OS vs Vermont was an interesting opportunity to compare "where we're at" in relation to the EFL, even though the usual "just a praccy" and both sides having players out affected the teams.

OS convincingly dominated the first half, with Vermont coming back strong (or pressure being taken off?) in the third quarter, with both sides even for the last. Scores:
QT 5-1-31 to 2-0-12
HT 10-4-64 to 3-1-19
3QT 12-4-76 to 8-1-49
FT 15-7-97 to 11-1-67

Having spent most of the last 20 years watching ‘A’ grade football, I can attest that the difference between A and B grade reserves is substantial. No disrespect intended but when in 'A' grade Carey 2s were borderline uncompetitive. Last season in B grade they played finals.

I hope they can be competitive but unless they have added significant depth their ressies will cop some frightful hidings from the bigger clubs.
I agree on the point that the top level of players in A grade reserves, especially come finals time when sides have their best teams on the park would rival some lower rung B grade sides and would be very good sides in C grade, but there is a fairly big drop. I notice the bottom three sides in both A and B grade reserves last year were a fair way behind the top half dozen.

Always a had enormous respect for your mob FF. But I bleed blue & gold and could never ‘turn’.
JJ, If you didn't have a Primary School education you wouldn't be able to count all the A Grade Premiership flags
we have on display....ha ha. Yours is a very fine Club...

FF you must remember that JJ's club has more A grade flags than a few currently in A grade!

Hopefully DeLa go well this year Mr JJ, I miss them not being in Premier.
We are a fair way off it Mr P. Would be happy to just consolidate in B grade for a few years.

In 2024 Premier is made up of 8 APS school-based club and two Melbourne uni clubs and while there may be the odd ‘visitor’ I think that’s the way it will be for the foreseeable future. The nature of the top echelon relies on volume of talent coming through and strong networks to drive recruiting through employment/business opportunities. Only a handful of clubs have a combination of both and we (DLS) are not one of them.

Herein lies the problem for lower VAFA clubs that don't have the abovmentioned clout. Hard to entice players because it's hard to offer decent jobs, hard to get substantive sponsors and hard when competing with money clubs in other leagues. So yes the outsiders coming into the top echelon will always be visitors.

And kids that think they are better than what they are think they have to go to a A club

I'm not sure that's 100% true that this is somewhat of a new phenomenon, it has been happening for a while, and what's wrong with a young bloke trying to play the best level of football that they can, and usually it's done with mates.

I'd much rather see a young bloke go from say a C or D1 club to an A grade club than go and play in the country for money or go to play in the EFL, SFL, SFL or WRFL for money. Look at the young fella Gold Coast picked up in Brodie McLoughlin, a great VAFA story, from Bulleen Templestowe to De La to the VFL to the AFL.

Fair points but De La is a pretty big ‘all boys’ school so that shouldn’t be an issue. As far as networks go, my club SKOB now focuses on old boys so we don’t have to have the inconvenience of finding people jobs.

With the Wallis boys coming to SKOB, Mitch recruited his brother in law to the club as they have always wanted to play together, so he is also there for the right reasons.

You only have to look at Brett Eddy as to why a lot of clubs would decide to move away from the employment model.

So I would encourage any club at any grade to follow suit……..

Bring on ‘23!

It’s volume of talent not just volume Mr P. All boys school Parade College has an enrolment of around 2000, almost twice that of DLS. However they play in the 5th grade of the comp. While it’s a good start, volume (as in raw numbers) alone means nothing.

What sought of School football programms do Parade and De La have then? Is their inter school football competition strong?? These issues will have a part to play on the prosperity of their respective Ammo teams I would think.

I'm pretty sure the catholic schools play school footy on a Wednesday afternoon. Parade also have the issue where most of their good school players can go to play for money at local northern league clubs.

The ACC comp is quite good, although not a patch on the APS. In recent years many Catholic schools have joined the ACC from other comps so due to the number of schools the football competition is now divided into divisions based on school size. E.g the bigger schools (Parade, St Bernards, St Bedes, Whitefriars) play in Div 1. The smaller schools (Salesian, DLS, CBC St. Kilda) play in Div 2. This is not the case with all sports but it is for football so the standard may be diluted somewhat.

Back in my day (many, many, many years ago) it was arguably the strongest school comp going around. Over time the elite schools saw the benefits to their brand through sport results and have really invested in football (and other sports) and have gone ahead.

We (DLS) have the same issue as all clubs. We are located in proximity to SFL and EFL clubs and many school leavers play for coin in those and other comps. Others remain with their junior club who may have a senior affiliate. Nothing wrong with that btw and because the ACC is a mid week comp, they can stay engaged with local club and play for them on the weekend.

Agreed-the absolute zenith being 1968!!!

It's swings and roundabouts, and also gets back to how hard the people running the club want to become successful, whatever that means for them. Many are happy with their lot, that's why the VAFA is so great, and there can only be 10 teams in the top grade at any one time.

Regarding players going local for money, it's always been the case, for the last 50 years, whether that be in the sticks or Balwyn etc. We lost a heap to Bentleigh, Malvern and other VAFA clubs like St Mary's and Old Geelong recently, whilst St Bernards, De La, Old Scotch, Collegians and OX used to regularly pick off our best players year after year.

Throw in kids like Wardlaw, Taranto, Touk Miller, Rowbottom, De Goey, Hunter, Libba, Wallis, Stone etc getting drafted and kids like Phillips, Sullivan etc dominating VFL, it's a miracle we are anywhere near the Premier division.

So we all have our challenges.

You cannot be serious. You've just made a b...sh.t sandwich. Name some players that De La or the Bernies picked off year after year!

And if you want to go one step further Wardlaw started at De La Salle College, Wallis and Libba were Bernard's boys, Touk was a scholarship lad from the western suburbs. Mate fair go!

Why would I bother responding to a post like yours? A waste of my time.
