How many players actually retire on their own terms though? It's the best salary they will ever earn, most are not giving it up easily unless they absolutely have to.

I've heard people like Dale Thomas talk about it, the club usually tap you on the shoulder and hint that either you retire or we are delisting you. So even when a player 'retires', it's rarely on their terms.

The AFC do not have the balls to do this.

Well that's fairly harsh. Are you saying someone like Nick Riewoldt didn't deserve to go out on his own terms because they never won a flag?

I think you can make exceptions for genuine club champions with strong accolades that are celebrated league wide

One things for sure and certain a 24 year old Chayce Jones offers a fair bit more going forward than a 32 year old Brodie Smith, if anyone goes out with that reasoning it should be Brodie Smith. And Oscar Ryan ain't going to be chasing Chad Warner around even if he did come in. The obvious in is Zac Taylor for Laird if he doesn't come up...midfielder for a midfielder.
Smith is playing poorly and making too many errors to remain in the team. No problem with Smith out.
A matchup for a potential Ryan could be several players. I just used Warner as he drifts forward enough for our defence to need a plan if he starts playing there too often. I'm not fussed really about Ryan's direct opponent. Whoever he gets, they'll be a good player. My point about chasing one of the Sydney players was really about the significant upgrade of "required standard" between SANFL and AFL.

Ryan might well struggle but he'll quickly learn the level he needs to attain. Valuable learning opportunity.

Brodie Smith officially dropped

They missed the word 'finally', his time was up last year.

Imagine there needing to be outside pressure to force a coach sitting 4-8-1 whose team hasn't made the finals for 7 seasons to play young players in the positions they were drafted for

That is how bad our coach is.

Given that Brodie's Dad was telling people two weeks ago in a corporate box that his son didn't have a contract for next year and has been dropped two weeks in a row, I've got a feeling he's already been told that this is his last year at the club. Can't imagine a games trigger would be less than say 15 games.

This is the disconnect with list management and coaching though, Nicks has still seen him best 22 all year, but list management are hoping to move him on.

We did it with Talia. That's what I don't get... he was a great player for a long time, his body let him down in that final season, but that was it. One bad year and thanks for your time, good luck in your future endeavours etc. And this is a guy who had been B&F and all Australian. And, harsh as it was, it was the correct call. So why could we make the hard but necessary call on one obviously-cooked club champion, but seem unable to do it with so many others?

Brodie Smith is up there with one of the most overrated Crows players in club history. People remember his long kicks at goal that he used to do, and they were great, but he has been a stat padder taking the kick ins, and phoning it in for several years now.

One is a 5x AA, one is not.
Smith has more AAs than 95% of other players to play the game. I'm not saying he is a HoFer, but he had been a good AFL player over a longer period than most. I still maintain that losing him and Gov in 2017 finals really hurt us in the GF, Smith was probably in the best form of his career then.

I don't think he's been the same post ACL, was a genuine elite half back before then and very important in 2012-2017.

Tex also not playing this one apparently.
Wow, that surprises me, he seemed very confident earlier in the week. Must not have pulled up well from training last night. If Burgess is still out, Borlase must be staying forward, but who else will we have up there?

Gollant? What about Himmelberg? Is he recovered from his cheekbone thing?

Don't think the club rate Gollant, not sure he plays for us again unless we had a mountain of injuries. Also not sure on Himmelberg, was originally only 1 week and has turned into 4.

Also hearing Murray will play. Berry sub. Max to potentially play more mid minutes. Perhaps a run with role (not completely sure on this one).
Okay you guys... Which one of you is Matthew Nicks?

So if true, we've got a debutante, a veteran dropped and an upcoming player given a major positional change.

Oh you could knock me down with a feather 😜 This stuff is enough to get my eyes open this week. Hope it all comes to fruition.

Smith was a gun. His prime was short but he was better than Max Holmes is right now who many think is a $1M player.

Sadly he’s become so fumbly, looks to have lost all of his core strength in his old age. And his kicking has turned to garbage, should’ve been dropped 10 weeks ago.

It's never too late to play this side

B Butts - Murray - Keane
HB Curtin - Borlase - O'Brien

R Strachan - Dawson - Berry
C Hinge - Soligo - Fogarty

HF Rachele - Schoenberg - Pedlar
F Rankine - Cook - Keays

I Nankervis - Michalanney - Sholl - Dowling
S Laird
