2nds Port Adelaide vs Centrals - Round 7 @ Alberton

18 Jimmy Toumpas
Very good defensive game. Reliable go-to man in the back half for teammates under pressure. One flubbed kickout from the defensive goal-square which saw the ball come back over his head, but that was the only black mark on his game for me.

If we're thinking of the same play, that was Houston, not Toumpas.

My take on today. FWIW it's worth noting a whole lot of players who eventually did well struggled in the first half.

Disposals: Summerton 30, Hewett 25, Drew 23, Toumpas 21.
Goals: Eddy 4, Monfries 3, Ladhams, Marshall, Johnson 2, White, Lienert, Bonner, Atley, Lobbe.

1 Steven Summerton (c)
Superb all game but was just putting out fires in the first half. VERY damaging in the second half as a reliable back-up to players under pressure and then following up as an efficient distributor. No goals himself but a fair few due to his work.

3 Jake Neade
Worked hard and was kept up forward most of the game. But was kept goalless so working hard is unlikely to impress the Power selection panel.

6 Angus Monfries
Was OK in general and dangerous when he got his chance. I think the 3 goals might make his game look better than it was but I guess it's illustrative to compare him to Neade. He can hurt the opposition with less obvious effort, he must be a chance this week if his cards aren't marked to just see out his contract in the Maggies.

7 Louis Sharrad
I can't recall seeing him.

13 Todd Marshall
Forgettable 1st half, stellar 3rd quarter. Not a big kid, not especially tall either. But very skilful once he switched on.

14 Billy Frampton
Ineffective as a ruckman but in the second half he used his size and tendency to be aggressive well. Really has to stop giving away silly frees.

18 Jimmy Toumpas
Very good defensive game. Reliable go-to man in the back half for teammates under pressure. One flubbed kickout from the defensive goal-square which saw the ball come back over his head, but that was the only black mark on his game for me.

19 Matthew White
Saw him once, late in the game. A brief run along the wing like he did for the Power in 2014 to deliver a long, curling point.
Edit. The club named him fourth best for us

23 Matthew Lobbe
He was fine IMO. Useful around the ground, tapped well when used in ruck. Didn't burn me with his shot on goal this week.

25 Logan Austin
Nothing special, not demanding a call-up that I can see.

26 Riley Bonner
Played well in patches but gave away a silly undisciplined free pulling down a Centrals' player who'd been awarded a mark

27 Brett Eddy
Imposing, whether scoring himself or aiding his colleagues. My pick for the Power this week. Probably should have played last Thursday.

28 Willem Drew
Nothing special early IMO, adequate in the second half but then everyone was.
Edit. The club named him second best for us

30 Joe Atley
Very good game. Deserves senior selection soon.

31 Aidyn Johnson
As with Drew
Edit - except for the being named second best part.

32 Dougal Howard
As with Drew
Edit - except for the being named second best part.

37 Jesse Palmer
I was disappointed. Did I miss something? A few have suggested he was destined for big things. Not that you'd have thought that from today.

38 Peter Ladhams
A decent rookie game.

40 Jarrod Lienert
Good game. Stronger than a few of the kids who've been on the main list for a few years now

43 Dan Houston
Undoubted talent but IMO was one of a few who didn't switch on until the game had already swung our way.

44 Cameron Hewett
A really good game. Imposed himself on contest after contest. Seemed 6" taller than I remembered.

45 Emmanuel Irra
Nothing super-special but he certainly got involved and was a useful player.

50 Robbie Young
I can't recall seeing him, and I was watching out for him. I may have confused him with Neade though

Can Frampton make it as an AFL player? Doesn't appear to be a dominant ruckman at SANFL level neither does he appear to be an imposing key forward?

Haha go stand next to him (Marshall) and you will get an idea how tall he is. He is 198cm.
Well yeah, but you look at him v the various defenders he plays on and it's a different thing. If I rate our players v me in skills, strength or size we have a list of unstoppable monsters.

Hey just wondering what jumper the Maggies wore today did they wear an indigenous pb jumper or the same one the boys wore on Thursday?
Just a standard Maggies' jumper unless it was a super subtle variation. I don't think the SANFL does specialised rounds.

But you werent talking about his skills or even weight size, you were talking about his height. Most tall defenders in the SANFL are the 190-195cm so he will be taller than nearly all of them and most tall defenders in the AFL are 192-197cm with some guys like Jonas and Gibson at 189cms.

My bold.
Yeah saw it n thought sheesh...our rucks are sharking. Wanna see a lot more of it from us, front n back.
Pre Game Indigneous Ceremony very good. Crowd take on it was, silent respect, so well done all.
From the ground in front of the Williams, Todd turned it on with aplomb with some 3rd 1/4 theatrics that beggard belief.
Lets forgive him our fears. He's different and quick in mind n body. Gee the Toump was good today...leather poisoning.
Atley a standout for mine and Ladhams in dispatches. I could go on but a lotta players played well. Doogs n Eddy were
better than good. Butch in the 1st qtr potting 'em off the lampshades (old snooker term..on song..couldn't miss),
warmly received too :) with a few sly gibes thrown in.
Chad coached hands on (he's a Cornes after all) with calculated passion and it showed in the 2nd 1/2,
that and our fitness.
Club busy, always good.

Ps
Turns out a regular footy friend is the mother of one of our BF doyens.

Also might be an optical illusion because Marshall has a bloody long torso and relatively short legs. That lower centre of gravity is probably why he is so good when the ball is on the ground for a 198cm player.

Sharrad and Young did NOT play league today. White was better and did a few good things. Atley had a better second half after struggling to get enough of the ball in the first half and is probably needing to do better to get selected if there are no injuries. Marshall is pretty tall forward.

That was "HOLLER FOR A MARSHALL". Just one of the catchprases and songs being used like "SHOW ME THE WAY" and "WE'VE GOT THE BEST EDDY IN THE STATE" to the tune of "He's got the whole world in his hands."
Now that's an oldie! Must have been the early 60's when I first heard it.

He (Frampton) gets hand on ball in ruck about half as often as Lobbe but still directs it to one of ours twice as often
I guess that's why we need stats, my perception was Lobbe was far more in control. However time in ruck was clearly weighted to Marshall, my impression being it was for development reasons.

Sharrad and Young did NOT play league today ....
Phew! Always embarrassing to report on a player who did not play. I included them in my list because they were announced as selected. I've just realised that was 23 names so one had to go. But I still must have missed someone, or we played with 21.

The signs are definitely not good for Billy's chances of making the grade in the AFL as a ruckman, he is being beaten too easily at the centre bounce downs by some very average sanfl blokes.

He could be a chance as a chf though, the athleticism is definitely there, emphasised by him running at least 20 metres to grab a loose ball and deliver a perfectly weighted kick that he put in front of Eddy, who he didn't have to break stride as he ran from outside the 50 to less than 10 metres from the goal square to collect the ball.

Only 21 in the sanfl. Are you OK? It seems odd that you're this much off the mark.

Ta. Who came in for him that I missed? And did Sharrad play? Like I say i couldn't remember seeing him either.

I left my budget in the car, but I think there were 23 players named, including Young and Sharrad, who both played in the early game, which left 21 players, the starting 18 plus the 3 on the interchange.
