Prediction - Gold Coast Suns will fold by end of 2022 season.

The junior participation in QLD has made it a more than worthwhile experiment and the Suns aren’t going anywhere. Of course it will take time for the club to get more fans as QLD sports supporters in general are the flakiest front runners in Australia. They will only attend when their team is winning and love jumping on a bandwagon. Suns start winning some games and the fans will flock to them

Not sure whether to like this post or dislike it. The first part is good. The part about Queensland sports fans is bullshit.

No it’s not.
Have a look at the crowds for the Broncos, Roar, Reds, Lions etc and it clear to see when they are having a winning season. The QLD fans love a winner and desert their teams when things aren’t going well
Most fickle in the land

There's some truth to it, but only in sports other than rugby league. The Broncos have had a pretty consistent home average attendance ever since moving back to Lang Park. The Lions do a lot better in attendances when they're doing well on the field compared to when they're doing poorly. The Gabba was packed out every game during the threepeat years, but only half full from 2015 - 2018.

But this happens to other teams too when they're not consistently making finals. Carlton went from averaging 35k per game in the mid-2000s when they sucked to averaging 50k in 2010-11 when they were good. Richmond went from averaging 40k in 2010-11 when they sucked to averaging 60k after winning the 2017 flag. The difference is Queensland doesn't have as large a base of dedicated supporters as the heartland states do.

How do the attendances for clubs like North & Saints stack up?

There are other clubs who need to come under scrutiny long before the Suns. It took Freo 18 years to make a Grand Final, and that's a club based in a traditional AFL state. They have a good core of young players atm and provided they hold on to them should play finals in the next few years.

I'm surprised that people are using yesterday's game to have a go at them. To be in the game against Geelong in Geelong for as long as they were yesterday actually showed some promise I thought.
Freo played finals in year 9.

Suns in year 11 and not even close.

Freo just the one spoon in 26 seasons.

Suns 2 already.

The only thing keeping the sun's alive is the AFL egos don't want to lose face and admit they were wrong.

The Suns can do what they like. I CGAF.

However, the cheek of their President attacking Tasmania's bid for an AFL team.

He's probably worried the AFL will reduce their footy welfare cheques if we do get a team. ;)

Don’t know about folding but there is a real lack of engagement with the suns by the locals.

Im associated with football up here, lots of kids playing footy but no one really cares about the suns, no one seems to barrack for them.
It's because they have not been near it unfortunately. Truth is the average person will say to themselves "Why would I support x team over y team when y team is way better etc"

Same reason why more successful clubs have more fans obviously. The team thats winning at the time is the team they choose to barrack for. People that support the team that represents where they come from are not as prevalent.

If Suns were consistently in finals I think their membership would be relatively good.

It's the lack of accountability for me, when the Sun's lose no body gives a s**t, there's zero pressure on the players because there are no consequences for losing they just keep living it up, cashed up on the sunny coast.

Even when the media bring a little heat on them after a couple of weeks no body cares again because the expectations are that they'll lose most weeks

Players that want to play there, stay there, go there just want a paycheck and some bruise free footy. You go there fully knowing you are never going to be a good team, because most aren't the team player type.

Sorry, didn't see this at the time. It's a bit harder to estimate for those clubs since they've played home games in more than one city, and North haven't been truly awful in a while until recently.

St Kilda had a very rapid rise and fall in attendances in the 90s, from 19k in 1995 when they finished third-last, to 36k in 1998 just after making the grand final, to 24k in the 2000 wooden spoon year. Then had 38k home attendances in the mid to late 2000s. I'll ignore the 2014-2015 rebuild since they played some games in Wellington at the time. In 2018 their home attendances fell to 25k as they finished third-last.

Similarly, North had a rapid rise and fall and rise in the mid-2000s, averaging 30k in 2005 where they made finals, 23k in 2006 when they finished in the bottom 3, then back to 28k in 2007 when they made finals again. In the past decade they've averaged around 25-27k when doing well and about 21k when doing badly, though switching their opposition at Bellerive Oval from Richmond to GWS also played a part.

What’s the longest amount of time a team has taken to make finals for the first time since inception?
Adelaide - 3 seasons
Brisbane - 9 seasons
Carlton - 7 seasons
Collingwood - 1st season
Essendon - 1st season
Fitzroy - 2 seasons
Fremantle - 9 seasons
Geelong - 1st season
Gold Coast - 11 seasons*
GWS - 5 seasons
Hawthorn - 33 seasons
Melboune - 1st season
North Melbourne - 21 seasons
Port Adelaide - 3 seasons
Richmond - 8 seasons
St Kilda - 11 seasons
Sydney - 3 seasons
West Coast - 2 seasons
Western Bulldogs - 14 seasons

Will move past St Kilda, probably the Dogs, still plenty of time for the North and Hawks records.

To argue otherwise is reminiscent of the woodcutter's axe - the handle was replaced, and then the blade was replaced, but the woodcutter still says it's his original axe.

I missed this at the time. This final paragraph really isn't applicable as you are talking about perceptions being the truth.

These are both philosophical arguments, but they are different. The woodcutr axe deals with a constructed map vs material or objective reality. The axe is the same as before simply because the map of the axe isn't the physical components. Same thing as a ship. Or a football club. You would be a fool to argue that the Collingwood football club of 1970 is not the same entity as the Collingwood football club of 2020, even though it's components are all different (i.e, all the players, staff, their home ground, headquartered suburbs have all been switched). Because 'Collingwood' is a constructed map, and not simply the sum of its physical parts.

It's the same thing with Brisbane. Their colors and mascot changed after the takeover, but the map remains the same.

Now, talking about perceptions being truth is a much different philosophical argument. And while it's got a lot of practical validity, it's a lot shaker. If that was all there was to truth, then no one could be proven wrong about anything. Yes, people can perceive mapped constructs differently, and may have a map of the Lions that is different to the Bears; but discovery of external facts such as court cases and legal documentation plays a huge part on what is truth, regardless on what a popular view may be. People are wrong.

The AFL should just drop the Suns in the toilet now. There is only so much flogging a dead horse you can do before you realise it won't raise a gallop.
Tasmania is a true football state that has to have a team in the AUSTRALIAN football league.
If you're not prepared to allow a team from Tassie in it, DON'T call yourself the AUSTRALIAN football league
Flogs !
