Bring back the umpires that weren't seen......Crouch, Deller, Robinson....

He doesn't seem to have a bias for any particular team which is more than you can say for a section of the umpires going around

If you dislike every umpire then you are the problem, not every existing umpire. Give them a break, its a tough job.

Not sure if you read the op post?? He's more critical of them not being truly professional. It's the AFL s fault not the individuals. The error rate in umpiring too high.

The fact that we know his name is part of the problem. Umps should be the support act, not the lead act. He loves being centre stage a bit too much.

unfortunately like a lot of footballing perceptions, i think television crew and commentators are partly responsible for this.
how do we know his name? someone like BT giving him a nickname. why is he centre stage? because the camera has put him there.

umpires in general have become pantomime villains thanks to television and the rules of the game - the crowd reactions and camerawork when a footy might have rolled out of bounds deliberately is pretty telling. it's only natural that television networks capitalise on this drama. the public might hate umpires... but they can't get enough of hating them.

He is a good umpire because he doesn't worry about the "feel" of the game, he doesn't worry about notions of "putting the whistle away" and he doesn't allow his judgement to be prejudiced by trying to anticipate play too much.

A good umpire:

Knows the rules.
Pays attention.
Pays free kicks when he sees them, regardless of context.

I think he does a pretty good job of this.

Lucky for you guys. Not so lucky for the Bloods. I can already see Essendon's stretched out Sellwood (Jo D), diving like Mathew Mitcham and RR gifting him 7 frees forward of 50.
Here's hoping. You blokes usually get it pretty easy so would be a nice change

The Joey Crawford of the AFL. There are bigger issues with him.

The other umpires I always feel like the rules and direction are more to blame with most of their bad free kicks, Ray Chamberlain would always be a bad umpire.

To be fair, it's not like the umpires asked to be Micd up (as far as I'm aware). The AFL has chosen to have it this way for transparency, and the only reason we know their names is because the commentators repeat them to us. Ray isn't on the footy show every second week or promoting himself, the AFL has chosen to make it this way.
