Link to the proposed Referendum, from the Referendum Working Group:
(Edited 6 April 2023)

These are the words that will be put to the Australian people in the upcoming referendum as agreed by the Referendum Working Group (made up of representatives of First Nations communities from around Australia):

"A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?"

As well as that, it will be put to Australians that the constitution be amended to include a new chapter titled "Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples".

The details would be:

The Prime Minister has committed to the government introducing legislation with this wording to parliament on 30 March 2023 and to establishing a joint parliamentary committee to consider it and receive submissions on the wording, providing ALL members of Parliament with the opportunity to consider and debate the full details of the proposal.

Parliament will then vote on the wording in June in the lead up to a National Referendum.

The ANU has issued a paper responding to common public concerns expressed in relation to the proposed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice here:

Summary details of the key points from this paper may be found in Chief post here:
The Uluru Statement from the Heart:
Not specifically No. In any case it does not form part of the Referendum proposal.

Seeing as things have gotten a bit toxic in here, let's try to return things to a more civil tone.

The following will result in warnings to begin with, and if said behaviour continues will be escalated:
  • referring to another poster as racist without direct provocation.
  • dismissing or deriding another poster's lived experience.
  • personal attacks or one line posts designed solely to insult or deride.

You might notice that the final rule is from the board rules. Thought we should probably remember that this is against the rules in case it's been forgotten.

Let's play nicely from here, people.

If it doesn't get up, are the ones who voted no racists? We'd have over half the country touted as racists.

Correct.

Virtually my whole family and all their friends, half of my friends, half the people I've worked with are all racists. I'm not surprised how many vehemently want to vote no.

You should ask them why they're so comfortable being lied to.

Hurts, lol. You couldn't knock the fuzz off a peach mate.
This is just like the same sex marriage vote, it encourages a section of our society to be the worst versions of themselves. All that latent bigotry is suddenly given an outlet.

What if they claim to be listening to Lidia Thorpe in voting no ?

That must be a real conscience challenger for many.

I'm not sure many of them know who she is. The ones that do probably think what a good little servant doing as she's told.

Brutal.

I understand indigenous culture is better taught in schools these days - they apparently do an acknowledgment of country before class each day. But I’m in my 30s and definitely didn’t happen when I was in school, so it’s only a small proportion of the voting public who grew up in that era.

“Truth” should’ve come before a referendum vote. Can’t get a majority to agree with you if that majority inherently dislike those people in the first place.

Truth is it’s still acceptable to make racist jokes and remakes against Indigenous people behind closed doors. This referendum isn’t about constitutional change, it’s “do you like Aboriginals or not?” And a lot of people can’t wait to vote No as if that will stop Acknowledgment of Country or the flying of the Aboriginal flag.

Maybe Albo just needs to point to Newman’s racism and use it as an excuse to stop the vote as “Aboriginals are suffering” instead of having a majority formalise it in a referendum.

People don’t need acknowledgement of country to know our history. I don’t think there’s a lack of knowledge about colonisation/dispossession. Maybe amongst new arrivals.

Before EVERY class? Every single one?
