Well said Papa G, especially the bit Forzaport quoted. :thumbsu:

And Forzaport, great avatar. One of my all time favourite shows. Wonder if Josh will straighten things at the club like Mr Kotter did when he went back.

Amen!

All this nonsense about port's history turning away people is just propoganda perpetuated by those who want to hide the one thing that sets us apart from the fruit tingles in an effort to make us "crows lite"

Agreed ... I was being told on another forum by a former Port Adelaide supporter who became a Crow in 1990 and didn't change back in 1997 'coz we weren't the same Port Adelaide as he followed in the 1980s (mainly due to the point we weren't black and white or magpoies) that this kind of marketing was turning people away and we should become another 'team for all South Australians' ... 'crows lite' is a great explanation!

... another imbecile? yes!

What the?!? So he didn't turn back, because we weren't Port enough, so becoming more Port offends him?!

It's great to see us finally marketing to our strengths - and the vitriol from those who would never support Port, even if we called ourselves the Alberton Ravens and dropped all black and white from our guernseys only supports this.

We can blame the marketing guys (and I do), but not only was it poor marketing it's poor bloody logic. Product differentiation, attacking your competitor(s), promoting your good points. We've done none of these. Crows-lite indeed. Still I'll know we've really got a clue when we have adverts attacking crows supporters for being theatre going grannies :D

This idea that people will be turned off by the old magpies references bemuses me. If you decide to barrack for Port Adelaide in the AFL, you know exactly where the club has come from. You have made a concious decision to follow Port Adelaide, the same club that has been around forever and all the baggage that comes with it. If you're too young to remember before Port only existed in the AFL, then who gives a toss - all your getting is a bit of a history lesson which I doubt is going to turn you off. Idiots like KG, Cornsey and other Clown supporters saying that bringing up our own clubs history will turn people off is just moronic. If you have a lifelong history of hating the Magpies, you simply are not going to follow Port FULL STOP. There aren't too many 40 year old football followers out there who haven't decided on which team they are going to support. It's a ******ed arguement peddled by imbeciles.

I disagree. There are a lot of new, young Port supporters that go for Port because they see the Crows are boring, or think it's cooler to go for the less popular team.

A lot of kids today don't have same allegiances as many on this board have, and choose to support clubs for quite odd reasons.

Of course, I agree that history generally isn't a turn off. But I do believe it can be to some, in fact I know it can be.

...
Absolutely. Lots of kids go for "The Power" without knowing or caring about our history. Now is more important than then to the very young.

History is good, as long as people do not feel that to support Port their parents had to have done the same.
That could alienate new supporters as much as trying to ignore our history did to some of our existing supporters.

Indeed. We started with 37,000 members and an average of 33,000 people to each game..... with one would guess 100% Old-time Port Supporters. Since distancing ourselves from our history, or membership and crowds have done what exactly ?

For every one ex South supporting kid we managed to get we pushed away 2 old timers.

And more than likely the rest of the family as well....

Like the new banner. :thumbsu:

As others have already said, including the images of PAFC players from our SANFL days in the background is a winner.

I fixed it.

Edit:- I've emailed the club congratulating them on the new banner and with this suggested improvement. Here's a link to where it's hosted on Imageshack if you want to see it in a decent size

IMHO adding "THE PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB" to the banner in that way makes it too busy and detracts from the effectiveness of the new banner. If you open a page with the URL portadelaidefc.com.au, the window title says "Port Adelaide - Official website of the Port Adelaide football club" and immediately below the centre of the banner is the text "Today on Port Adelaide FC" yet you still need something in the banner to indicate that you are in fact viewing the website of the Port Adelaide Football Club then maybe someone sitting behind you with a sledge hammer would be more appropriate ;)

How many other AFL clubs have the full club name prominent in their website banner let alone on the banner at all?

Good point Wharfie - how many non-PAFCians are we going to get to search our web site and not realise where they are?

most do - some by 'default' because their logo includes the club name:-

such as Brisbane; Fremantle; Melbourne etc

others are very prominent - such as Carlton; Geelong

Actually it is the opposite. I agree some do by default because of their logo which is why I said "prominent in their website banner".

The only reference to "Brisbane" is in the logo. Their URL is lions.com.au and they have "Lion news" and "Today on lions online". It is difficult to find a reference to the Brisbane Lions Football Club on their home page at all.

Both Melbourne and Freemantle make no reference to their nickname but have branded with their actual club name. I'd be happy for Port Adelaide to go the same way but not a hash of both which results in neither being clear.

You must have different browser settings to me because the Carlton banner does not mention the Carlton Football Club at all and in fact does not even contain the word "Carlton". :)

The Geelong site has the "Geelong Cats", which is also their URL, not the Geelong Football Club.

Brisbane is a different case. They have to pretend Fitzroy is still half their club so Lions is almost mandated to be used everywhere.

How could I have forgotten that the Brisbane Australian Football Club and the Fitzroy Football Club "merged". They are actually the "Brisbane Lions Australian Football Club", formerly the "Brisbane Bears - Fitzroy Football Club", but you don't see that (the current name) anywhere on their banner.

But it is really no different to the "Geelong Cats".

Roylion explained their situation to me in this thread. They are two clubs mergered into one, but legally still use the same structure of the old Brisbane Bears.

We are one club split into two, but the "new" club uses the old legal structure.

180 degrees different on so many issues which the AFL stuff around both clubs with.
