I missing being told about all those learning experiences. Sit I have mouthed that phrase a couple of times late in the footy season this year.

The Geelong team he had taken over had just been blown out by 80 points in a GF against a West Coast side that looked like an all-conquering dynasty.

Maybe he felt he was freshening up the side by rooting out elements that were contributing to such high profile failures (their third in six seasons). Ironically he obviously took them just as far the very next season before falling to the all-conquering Carlton team of '95.

I often wonder whether we'd have gone a ways to avoiding the shitstorm that was 05-12 if Williams had cleared the decks and not kept topping up with chaff.

lost All Oz CHF Barry Stoneham in Rd 22 with a broken leg
Week 1 of the finals won after the siren against Bulldogs in the 4 v 5 clash with Brownless kicking a long goal after he took a mark just before the siren.
Week 2 played Carlton who finished 2nd who lost to Melbourne 7th in first week of finals. All Oz Mansfield was ruled out Thursday night and the morning of the game 3 All Oz players and the engine room in Bairstow, Couch and Hocking all pull out with injuries. So Geelong have 5 All Oz players missing but whip Carlton by 5 goal. An amazing effort.
Week 3 beat North after the siren with goal to Ablett from just outside the goal square after mark seconds before the siren. Still IMHO one of the greatest games of all time I have seen

GF - nothing, nada, zilch left in the petrol tank. That's why they got smashed, not the side was coming to the end of its glory days. West Coast only just beat Collingwood at Subi in week 1, get a week off and then smash Melbourne in the PF at Subi.

They made the GF next year because they still had a star studded side. But in 1995 they came up against a Carlton who were hell bent on wanting to avenge a 1993 GF loss when they were favourites and going out in straight sets in 1994. Carlton were the first team to have a 20-2 season.

The main problem with Cwaigy and all of those "learning experiences" was that the players failed to learn anything useful from them.

Voodoo journalism. Minimal change in their first round pick gets them 2 known players and a significant improvement of their second round pick. I'd be happy with that.

Voodoo journalism. Minimal change in their first round pick gets them 2 known players and a significant improvement of their second round pick. I'd be happy with that.

I'm pretty sure the swap of draft picks with Geelong was seperate to the Hawthorn trade. I'm not really sure how "significant" moving from 47 to 35 is either.

It will be interesting to see who they pick up.

I was lucky enough to be at this game. A few thing stood out....
Wayne Carey was unbelievable, easily BOG, kicked 6 I think.

Gary Ablett was very well held by Mick Martyn. I think he kicked 3 but that last goal, that was fairy tale stuff, could only be better to do it in a GF.

Andrew Wills telling Ablett what to do after his mark was comical. I reckon Gaz had a fair idea of what needed to be done.

The other thing that stands out was the atmosphere that day, 94k crowd going berserk. SANFL/crows crowds had nothing on this back then. Nothing to me has come close until our home games this year (excluding 04 PF and GF)

Yup, Martyn was lauded for his game up until that last play. Needless to say Mick was shattered.

Absolute cracker of a game.

Geelong and North of the 90s, played some of the best football ever. Helps when each side had possibly the best 2 players to ever play the game

Charlie Cameron was handed the #23, poor lad may be doomed to suffer the same overhyped fate of Petrenko now.

When are we going to announce number changes? Would like to see Ryder in #4.

It was a cracker. I remember exactly where I was when watching that game so it certainly made an impression. Ablett's goal was Geelong's only one in the last quarter. Tudor (who managed to get the ball to Ablett) was an ex-North player to rub salt into the wound.

Only 2 sets of double-figure odds to make the 8, Melbourne 11.00 and St. Kilda 13.00. But the 8 looks like it won't change all that much from last year. The longest odds I'd give a chance to are Brisbane at 3.75.

I read the article on their website and it had a photo of the number 23 locker. I was surprised to see that they've actually had five A L McLeod's represent them: one was a three time club champion, two played in premierships (but in different years), one played 340 games and one is an AFL life member. Wow - such proud historiness

Yeah I had that picture of the locker embedded in my op but for some reason it wasn't showing so I deleted it, think there might be an issue with big footy.

I'm gonna make a serious thread on the main board about a largely innocuous, yet still negative experience on game day and blame it entirely on the AFL despite the AFL having no say in it. Such as lack of armrests in economy/regular member seating at AO, the corporate boxes being too shiny and creating too much glare in certain spots in the stadium making it hard to follow the action, or the AO staff being unfriendly and unwilling to converse in idle conversation.

But I'm not sure what to pick.

I've been trying to see in previous drafts whether there is any advantage or disadvantage in this. Any drafts from 2010 on were compromised drafts so I couldn't regard those. In drafts before 2010 there were not too many occasions where I could see that having 10 was an advantage over 14. However having pick 35 over 47 was a large advantage and in the range 35-46 there would be 4-5 players who have been first team. They still have to be correctly picked but the later round 1 coupled with a round 2 pick could be a winner.

Armrests? Why not ask for the complete air travel experience and go for reclining chairs designed to shit off the person behind you?

Down the ladder you can overpower teams with a good midfield even if you don't have the bookends.

You should be able to absolutely flog the lower teams at the stoppages, it's only top teams who will be able to really exploit your lack of tall forwards, assuming your midfield fires.

You'll be around the mark.
