If the VAFA decide to shorten the season to say 13 rounds or thereabouts, is it fair to activate the relegation / promotion
system? A bit stiff if your team plays Skobs twice and my team plays, lets say OS twice (with due respect)
Sure to be a hot potato no matter which way it falls

No relegation for 2020 if the season plays ahead would be my guess

Good call. I am/was bullsih about my clubs chances of an immediate return to A grade but if the season is compromised then personally I have no issue with spending another year in B grade, even if we do finish 1 or 2. A flag is a flag so winners should celebrate accordingly but this season it should not come with promotion.

Surely someone in the VAFA community could work out a way to normalise the results to account for an uneven draw.

Failing that you could have a final 6 (unlikely a side capable of winning a premiership would finish below 6th in a 10 team comp) and then rank sides 7-10 based on the first nine rounds only.

Promotion/relegation is a VAFA fundamental and as long as the system is agreed and communicated prior to the season starting it should be fair to all teams.

VAFA will likely play a 9 round season starting in June, that's just my hunch on it all.

Take care all
The problem with that scenario, MO, is that the experts - infectious disease and epidemiologists - have indicated it's about that time the virus will be at its peak.

Hope I'm wide of the mark, but I don't think we'll see much VAFA footy this season.

You want a mathematics calculation to determine standings?

Season and promotion/relegation decided by the Duckworth-Lewis method.

One up one down.

From a club perspective: Do you realise that the VAFA is still to announce what staffing hit it intends to implement? Each week $15+k is walking out the door with the staff having 5% to do compared to normal. If no season who pays [clubs]? I realise that it is people we are dealing with but 2021 clubs need to be protected as well. Sorry

Totally agree this would represent a compromise and is not an ideal situation, though these aren’t ordinary times.

Provided we play a reasonable number of games, shouldn’t the grand final winners (below Premier A) be rewarded for their work and dedication with an opportunity to test themselves at the next level up?

Conversely, if a particular team has had a player exodus and is facing 15-20 goal losses every week, it may actually be unfair to them to put them through a second season where they might struggle to win a game.

There are realistically only two options if play occurs

1- A miracle occurs and we start on May 2nd, full season without byes.

2- They play a 9 round season starting June sometime

As for relegation and promotion, there has to be. It’s unfair on a premiership team to have to stay in the same division. It may be hard on the bottom team but you’ve gotta reward the successful teams. Whether that means 1 or 2 teams will be a tough call.

I’ve always liked the VAFAs 2 up/2 down but this will be an extraordinary season so sacrifices will have to be made

Who knows what might happen. I try and listen to the health experts but even they can’t seem to agree on the duration and impact. Heard one interviewed yesterday who said we (Australia) will be almost back to normal in 6-10 weeks. Shortly after another one was predicting Armageddon and we should put everything on hold for 6-12 months. Like any argument you can always find a set of facts to suit your particular point of view so I’ve stopped putting my faith in what I see or read and just hope we can get back to some sort of normal life before too long.

Regarding the season start – it’s all just guesswork and being an eternal optimist my guess is late May. While anything more than 9 rounds creates a compromised season, in these extraordinary times if we can fit in 12-15 rounds then we should play as many as we can. Probation/Relegation? scrap it for the season or have 1 up one down.

Forget the promotion and relegation, how do the finances work?
Are Club and VAFA Sponsors paying up ? Will full affiliation fees be charged to the Clubs? Will players pay their subs?
If the AFL are fearful that some Clubs could go broke if there is less than 17 games how are Ammo Clubs going to survive if there are fewer or no games?

Plenty of financial questions to answer before worrying about who goes up or down.

l doubt there will be a VAFA game played in 2020.

Yep..all good points.
Can’t see a game being played. This is a 6 month crisis at best.
Dont think we will see anyone paying anything. Fees, subs, sponsors.
Will be a full regroup in 2021 and god only knows what the landscape will be then for so many. Stay safe everyone. Health is the most important thing. Particularly our elderly and most vulnerable. Economics and footy we can worry about when we are out the other end.

And for the Clubs who may have paid their subs in advance to get the discount...

Just want to pick up on this along with the VAFA announcement that all VAFA staff are working from home.

Return affiliation fees asap. VAFA promised financial details just on a week ago. Nothing. VAFA now tells us contact staff by mobile/email. As a courtesy I would think putting the appropriate mobiles on the website would be mandatory so club officials can ring? Failed to do so.

Several comments here that need answering now. Who is paying for the entire staff to work from home? Does anyone seriously believe that there is anything to do currently for the football operations, full time media communications CEO etc. The VAFA Board needs to lead and lay off staff so that Clubs can survive.

THE EYE
