I think this would be a worthwhile experiment. This year, the last practice matches were played on the weekend of Saturday 4th/Sunday 5th March, which means there was a two week break before round 1. A match on Labour day would have been 9 days after the last practice match. It seems to good to pass up - a public holiday only three days before the season usually starts.

If that was done this year, the obvious match to shift to the Monday at 3:20 would have been Essendon-Hawthorn, as the other two MCG games were set in their blockbuster timeslots.

If this was done next year, perhaps St.Kilda would be a good choice, hosting a singular MCG game as they did this year as they seem to be the only Victorian club without a regular standalone marquee matchup.

So, next year could look something like this:

Last practice match weekend: Saturday and Sunday 2nd/3rd March

Monday 11th March
St.Kilda vs Coll/Ess MCG 3:20

Thursday
Carlton v Richmond MCG 7:50

Friday
someone vs someone etc etc

Thoughts?

We could play the Red Flag or the Internationale prior to the game as well.

Gough a smart man like you would know it celebrates the winning of weekends for workers which has enabled all sorts of things like professional footy and the leisure industry.

So it is the first holiday footy should honour

It's a national game, this is only a state public holiday.
To be fair it's also a public holiday in Adelaide, Canberra and Tasmania.

We don't need to be adding another bullshit "marquee" match between no doubt two Victorian teams.

Big problem is getting the ground(s) off the cricket clubs.

I dare say the players would also have something to say about a longer season.

Just a little reminder once again ..your little make believe club is in the Victorian League by invitation ..plus a hefty fee etc

Just be grateful you’re involved.

We had the "we have to have the grand final replay as the season opener" for years till that crashed and burned.

The only thing that the AFL should look at is whether it is possible to get a game each in Sydney and Brisbane the week before the current season opening (grounds permitting).

Both markets suffer a bit from the NRL getting a head start. The rest of us couldn't care whether the NRL starts or not.

Not sure how you make it work but a Friday night game in Sydney and a Saturday night game in Brisbane/Gold Coast would give both markets a chance to combat the NRL , give them great coverage and the TV networks would be happy with some extra timeslots.

What about taking advantage of public holidays in other states too A(V)FL
Collingwood have drawn Sunday twilights slots in Perth the week of their June public holiday at least a few times from memory, no doubt geared around generating a late game for Victorian crowds with the added benefit of knowing that the local public holiday the following day won’t compromise WA attendance.

It might not be explicit, stand alone games, but they are definitely at least considered

There it is :)

You could quote the whole passage:

"If that was done this year, the obvious match to shift to the Monday at 3:20 would have been Essendon-Hawthorn, as the other two MCG games were set in their blockbuster timeslots.".... which is alluding to the fact that if this fixturing strategy was adoped this year, that would have been the match on the early Monday, given Rich-Carl and Coll-Gee were settled and appropriate in those slots. I don't really care who it is, but I think St.Kilda (versus a big club) is the obvious choice.

Could we at least pick a National holiday to start our National competition on?
