North Melbourne
This just posted on the North board. Thought y'all might be interested:

Did anyone else here listen to Michael Turner being interviewed on SEN this morning?

It was obviously in relation to G Ablett. He recalled how lucky he was to coach a Geelong Falcons team which that year had Ablett, Hodge and Bartel in the midfield. They didn't win the flag that year, falling in the prelim.

He was then asked by Dr Turf for his thoughts on Tom Scully, with Dr Turf being a Melbourne supporter. Turner said "He's an excellent player. Unfortunately for his side he was injured on the weekend but they still beat us. He's exceptional".

Then without prompting he went on......"But I can tell you Turfy that your club have spoken to me about two of our boys (at Geelong Falcons) so I wouldn't say that Scully's a definite for you. I tole them that I have as good a midfield this year as we had with Ablett, Bartel and Hodge back in their day. Similarly, this team lost in the prelim final.

Two of my midfielders are going to be superstars, in Cunnington and Rohan. They're different types of midfielders but the attraction to Melbourne is that they're from the same local arrea and have an uncanny understanding between each other. They also look after each other.

Besides that, and taking into account the current AFL stars I mentioned, the two current boys (Cunnington and Rohan) are the toughest I've ever had in Cunnington, and the most exciting in Rohan. They're destined to be AFL superstars and if they can get to the same club I'd be elated!"

didn't hear that but thanks for the insight. still say that we'd take scully number one but maybe the club is thinking bout taking one of those two at pick two.

Scully has already been told that he's a MFC player next year.

Pick#2 is still up in the air at the moment

Scully is surely a lock, we've all but said so. I can't see us missing out on him just to take two guys from the same area. I just don't think Cunnington has the skills of Trengove, and whilst Rohan could be anything I can't see him being worth the gamble. I'd rather take Trengove woh is the safe option and still could turn into a Joel Selwood than the excitement machine who could be like Stevie J but could also be like Dale Thomas.

Rohan looks awesome, damn he is quick and has some height too.

I would be stoked if we took him at pick 2, would be rapped with Trengove also.

Rohan has red hair so he fits the MFC mould.

IMO though if the club was to take a "risk", it will be with pick 2 only, not both and it will be to punt on a KPP like a Talia or Butcher.

Scully & Trengove are +100 game players no doubt, but I think we might be in for a suprise on draft day.

Heard the interview. I'm pretty sure MT has been pumping up those two boys for a long time.

I'm pretty sure MFC are just covering all bases and getting as much information on all the kids. I would be disappointed if they didn't know everything about the top 20 players. Actually top 50.

I think this is a good point raised. Michael Turner is one of the best judges of young talent in the country and rarely get its wrong. For him to say that are as good if not better than Ablett, Hodge and Bartel is as good a wrap any junior could recieve.

I hope we take one of the two (Rohan or Cunnington), i think ROhan wold be ala collingwood taking Dale Thomas, could be a mistake given the outside playing styles, but could come of and he cold become a cult hero in the red and blue.

I think although Trengrove maybe a better player than either of them there is the 'go home' factor. Look at what Scot Thompson did to us, and what all the WCE boys are doing. We dont want a player for 3-4 years while they find their feet, we want a career player who will be passionate about the club.

I would prefer a Victorian, i have question marks over the dees taking Butcher as he cant kick, i want to be able to trust our players kicking for goal, and i remember an interview with him earlier in the season, not sure where it was, but he was saying he would not want to go to a club that had intentionally lost games to secure his services, at this time he was clearly refferering to us. This just turned me off him, he should be thankfull at any chances he gets at AFL! So i think one of Cunnington, or Rohan would be good at pick 2.

I think we can't afford to take any risks. We have to go for the best two players in the draft with picks 1 and 2. I've seen a bit of both Scully and Trengove and both are very good smart midfield players which is exactly what we need. If a decent KPP is available still at pick 18, then we will pick them up for sure. Watts will continue to develop and the emegence of Jurrah has meant we can afford to grab the two best midfielfers in this draft! Clearly we won't be climbing the ladder too far next season, so we should be definitely targeting a tall forward in the 2010 draft with an other top ten pick.

obviously you are expecting us to have another very poor year next year as with all the priorities to the gold coast not many other top 10 picks exist... as well as this, the draft will be shallowed significantly as the GC have already taken 12 from next years draft who they rate as the best players at this stage...

I think we should take the best player at 2, and at the moment Trengove is it. We can't be afraid of the go home factor, it's just as likely as a Vic player wanting to go and play with Collingwood or Essendon for more money.

What we need to do is build a solid culture at the club, that will be the key to keeping all valuable players. Trengove & Scully are our men for 2010.

How can you say that? that's the most stupid thing iv'e heard on big footy for a long time... If a player wants to go home to another state to be with there family there is no stopping them, If a player wants to go to another Victorian club for more money you can at least try match it... how can you match wanting to go home and be with your family? To say there is just as much chance is ridiculous.. history tells the tale.. Farmer, Thompson and Judd.. and thats just off the top of my head.

You may find my comment stupid but at least i am not stupid enought to paint every player with the same brush.

If a player wants to leave a club they will, no matter if they are Victorian, South Australian or Irish. If the culture at the club isn't right, and the club is struggling players will leave no matter where they're from, like you pointed out with Thompson and Farmer.

I think you'll need to look further in to the real reason's (which wouldn't have been published) why the players you mentioned wanted to move. And at least Judd stuck around until he had won a Premiership with WC same as Kennelly etc, players don't always pack up and leave. I'd be happy if Trengove brought us a Preimership and left after that.

I'll ask you - What victorian players have the MFC attracted? The MFC needs to build a culture ala Hawthorn, Geelong, Brisbane who keep the Browns, Black, Powers, Franklins, Corey & Enrights.

I think it's stupid to be afraid of drafting the best players because they're from interstate, and the MFC would be stupid if we didn't take the best at 2, otherwise we should just give the pick to North for Gibson, he's a victorian after all :p.

I agree he needs to come in to bat for his boys, no disrespect to them but he has his own & their interest at the fore.

Sorry to intrude but I cannot see how you guys would possibly select Gary Rohan with pick two. I saw his game against Dandenong on the weekend and in my opinion he was terrible. He only had a handfull of disposals (10 IIRC) and it's not like he was super damaging with the limited ball that he had. To make it even worse he got caught holding the ball three times. Butcher, Trengove or even Martin look better prospects.

Other than Scott Thompson the last good South Australian I remember playing for Melbourne was Todd Viney. Probably a few other solid types but he's first that springs to mind. Obviously no trouble keeping him.

Thompson seemed had other reasons for leaving which people on here have alluded too- not purely wanting to go home.

I don't think we should worry about it too much. Trengrove appears to be a model professional, and would relish playing in the heartland of the AFL.

Yea spot on, there is no way we want take scully at No. 1 and most likely trengrove. You ask any neutral observer who has watched the under 18's this year and they will tell you the two best performed playrs are scully and trengrove.

Jason MaCartney who was one of the under AA selectors, said scully played as tho he had dropped from AFL level to under 18 level whilst trengrove was the best performed player in under 18 championships.

As for not taking trengrove becuase of Scott Thompson don't be rediculous, why be once bitten twice shy. We have plenty of non victorian players who play for us and havent decided to leave. Just becuase trengrove is a midfielder from SA likewise with thompson the similarities end their. Even if he decides to leave after 4-5 years we should get some good value at trade week for him. You don't think the Eagles if they had their time again wud not take chris judd?

Taking only victorian players i don;t want to turn into Fremantle!

Agree. People seem to forget that recruiting is about summing up whether one player will be a better AFL player than another.

How often has Turner seen Trengove play?
