Curious to know peoples thoughts now that there is legitimate concern on coffield playing round 1.

Which of these combinations would you go?

A.Pearce/Coniglio
Naughton/redden
A.pearce/redden & 80k

I would keep Pearce on the bench and swap with Doedee.

Looks pretty damn solid, some similarities to mine as well.

Cheers mate, seems to be that teams are all getting a lot closer to each other as it gets closer to lineups being revealed

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-03-21/saints-to-unleash-top10-pick-hunter-against-lions

PRIZED St Kilda draftee Hunter Clark will make his debut against Brisbane on Saturday at Etihad Stadium

The Saints have not announced if pick No.8 Nicholas Coffield, who has also impressed this pre-season and played both JLT games, will be selected.

A potential spanner in the works right there...

Half the fantasy nation is probably sh**ting bricks right now.

That would be a spanner , another version coming up now where he isnt in the lineup. actually i might have one somewhere.

i GUESS Naughton is the obvious replacement.

For me I'm going straight down to Doedee on field and putting Pearce on my bench and netting that extra 60K. I hope Coffield plays, but if he doesn't, I'm not going with Naughton. Especially when he'll only make 5-10PPG better than Pearce at best anyway.

Another option could be to use Rayner, Stephenson or Fogarty up forward and then put in an extra defender up back, but I'm not comfortable with that at all.

If Coffield isn't named it's going to create some really headaches for many coaches, myself included. I'm really thinking he may not play because why would they only announce Clarke if both were going to debut this week?

O'Shea won't be playing either so that rules out sliding Coffield into O'Shea if he doesn't play.

Richo is really playing with our emotions here!!! Pick Coffield ffs!!!

Just for everyone that's currently standing at the edge of a cliff RE. Coffield, one possible option to jump to could be Z. Guthrie. I'm not entirely sure he'll be named, but of the remaining candidates, he looks best suited. He's been training strongly and has put on 4kgs this summer, so he's definitely progressing. I think Thurlow might be named ahead of him, but there is a possibility that he could make the bench depending on how we want to structure up. Will keep you guys updated

what about O'Connor?

what about O'Connor?
Not as likely. Definitely a possibility, but more someone we could be looking at bringing in, in matches that we can ease him in. A first off hit out against Melbourne, a top 8 contender, is probably not the time to put him in the deep end. Guthrie already has finals experience and actually has a lot of composure for his age and size. He also has the handy addition of his brother down back helping them jell, which is only strengthening his case for Round 1. AFL.com.au has Zach in their best 22 as well, so only positive signs. If he's named, he's 100% who I'm going with

AFL.COM.AU Geelong Best 22

HF: Nakia Cockatoo, Wylie Buzza, Sam Menegola
F: Daniel Menzel, Tom Hawkins, Brandan Parfitt
R: Zac Smith, Gary Ablett, Mitch Duncan
I: Zach Guthrie, Mark Blicavs, James Parsons, Lachlan Fogarty

E: Cory Gregson, George Horlin-Smith, Mark O'Connor, Esava Ratugolea

Could someone please knock some sense into me......
Why would I not pick Mark Hutchings?
Played forward last year and averaged 52. He's got forward dpp, averaged between 68-91 in all years before last, did well in JLT, two midfielders retired last year, he's had a good pre season apparently and all the new guys at West Coast are forwards.
Surely he plays midfield and averaged 75+...???
Would particularly like an Eagles fan's thoughts.

the issue is whether or not he gets the tagging role.

The absolute no. 1 reason why you don't pick him, is because he's their go to tagger. That's why I've avoided him after considering it. Guys like him and Jacobs aren't ball winners/tacklers in the same vein as Scooter Selwood or Sam Gibson. If he does get a 75 one week, you can guarantee he'll back it up with a 40 the next.

he won't cost much if he stinks it up and the upside is quite good.

He should make you cash, but it is a burn of a trade at some stage. He’s cheap, cheap for a reason. I’d be more comfortable with Bundy...look for more cash and check out Taranto, no talk of him at all, been in and out of my team.

Yeah if he is rubbish I can downgrade him early to a Ryan, Rioli or Rayner etc. but I think the chances of it coming off are reasonably high.
I think at West Coast he’d be behind Redden, Sheed, Shuey and maybe Gaff for inside midfield time, but he should get enough minutes in there to average something decent.

No talk of Cory Gregson either, at 283K. Should return for Round 1 and has been earmarked for a high half forward / wing role due to his pace and endurance. One to keep an eye on. I've flirted with the idea of Taranto, but he's a 'wait and see' for me with that stacked midfield.

Hmmm you say that, but I think the most alarming trend is that his numbers have gone down every single year since he started in the system. That's a big flashing warning light for me:

https://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/pr-west-coast-eagles--mark-hutchings

Year Games Average

2013 9 91.3
2014 16 79.2
2015 10 71.8
2016 17 68.5
2017 17 52.6

I think that reflects the role he’s played in the team. I think West Coast had him playing forward last year and that affected his scoring. With a bunch of rookies coming into the forward line and two guns going out of the midfield, I’m backing him to play midfield. Had a strong JLT playing there too.

Interesting....With Coffield in doubt, this reshuffling is always a chance. God I'm even considering Hutchings now after all this debate lol. Himmelberg up back and then Hutchings up forward. I just hope they name Coffield and we can all go and have a good night's sleep
