Watched about half and lost interest.

Again predicated on notion that US/Israel is be definition always good and the Arabs always bad and shifty.

That's why The Bureau is so good. Has a level of nuance and political maturity you just don't get in pretty much any Anglophone production.

If you exclude pretty much the entire output of John LeCarre. I rewatched A Most Wanted Man the other day and it is highly underrated. Great performance from PSH.

I don't think The Spy was completely without nuance on the issue of Israelies only being good.

True re Le Carre but even that is posited from the insider's we should be better type of thing.

I can't really use examples from The Bureau without giving away spoilers.

Watch it - you'll love it.

Now, l know nothing about finance, business or tax but finally some think-tank ( l believe ) has said we should scrap tax returns.

Been saying it for years, what is the point of them ? Seemed simple to me. Pay less tax and don't scramble every year trying to get some $$$'s back.

With all due respect, your second statement proves your first here, Hoju.

It's actually a sensible suggestion. Most people are PAYG and the ATO gets all the data directly from their employer. We should be able to do tax returns by exception. Based on the available data the government could work out a standard deduction and if you are happy to take the standard deduction you just do nothing and your tax return will automatically be calculated.

Why can’t we just do the deductions as we go?
seems stupid that we have to wait till the end of the year to do it.

Oh, I definitely agree with that. Streamlining the tax return system makes sense. It's not the same as abolish tax returns and pay less tax, though.

Explain simply if you can for me.

The idea is that for the vast majority of people their tax returns are very simple. They earn wages, pay tax, and scramble around to find a few deductions at the end of the year. We could have a system where we say that unless you opt to do a tax return because you have a negatively geared property or some other complication, then the ATO will automatically apply a standard slightly generous tax deduction to you and on a set date your return will be automatically processed by the system. That might mean that 50% or more of all taxpayers have no need to go down to H & R Block or do their own returns online. It doesn't mean that returns are abolished but it is a massive streamlining of the system.

Exactly! I think it is a great idea.

They would have to re-jig the PAYG system as well, as it is geared to slightly over-taxing salary/wage earners, which is why most get refunds on tax returns. Should be easy enough to achieve.

A yearly average tax reduction of $600 per taxpayer might not have been popular policy with government until recent times, of course.

The economist was talking about a standardised $3k deduction which would give full-time workers on average wages an automatic refund of around $2k.
