Hocking's explanation was that it opens up the 45-degree kicks that are deemed to be the most successful in opening up the play. But if the rules are channeling the ball movement in one direction, where do you think the defenders will set up? As you say, not thought through at all.
Yeah a lot of their rule changes and explanations actually make a fair bit of sense theoretically and when written down on paper.

The issue is, whoever is changing them continues to be so short sighted not to see the fact that people literally get a salary to try and exploit rules to their own teams advantage.. and whatever intention they have when the rule is changed, the reality is it won’t come close to looking like that in practice.

You would’ve thought they’d have learnt from the numerous other times it’s turned to shit. Has a rule change over the last 5 years actually helped in any way? Everyone accepts it eventually and moves on but none of it has improved the game. Half the general public can see the disaster coming from a mile off at the start of next season, so why not the guys that get paid to run the game?

No more mark substitution? No wonder Mason Cox complained about the changes.
I saw that article headline with AFL star then I saw the picture of Cox and nearly spat my coffee out!!!!

“Realistically, David’s got two to three years to really get us into a position where we’re competing regularly in the top four and ultimately looking to win a premiership.

“That’s our ultimate goal.”

That is just delusion. They should have hired a coach to get them through a 3-5 year rebuild. The last thing North needs is to bounce up to just outside the top 8 for a few seasons, as they will just be stalling the inevitable (which is what they did in 2018 and 2019). Take your medicine, sit in the bottom 4 for three seasons or so to get top end talent, develop them and then grab some role players via trade etc on the way up to get you back into contention. Carlton and Brisbane both showed the way to do this.

They can't afford to bottom out, they're already broke and the members/sponsors they'll lose from being dog shit for an extended period of time will make them fold. So they try to stay thereabouts instead, hovering between 7-12th in a desperate bid to stay solvent. It's actually quite beautiful to watch the ongoing mediocrity.

but surely the biggest problem is that having made a poor decision, they will not rescind this before adding in further changes.
What we end up with is an accumulation of terrible decisions with more bad decisions made to try and undo the created mess

Is there another professional sport in the world which changes their rules constantly like we do?

It’s like following the big bash.

No.

Other sports (like NBA which I follow pretty religiously) have rule changes around salaries, list sizes, coaching structure but nothing that affects game play. It's essentially been the same since it was born.

The three point line? Goal-tending? Shot clock? Rules around getting out of the back court/keyway etc? These are all rules within the last 50 years of the sport or so.

Rules change in every sport (even the simple ones like soccer have the backpass and offside rules as relatively recent introductions compared to the age of the game) but the AFL does seem more intent on tinkering and fine-tuning. It's not necessarily a bad thing as the fundamentals are still very much there. Things like zones being drawn on the field would be a fundamental change.

All pro sports have rule changes. Whether they're safety, entertainment or technology related occasionally things have to change.
The AFL change rules / interpretations of rules unofficially on a weekly basis and officially almost every season. Whilst individually most of these don't fundamentally change the fabric of the game, collectively it's amateurish. Even kids in the playground don't change rules this often.

You shouldn't have to study up on a plethora of new rules every season like it's a new season of a mobile game nor should you have to watch the first 2 games of the week to work out what rule they'll be highlighting.

Except when the AFL do it, it's yearly and I'm fairly confident the meeting starts with the question "So what changes can we make that will generate more revenue?"

Don't get me wrong, I definitely agree with the premise of both of your posts and do sort of hope the tinkering stops for a while. The yearly obsession with rule changes is annoying and I don't think it's achieving what the AFL wants - more attractive and attacking football.
