Buckley was best BOG , But Voss stepped up in the final quarter and if remember correct, kcked the goal which gave Lions the lead and was instrumental in willing the Lions over the Line.

It allcomes down to whether Bucks performance really stood out enough to win Norm Smith even in a losing team

No love for Collingwood's best ever? Or you rank Pendles higher than Bucks?
I don't rate Bucks higher than the other four greats of the game.

The ability to be impartial allows that.

I doubt Buckley would be Collingwood's best ever - reckon the Coventry brothers are both ahead of him.

Buckley about equal with Pendlebury (would need to do some pretty serious analysis if I wanted to split them).

Voss kicked his goal in 3rd quarter, Lynch got a soft free in last to put Lions ahead then Aker sealed it in last few minutes.

Looks like Gaz jnr , followed by Judd , then Voss and Martin, with Hird and Buckley the bottom two is the ordr most have rated them.

Anyway no disrespect coming last in this buch of players.

I'll update the tally sometime next week.

As far as groupings you'd say there's definitely an A+ group in Ablett/Judd/Voss and then a tier below that for Martin/Buckley/Hird.

Having watched their careers this is my general inclination anyway.

Very hard to split some of these guys. Not sure exactly what metric to use. I'll just go with: who would I want to draft to my club at the start of their career, with the aim of winning premierships.

1. GAJ
2. Greg Williams - for those who never saw him play, he would burrow in and win the ball in the centre circle, and then fire a 35m handball laterally and hit a bloke sprinting at full speed down the line of the centre square, and they'd set up a Carlton goal. Wouldn't matter if it was his left or right hand. Would also routinely bob up in the forward line and kick a lazy 3 or 4, while still getting 30.

3. Hird - it's funny when you look at his stats now, because they're unremarkable, but he was just simply a match-winner, who would always bob up and do just what his team needed, exactly at the moment they needed it. Perhaps the most freakish player I've seen other than GAS.
4. Buckley - underrated IMO. Early in his career he was an unbeatable one-one-one player. Watched him go to CHB in the 90s and get 30 touches and hold Carey goalless. His pinpoint kicking over 60m was an unbelievable weapon. He did it all. Ultra consistent in H&A and massive performer in finals.
5. Dusty - hardest player to rate, because he didn't have many dominant H&A seasons. But his peak 4 years and his finals record is so freakish that I'd still draft him ahead of the next few guys.
6. Goodes - could do it all, including in finals
7. Judd - a great player but a shade overrated IMO. I think the aesthetics of his play, side-stepping around guys while accelerating out of packs, has led people to overrate him. He was a very good inside mid at Carlton, but not super damaging (compared to others on this list). Not a great long kick like a Buckley, or goal-kicker like a Dusty. Had a couple of great years at WC, but had 2 of the best mids in the game helping him.
8. Voss - again, a shade overrated IMO. A bit like a Selwood, he knew how to impose himself on big moments. But he was not actually a prodigious ball winner, or clearance or contested possession winner. Handy going forward but didn't actually have the scoreboard impact of other guys on this list. Obviously a great leader, but that's not enough to get him above the other guys on this list.
9. Danger - underrated IMO. He was an absolute clearance and contested beast, while still having a lot of scoreboard impact. Think he's underrated because, unlike Judd, he in an unaesthetic player. He plays like a brute, but tbh he basically does all the things Judd did, and over a longer period. Has played some outstanding finals, but a few quieter ones too, which drops him down a bit.
10. Bont - another guy who can do it all
Apologies to R Harvey, Black, S Mitchell, Fyfe, Bont, Cousins, Selwood

I think Buckley is easily the most talented AFL era footballer to play for Collingwood.

Rising star, Brownlow, Norm Smith, goal a game average, AA Half Back, AFL Draft combine kicking test is named after him.

Of these players,

Chris Judd
GAJ
Martin
Hird
Voss
Nathan Buckley

Hard to split Martin and Hird. Top 4 were a level up on Voss and Buckley. Don't think Voss was even best midfielder in his team.

For some younger fans, it's also worth noting that Williams was just as good at Sydney, and just as good at Geelong. He was the rarest of things - an absolute genuine superstar from day one (along with Ablett).

Williams, Judd and GAJ the best midfielders I have seen.

Many will not have seen Williams but that guy controlled entire games like no one before or since. First player to regularly get 40+ disposals and he was probably the best user of the football ever to play.

Have never seen anyone similar to Williams. He would win the clearance like a Tom Liberatore, but then be so creative and with such unbelievable vision that his team would be having a shot on goal 20 seconds later.

Sam Mitchell would also win the clearance and then create a bit of space, and kick long on either foot to often create a scoring opportunity, but not like Diesel lol.

Yep I can't split Williams and Ablett junior. For different reasons but very hard to choose between two.
