We have once again picked very well.

Talia will be our next full back but can play at either end of the ground. Very good below his knees and very good one on one.

Gunston could be one of the steals of the draft. Long kicking goalkicker he can reguarly kick goals from 50m out. Can play at either end of the field and once again is very clean with his hands and disposal. As they say in classic draft speak - i couldnt believe he got that far. Look forward to this boy being a star.

Sam Shaw is another 192cm midfielder. This boys for his height is very quick and he is a left footer who can play on the wing or at half forward or at half back. he needs a bit of work on his kicking but he reads the ball off hands with great skill and football smarts. Very athletic and exciting.

Craig although not a 200cm ruckman was very effective for SA in the championships with his deft taps at stoppages around the ground.

Once again we have drafted well and for the future we can look forward to a team that has height, mobility and increasing athleticism.

and this is justifying exactly what I beleived pre-draft
why waste time guessing players here and there
Rendell will get good players anywhere

RIGGY,

Look forward to Norman being a bit likethe next Bernie Vince.

Came from nowhere. Only played a few games for Sandringham. Mainly played for hailebury College - but he can play at either end of the field and has got that touch of class.

You need players who can kick long - he can kick very long goals.

I only wish we had a few more picks. Would have loved to get Bartlett, Moore and Melksham.

Interesting that all of our Vic boys came from private schools again.

I assume you seen a bit of these kids Bigman, from memory you have a pretty good track record when it comes to these things, so to hear you rave about these boys sets my heart at ease a little.

Thank GOD for that:p Would hate to see a perfectly good footy club ruined by a public school education, they don't call us the Chardonnay sippers for nothing:rolleyes::D

Premature thread. Let's wait a while before we start claiming that we cleaned up in this draft.

Agree. I would have liked to have seen a bit more variety in our drafting rather than stocking up on talls for the 2nd year in a row but I guess if there aren't really any quality mids or smalls you just have to go with the best available.

I remeber this time last year the Crows said they went tall with Davis, McKernan and Lee because they didn't think there would be many good talls this year. Funny how they still ended up with Talia.

Motto of the story is to NOT listen to Rendell's media comments ;) Fooled us all.

He must be convinced the GC will pilpher EVERY tall the next couple of drafts and the WS to follow.

Jackster and Sekaj I call it as I see it. The year we picked up Josh Kruger from Glenelg I went from having a full head of hair to being bald - we drafted poorly. This year belive me we have done well.

Talia will be Ruttens replacement in time. He may be able to release Otten to other positions.

Gunston - he can play in most positions and is not a lumbering tall at all. Is likely to take over from the Birdman in time. He is a mobile, athletic type.

Sam Shaw - think of maybe a Joel Corey type player. He is mobile quick and just happens to be 192cm. his kicking is an issue however and needs some work a la Cook.

Craig - his name demanded that we pick him. Neil's son. Only joking. Very good tap ruckman who may be able to play KPP as well. Good insurance for the future.

Why not sing from the rooftops when you know we have picked some veyr athletic, mobile talls who can mark.

For years we played with crabs which were either lumberers or could not take a mark to help themselves.

Gunston or Shaw will become real stars of this club. I have no doubt.

Talia in time will be the player who will be able to play on the monster talls that Rutten often finds difficult - Kosischke for example.

Looking forward to th develeopement of these boys.

I admire your vocal chords "but" as with all fresh young kids just out of school time will tell.

M Rendell does have the runs on the score board so far though & who is to say that another century is not forth coming with this years draft.

Fooled me, that's for sure.

When you think about it, these new clubs will obviously go for talls in the next 2 drafts as their first requirement, so our chances of getting a good tall after this year will be very very slim.

Rendell says that next year's draft will be a beauty, and given that there is always far more mid-fielders than talls, we should be able to latch onto a couple of good mid-fielders in next year's draft.

Do not want to sound negative about drafting as dont have knowledge to challenge Rendell or any Clubs Recruiter .
But think many posters are doing a major turnaround with what they wanted in mid fielders and crumbing forwards etc and we get another 4 tall kpp type players already have a lot of .
Understand Talia pick as he was rated and was there when didnt expect, but now posters raving about Gunston who was only mentioned on BF when friend told of Crows keen interest in although agree his highlights are impressive and also about Shaw and was never mentioned on BF even as a low pick and now he is a future star and he might be . When Craig got to pick 61 then guess because U-18 AA good pick up but where is he going to fit and what role . The slider we picked up at 61 or 62 last year in Lee is no longer with us . I would have to seen us pick up at least 1 speedy goalkicker type . But we havent and whilst our draft picks last 2 yrs and this one look good . None apart from maybe Danger have proven themselves yet. It just worries me that Rendell wants to come from left field all the time . Dont forget all recruiters have all info. and all are clever footy people .
Like all Crows fans lets hope the McKernans ,Davis and Sloane from last year become the players in 2010 we think they will and that this years recruits can develope into quality players that will add to our squad over next few years but lets not call them stars this week when we didnt think so last week just because Matt has recruited them.
Guess will be shot at but really not being negative just putting a different view out there .

The thing with our picks is that they really are replacing players that we let go of. And Shaw is more of a utility type than a KPP. He might be 191 cm but he more of a Joel Corey 192 cm than Brendan Fevola 192 cm.

Tall running players are worth their weight in gold and we might just have snared a couple

Several points in response to you:

I think that equating "talls" to KPPs is erroneous. Quite a few of our talls were/are midfielders (eg Otten, Shaw) and are athletic enough to play midfield/wing/running defender/running forward type roles.
Its the way the game is evolving and i think that our recruiting/list management team is ahead of the pack.

In any case, it may not have been that much of a deliberate choice to select tall players - the cards may have just fallen that way in that most of the "decent" smaller midfielders were taken before our picks.

In addition, IMO Rendell is not coming from left-field as is commonly perceived - on the contrary, i think that his selection processes are a reflection of our better, more thorough research and analysis, and also reflecting the professionalism and quality of our recruiting staff and their ability plus the resources the Club gives them.

From reading his comments, he expected some onballers to fall, but that didnt happen.
I dont know if that means he was always going to go talls, or that the smalls he wanted were gone at the appropriate picks ?
I suspect a bit from each column.

I think this is a very good point, only 5-6 of the top 30 chosen this year could genuinely be considered KPP/Ruck types, as opposed to last years draft where 10 of the top 16 were such. I think Rendell may have found that the vast majority of his mid sized picks were off the table by the time his picks came around, however a couple of quite highly rated talls were left.

I also think that when you have a lot of late round picks such as we do, it becomes a case of beggars can't be choosers, you've got to go in with the mindset of picking up the best available, no matter the type, otherwise you could end up wasting your pick on a player not worthy of say a first rounder, just so you can fill a specific need.

Myke Cook and Rory Sloane will prove themselves early on next year. Cook is an excitement machine who will be capable of sparking the side with pieces of freakishness while Sloane will establish himself as one of our classiest runners.

Rendell didn't fool me anyway! Not sure where the quote is but I suspected we had our eye on a tall smokey or two after we opted not to persist with Lee for a second year. You don't just chuck a first year player off the list because of attitude issues, knowing full well you have to pay out his second year contract anyway, unless there are a couple of blokes you're very keen on in the upcoming draft. Throw in the removal of Gill and Kite and when you look at the profiles of who we've picked up, we've more or less kept the balance of our list in check as James_37 said.

Anyway stuff the wait and see approach. Bigman has a decent track record (you might call Ed Curnow a miss) so if he's stoked, chances are we're on at least a couple of winners here.

People get so hung up on height because they think about the olden day 180cm = midfielder 185-190cm = utility/3rd tall 191-193cm = KPP and 194cm+ = Ruck.

That's the AFL of ten years ago. We've now got 193cm midfielders, we just drafted a 195cm ruckman who happens to be 6cm shorter than our gun forward K-Tip. You can't pigeon hole players based on height anymore. Just because we drafted 4 blokes over 190cm doesn't mean they're all KPP.

I look forward to the day we draft our Aaron Sandilands crumber.
