Could hamling go forward to play a defensive roll on Mcgovern maybe?
Kennedy's really the only tall forward to worry about. Would be nice having Hamling back there for resting rucks though, I'd assume Duman probably gets Darling if he stays in, Johno could take resting ruck?

Edit - Oh and Ryan to Waterman

Suspect Kersten will be given another go to replace Tabs. As long as our smalls structure up well, Kersten just needs to fight his arse off to make a contest and our delivery needs to be disciplined enough not to play to Eagle's strengths.

On that, its about quickness and and ball use - it's the only way we'll have a chance. In other words, I don't think Tabs (or whoever replaces him) is the issue, it's how we play up the ground that will determine it, the fwd players just need to hold shape and apply pressure. Relying on them for marks and goals will be a distant secondary concern, the goals will mostly have to come from midfield run. If we're going to try to rely on marking power up fwd with contested marking, the game is over already.

Is the Derby too big of a game to blood the last player of our 2016 draft yet to taste action?

Deep forward, stints in the ruck.

Strnadica is raw, but he is a forward first before adding ruck to his game. Apeness fits the same sort of role.

Hurn has been very good this year

I'm just thinking more in the sense that without Tabs, Mcgovern likely has a real field day. It'll be important to stop those intercept marks and bring the ball to ground, so as our KPF, Hamlings role would be to run with Mcgovern and spoil basically. Hurn could well be 'tagged' as well.
I know its not ideal having a real defensive forward set-up, but its going to be critical that we at least compete in the air

We haven't had a good KPF since pav, and just as one starts developing he gets injured. McCarthy was good tonight though!
Kersten will come in I reckon

Lets do it. Have him forward and swap with Sandi. Let's get him to lead up to the ball behind Nic Nat and drive his knee into him from behind for karma.

I don't think it's the Derby that's the problem, it's debuting against McGovern down back, and Naitanui and Lycett in the ruck. A bit too much to ask of a skinny second year rookie.

We can't bomb it long. But eagles' game plan pushes teams to do just that. We ll have to do handball, quick fast ball movement like tonight- play through the corridor.

More confident that we have Pearce/Hamling/Ryan next week. Playing against Kennedy, is a nightmare- but Pearce is here!

If our mids cant get on top (which they should), people here will get a rude shock by what Kennedy does to Pearce.
Guarding Kennedy's not a one man job, hes very predictable which makes it easy for the mids to kick too and West coast do deliver well to him. For pearce to win he needs good pressure up the field and some decent help down back (mainy in the form of guys filling holes Kennedy would lead into).

Not giving them enough respect I think. Darling will tear us a new one if we don't take him seriously.

Luke Ryan has him covered.

A.Pearce —> Kennedy
Hamling —> Lycett
Ryan —> Darling
Wilson —> Rioli
Blakeley —> LeCras
S.Hill —> Cripps

The role on offer is a Forward / Ruck one. Whomever comes in, McGovern is going to McCarthy, or playing a loose man - it's irrelevant to the question of who plays. In fact what might be more relevant is the fact the eagles tend to play two rucks, which imo gives space to choose someone who is more ruck-y than forward-y.

Still, can't see them going past either Cox or Apeness; I'd love them to give Strnadica a go as he was the best ruck out of himself, Meek and Jones last week and can be dangerous forward as well, but I am not sure if (even though he probably only gets 60% gametime if he plays) his endurance is up to it at AFL level yet.

If it’s just Kerstrn in for Tabs it’ll be the exact same result as last year where McGovern marked everything and we struggled to kick a goal. I’d bring Ape in for Tabs and I think Duman deserves to hold his spot. He offers dash and a good kick out of the back to complement the rest of the backline (except Hammer) which must fill the mids and forwards with confidence.
