I wouldn't write Richmond off it's round 2 ffs I think Collingwood just match up well on them but there's improvement in the Tigers don't kid yourselves.
I don’t think the new rules suit them. Especially the kick-out rule, which allows the defending team to clear their lines more easily and makes it much harder for the attacking team to apply sustained forward pressure and lock the ball in their forward line.
That’s a huge part of their game plan.
And it may be too early to tell, but at least at this stage it looks like the balance might have been tilted away from contested ball teams and towards teams that run & spread well. Mmm

Jack Riewoldt out for two months with a scaphoid injury. Disastrous start to the season for Richmond. And gives us a real chance in Round 4.[/QUOTE
Then again it might work out ok for them as playing he and Lynch in tandem didn’t seem to be working that well for them. At least they have a replacement in Lynch.

I think you need to be able to do both.

Richmond is cooked because most of their pressure was a result of winning territory with an overloaded midfield and then locking the ball in.

They played 4 forwards, 7 defenders and 7 mids at centre bounce and what would happen is the 7th defender would run into the midfield as soon as they had won the ball to create a +2. That’s why they looked so dominant - 8 mids to 6 in the centre of the ground.

They figured that once they got an inside 50 (they didn’t care how they got it in) they would be able to use their pressure to lock the ball in. This is why I hated the stupid adjustment Final Siren made to the Squiggle regarding scoring shots without taking into account inside 50s - it made Richmond seem better than they actually were. The kick ins make it easier to bypass any forward press (as long as you’re methodical and have players who can execute regulation kicks).

Their fans are asking why Martin looks disinterested. It’s because he knows they don’t have a hope of doing anything against the stronger midfields because his dominance was based around the pressure the extra mids brought to the table.

I wasn’t joking when I said that this Richmond side would never make it to the GF again...I’m just glad they did make it count.

Tips for tonight?

Buddy to kick 4 in the last quarter to sneak Sydney home IMO.

I think Adelaide are in trouble this year without Dodee and with such a slow midfield and forward line (and rumored conflicts in the box) but I don't rate Sydney that highly either.

The Swans will get it done though in typical swans fashion.

Can anyone tell me how Brandon Ellis has managed not just to stay on a list, but in a first 22 for the best part of a 8 years ?

Very fit, penetrating accurate kick. I'd sniff around him as a RFA (note the R - he is in the highest 25% paid at Richmond)

Collingwood look alright. Having probably the best midfield in the business under the new rules helps that. The way they dismantled Richmond was excellent I thought. As I said during the match, the way they were quickly switching play and maintaining possession until an opening is how I imagine we were supposed to play last year but we held it up too long in doing so.

Richmond are going to be in strife with no Rance, no Riewoldt and a clearly underdone Dusty

We all want the Crows to be shit, but I still feel they're a lot better than we give them credit for over here and I expect them to bounce back tonight. Im tipping the Crows, but hoping for a Sydney win. Definitely not writing the Crows off after 1 bad week.

The AFL now own Docklands but they will never have the guts to fix it up properly because it means spending some $$$ and admitting the have been wrong for 2 decades. They have to get rid of the car park and fill it in with dirt. 200 millimitres of sand soil and grass on a cement base will never produce a good to excellent playing surface. It will always be poor.

I went on it last year after the Essendon game.
It was worse than most amateur pitches.

Yeah I though last night’s game was an excellent example of execution of a plan. Richmond want to intercept and to tackle. They can’t do either if you are prepared to maintain possession and your short kicking game is excellent.

Richmond definitely got screwed. A fair few key and obvious decisions were ignored for them but paid the other way.
There was plenty of bad decisions against Collingwood as well. The most hilarious being Scott Pendlebury being slung without the ball, 30m out right in front. Especially when a couple of minutes later, the same umpire at the other end, paid a free against Pendlebury for the exact same thing. Led to Lynch's "unpaid mark" off Nankervis's hands. Sidebottom being paid out on the full for a ball that came off his thigh...

Richmond hardly got any free kicks, because Collingwood had the ball all night and were racking up uncontested marks.

IMO the AFL need to seriously consider looking at the latest technology in artificial turf.

As much as it sucked, 2018 will hold us in good stead this year, because there will be times when we need to play a possession based style against teams that think the way to beat us is by matching pressure.

Or even look at tearing the joint down, sell the land (would be worth a mint for developers). And use that money to build a mini mcg for about 50k seats.
