrelevant.

Garner played in the Richmond VFL side, where he would have had all the scouts watching regularly - and apparently not one club deemed him good enough to even have a chance in another AFL side. You're right, it's not 100% accurate (nothing ever is) - but on the balance of probabilities, he was not good enough.

Your Houston comparison is a great one - you didn't deem Houston worthy of a game over Garner, yet Ken and co did. Houston is now a dual AA player and one of the best in his position in the league, where is Garner? Blame Ken if you want, but apparently 19 other teams weren't interested in him either.

Perhaps, it can never be proven. In modern times, with the mid season draft, the 'second chance' brigade is far more likely to get another opportunity if they're deemed worthy.

Every club gifts players 40-60 games in the hope that they break out, it's not just Ken or Port. They typically have some redeeming quality that the club is looking to develop. Alternatively, and likely the case with Garner, we had an abundance of players in his position and he was deemed one of the ones to get rid of. Could he have gone on to play 50 odd games somewhere else? Yeah probably, but it's unlikely he was going to be much more than a fringe player at best.

Yeah there was never any certainty of him being a star, we all have players we like the look of and want to see be given a run. He seemed to me to have a nice leg, good mark, and toughness, would've been good to see him with a bit of an extended run, not to the extent but even half of what Sutcliffe/McEntee were and are being afforded, even Lachie Jones to an extent, plenty of others too.

Back to Lorenz, I hope we get to see him given a decent run as he's done some nice things at AFL level, and has consistently put up good numbers in a shit SANFL side since he's debuted.

I agree, he looked to be decent from what I saw, but we had an abundance of players in his position and he was probably bottom of that pile. It's important to remember though that they see him in training, have access to far more metrics than we do, know what instructions he was given etc etc.

As I said, Ken may be poor at some aspects of coaching, but that doesn't mean he's horrible at all aspects of it. I still think we've been very good judges of when to delist a player, and it's never come back to bite us.

Back to Lorenz, Ken mentioned him in his presser unprovoked, so I imagine he may get a go.

Just doesn't have a defence/pressure part of his game for me. I think that might be holding him back. Happy to get handed an easy ball.

Lorenz with a game high 29 disposals vs Westies this week.

Lovely kicking action, well balanced with the dominant hand guiding the ball onto the boot and the eyes remaining lowered until contact is made.

The Power have numerous players getting games every week who could only dream of having a technique as good as that!

This bloke must have crashed into Kenny’s campervan in the carpark and wrote it off- only explanation for his continual lack of first team footy.
Thought he was in our best 10 players in the one full game he played this year and is smashing it at SANFL level and can’t even get an emergency spot?!

Defensive efforts are lacking apparently.
