I don't remember them dominating up forward. Maybe once or twice over 15 years.
Specific times when they were sat forward for long periods both were scary. I remember a game against hawthorn when danger damaged his leg somehow and couldn't run. Just sat at full forward and marked and kicked goals for fun.

I did not find it fun.

Goals kicked
Ablett JR 445
Hird 343
Martin 328
Dangerfield 327

Disposals
Ablett JR 8896
Dangerfield 7585
Martin 7094
Hird 5075

I'm happy to take it on goal average. I had no idea Ablett kicked that many. Hird played CHF at 185cm and won a brownlow, then won a norm smith from the midfield. Dusty is the best big game player just about ever. I'd actually put Pavlich ahead of some of those guys mentioned in this thread, played both midfield and CHF to all australian level, CHF being the hardest position on the ground.

Pavlich is up there, number 8 on my list
I created my own spreadsheet which adds all these awards, plus premierships, goals and disposals. It skews towards length of time in the game.

My top 10 are:
L Matthews
G Ablett JR
K Bartlett
L Franklin
J Dunstall
T Lockett
B Harvey
M Pavlich
W Carey
N Riewoldt

Solid list u got there.
Took a bit of effort, pulling the information from AFL tables and each players Wikipedia page.

IMO you have great players who get the ball and can kick at least a goal a game, over their careers. Their careers are also longer.

Injury has cruelled some very good careers and then there are others that may be better for a year or too, but are not consistent over a longer period.

I put the spreadsheet together, so I could be comfortable in my opinion on who the best players are, rather than just going with a "vibe.

Hird was also cut down by injury right at the time he had become one of the best players in the game. For three years, he battled on-going foot injuries and he came back and dominated in 2000.
Played multiple positions and was one of the best high markers of his generation.

Dunno about high markers (Modra, Howe, Snr), but he was certainly a very strong overhead mark.

I feel like people underrate Hird because he became a shite, drug cheating coach. At the time, Carey and Hird were pretty widely considered one and two in the league.
As much as I can’t stand Essendon, he was the equal of any of those guys. Surprised to see him at number 6 on most lists

theasian hope you don't mind, I already had the first 7 pages of these tallied anyway.

Number 1 = 6 points, number 2 = 5 points etc.

89 people handed in complete lists. Posts were ignored that simple said "GAJ/Dusty the best...who cares about the rest" etc. And there were a few for both of these players in particular like that.

The .5's are where people ranked players on the same level e.g Ablett and Judd tied for first, as these were still parts of 1-6 lists.

Ablett the definitive number 1. Judd edging out Voss in the tier below. Martin, Buckley and Hird in the group below that, with Martin marginally ahead of Buckley who is marginally ahead of Hird.

Can you please modify your calculations to give Martin < 1 vote for me?

I would have more than a handful of players between Buckley at 5 and Martin at 12 or so.
