There have been a few no doubt. Some worse than others.
The 1994 Navy Blues are one big one that springs to mind. They looked world beaters before losing their last 3 games. Lost top spot getting pipped by the Dons who didn't make the 8 in the final home and away game of the season. Bombers derailed their season again in some small shape of form. Those shock losses against the 7th placed Demons and an injury ravaged Geelong in the semis was unexplainable. Propelled them in 95 no question. So thankfully for them, that got put to rest real quick. Funny how they did a similar thing in 92 missing the 6, West Coast were the team that finished them off in the last home and away game of the season. Won the flag. Funny how history repeats and teams have a certain thing with one another. Just like Collingwood in the last home and away game vs Melbourne in 2017, which knocked Melbourne out of the 8. West Coast got there, and won the flag the next year beating Collingwood and Melbourne. Off topic a bit but love my footy history and '' Amazing coincidences in Football '' Couldn't help but throw that in there.
Port in 2001 and 2002. And again, this season. What the hell happened? The Pies got them this year at Port after they won 13 odd straight, and they never really fully recovered. The Pies did that to them in a 2002 qualifying final after the Power finished the home and away season on top and The Power was well and truly shut off by the Lions in the prelim. They did get their first finals win in between all of that against the Dons. But it was another failed finals campaign just as it was in 2001 when they bowed out in straight sets. In 2004 they certainly made up for all of that stinking it up by dispatching of the Lions who were gunning for four straight.
Geelong to a degree in 2008 but in all honesty the Hawks were a very good side that season. Still when you lose just once all year going into the big one, you are expected to get the job done. Poor kicking, and a good game plan by the Hawks ( fair play ) as well as some mesmerizing moments made it a Grand Final to remember. Rioli, Dew, Hodge, Franklin having some great moments. Like the Blues and Power of seasons gone by, all was erased the very next year.
The Eagles of 2016 looked like a side with serious momentum going in to September after derailing the Crows top 4 chances in Adelaide as well as getting the Hawks in a game in Perth. Pipped the Giants at the Post with NN's winner on the siren in Sydney. But that 2 week break hurt their momentum, and put a serious wind in the sails of the mighty Western Bulldogs. Almost no one foreseen that coming as they just swept aside all before them. The Eagles in Perth, the 3 time reigning Premiers Hawthorn, a roaring Giants outfit in one of the most Pulsating Prelims ever played and finally the ladder topping Swans. Unreal.
Lions of 2019, Dees and Swans of 2022, must be in the conversation.
