Good to see the thread find a new lease of life in the off season. Hope to tally the votes to see the general consensus in about two weeks time.

So far , mostly its GAJ at 1, Judd and Voss fighting for 2nd. Martin mostly 4th, with Hird and Buckley bringing up the rear.

Hmmmm
Lets start with the easy one

6. Hird

Now I have to do the hard work.

1. Ablett
Pendelbury
2. Voss
3. Buckley
Ricciuto
4. Judd
McLeod
5. Martin
Swan
Bartel

6. Hird

I feel like people underrate Hird because he became a shite, drug cheating coach. At the time, Carey and Hird were pretty widely considered one and two in the league.

Buckley has between 97 and 2003 was either considered furst or top 3.
Hird imo was overrated back then and the media love child.

Many players at the time in those years, had Buckley number 1. Crawf paid tribute to him in Brownlow speech. Bucks copped the Collingwood and figjam hate though.

Hird went at 20 disposals and 1.4 goals a game. If score involvements were recorded I think he'd have been in the very elite, similar to Martin from this generation.

In reality what hurt him was having his 1997 and 1999 seasons completely derailed in his prime. 1997 he was off to a cracking start, and I've no doubt he'd have dominated in that 1999 Bombers team.

So a bit of a "what if" when it comes to Hird's career in relation to the others. The other big one of course around a bunch of Ablett's incredible seasons being wasted at Gold Coast. Plug them into any halfway relevant side (especially one competing for premierships) and his lead in this grouping would be considerably greater.

GAJ clear first
Judd clear second
The rest is a real struggle, and I have trouble stopping my bias from influencing my ranking because one of these players oversaw industrial scale doping after he stopped playing. I can't get over that.

It's new thread to carry on the dick measuring contest between Richmond and Geelong supporters from the Dusty threads.

Here, the Collingwood, Lions, Eagles, Carlton, Essendon fans can all join in.

They are the best of the best Midfielders who plyed their footy in the 21st Century.

They've won 8 brownlows and 6 Norm Smiths between them.

Gaz Jnr comes 1st and the rest you can throw a blanket over, hard to split.

It wil come down to leadership qualities, carrying your team over the line, Skills and toughness, performances in big games, indvidual awards etc.

Each of these six have their own claim to be the best.

Gaz jnr the most consistent and dominant over a long period, Buckley the most skillful and the best kick, Hird the most versatile, Judd the most explosive and probably had the highest peak. Martin, undoubtebly the best big game performer, Vossy the toughest and the best leader.

How would you rank them over their careers?

For me, I'm leaning towards.

1 Gary Ablett Jnr
2. Voss
3.Martin
4. Hird
5. Buckley
6. Judd
And dusty has won half of those norm smiths lol
Dusty clear at number 1
Gaz 2
Voss 3
Buckley 4
Judd 5
Hird 6

Lol ffs
Martin is alot more damaging and clutch , 3 norm Smiths , goodbye.

When was that ‘time’? Carey’s best was 2000 and before
