I don't think he's been the same post ACL, was a genuine elite half back before then and very important in 2012-2017.

His metres gained was fantastic in that period and for the most part was damaging. More of an issue for the club not replacing him around 2019/20, which they should have once it was evident his performance had started to drop.

Laird is not over the edge though, if he retired this year it would be with something left in the tank. North could do worse than Laird if they wanted an experienced head for a couple of seasons (far better than what they currently have with Shiels).

Smith was a gun. His prime was short but he was better than Max Holmes is right now who many think is a $1M player.

Sadly he’s become so fumbly, looks to have lost all of his core strength in his old age. And his kicking has turned to garbage, should’ve been dropped 10 weeks ago.

In the Richmond game he got a handball receive from Borlase on 50 and 5 years ago he never misses those; he completely shanked the kick and didn't make the distance. Been a theme for a while with his goal kicking too.

His prime was still a good 6-7 years, any player coming into the system would be happy with that.

I thought he was fairly serviceable last year too, but wow the cliff came quickly in 2024. At least the club had the sense to have a games trigger for an extension.

Shiels is purely playing for on field leadership. No idea if he actually provides that, but it's a Clarkson special
