3rd in the side for rubbish contributed too.
Hahaha vintage Drummond!

Douglas was very good against Freo, but aside from that, he is contributing less than he was at this time last year. He needs to find form and fitness sooner rather than later or his gold pass will run out. Same goes for Doughty.

I'm disappointed that people are still bagging Doughty. He hasn't been playing badly, he's been playing defensive roles so he often goes un-noticed. I think he's been doing his job well, he's generally reliable and is a good depth player in our club.

I have no issue with the Cook selection, even though Jacky's sanfl form may be a shade in front, Cook was very unlucky to be omitted after round 1

Jacky's turn is not that far away it still may even come this week

Would have thought Jacky earned it more thank Cookie. Though I'd take both over Shirley.

I hope this doesn't fit in with what a poster said after the Pies game.......

That whenever we play in Melbourne a certain youngster will be selected.

I wonder. Cooky is an interesting one, we never really hear anything about him, and whenever I saw him at training he never seemed to chat to anyone or anything. I wonder if he's fitting in okay? Do we know who his mentor is?

The poster also strongly implied that it was Dangerfield;)

FWIW, I think the Crows have shown fairly consistantly that they're not going to be homesick blackmailed into gifting people games, namely F Watts and J Meesen spring to mind.

Surely the less cynical amongst us can assume that the coaching staff found Cook the best available player?

I'm happy with the final 22. Cook or Jacky was probably a 50/50. Cook probably deserved it if we consider that his dropping was a bit harsh following the Collingwood win, although I would have been happy with Jacky's pace, flair and crumbing considering it may be wet. Good to see a bit more pace in the side, particularly on the MCG.

Can I just say HAHAHAHA at the guy on Channel 9 who congratulated Cooky for being picked for his debut. Nice to know these sport journalists do their research!

AS if Craig would select anything other than his best 22. Cooke had a great preaseason and was serviceable at worst in round one. Jacky has been good but another couple of good games needed before he is selected.

HOpefully we can win this one in a canter and be ripe for the big game next week.

Cook is a Crows fan anyway...and has family here.:thumbsu:
the Meese was gifted 2 games at the end of 2007, which i thought was to try and increase his trade value (because why play someone we knew was going to leave us at year's end, esp since he wasn't in our best 22)... anyway, we got Cook with the pick (38).
...like everyone else, i assumed Jacky's SANFL form might have had him ahead of Cook (despite Cook having the better pre-season)...but personally i'm a little more excited that Cook is playing over Jacky (Jacky will get his turn soon enough), because Cook is full of excitement and pace to burn.

Yea, agreed.

I tend to think Jacky probably deserved a run ahead of Cook, but have no problems what so ever with Cook getting first crack.

The omission of Shirley (and even Symes) are pretty big ones for what they suggest. It seems like Craigy went out of his way to try and find a place for Shirley in the side, but he struggled a bit, and now it's a case of Shirley having to force his place into the side with exceptional form, and not maintain his position with average form.

Rob Shirley was brought into the side last week for one reason only. G Ablett Jnr. Melbourne don't have a GAJ, so Shirley's out.

(And seeing as GAJ chalked up 46 possies and three goals, it may be the last time we see Rob Shirley run around barring a massive midfield injury list).

if a player looking is looking over his shoulder instead of focusing on his own performance then he should not be in the side

it is what it is, it is professional sport, selection is dictated by form, good sides like Geelong have depth that create selection for spots

there is no place for the mentally weak, Maric will come back a better player, other players will know that they need to play well to retain their spots
That's all well and good. Logic certainly dictates that competition for spots means that players will be motivated to play well. How could that be a bad thing? But we're not dealing with laboratory conditions! We're dealing with the human condition.

Competition for spots is a double-edged sword. Has the competition for ruck spots helped Maric's form so far this season? How much freedom would someone play with if they know they are one bad game away from being dropped?

I guess it depends on how heavily you subscribe to the theory that a settled line up is a trademark of successful sides.

He wasn't even played as a tagger as we play a full zone. He was brought in to fill a midfield role probably because he has a more AFL mature body which helps against Geelong. He didn't perform well and was subsequently dropped.

I just got simple question for you! How can a player tag another player when his team is playing zone for the entire game?

As soon as I walked out of Footy Park last week, I knew that people would dump their shit on Shirley by pointing to Ablett's sensational game. Fact is, we played some version of the zone at all times against Geelong, Whether it was 3-3-3-3-3-3 zone or whether it was a combination of 2-3-5-5-3 zone. At no stage were we man to man in that game. Ablett was picked up who ever was closest to him. Whether it was Shirley, Doughty, van Berlo, Thompson, Vince, Goodwin, Johncock, Symes.....etc. To point to Ablett's game as a reason why Shirley should be or was dropped never to play again is just far fetched.
