Club forces player to retire - club sucks
Club extends ageing players contract - club sucks

Whatever move the club makes, they suck!!

Can not win.
How can a club force a player to retire?
They can not renew their contract or pay them out.
If they retire that’s up to the player not the club.

Nobody has said that delisting Dougie was bad, haven’t seen a single post.
Yet twisting the fact he is delisted/retired on the club, and complaining that the club needed to be more truthful.

Dougie wanting to play on after the decision (if true) is no longer the club’s concern.

Well the club then doesn’t have a press conference to say he’s retired, I would have that’s pretty easy to understand

Maybe Dougie being a genuine club player, deserved the presser? The club could have easily been seen as cold-hearted if not given Dougie the proper acknowledgement.

It would have been a mutual decision for both club and player to decide “retire” or “delist”/“trade”.

Surely they could have worked out the messaging before the press conference?

Other players have retired and then later decided to play on at another club (Hodge), but for Douglas to immediately come out and say he isn't ready to retire is a backfire on our media people. Just say you're delisting him FFS.

Seriously John?

You don't think the presser should have focused on his career at the Crows finishing and not stating that Douglas had retired altogether?

He hasn't retired if he can find another club.

John sometimes it's best not to comment and for you this is one of those times.

Comprehension not your strongest suit? Thought you were a teacher.

My point is if he wants to play on he clearly hasn’t retired yet. We shouldn’t have announced it for him but said he’s finished with us.

I have no issue him going and if we kept him I would have been spewing.

So you can wipe that egg from your face. Not my problem you can’t understand posts.

I’ve never said anything of the sort and I never actually implied you did this. Yet, here we are

Go back to your cornflakes old man.

All the best in the future Dougy, been a good player for us for many years.
But if you think that you can keep playing at the level required you are dreaming. Couldn't cut it this year. Just enjoy your retirement and don't ruin your reputation

So we won’t allow him to play with us.

He wants to play on.

He had a retirement ceremony and told the playing group he will retire.

Sounds like a forced retirement to me.
It was, on AA dougy said he asked the club if he could go out his own way and not be seen as delisted.

They did the right thing here, Dougy just thinks, like Ben Hart did, he has 1 or 2 years left when he probably doesn't. At AFL level anyway

So now that it’s shown you make stuff up and can’t follow an argument you’ve chosen to try and insult me by calling me old?

What’a wrong with being old by the way?

You sure about that? Because during the same interview he said he’d look at opportunities elsewhere.

He did say he didn’t want a farewell game to take away from Jacobs 200.

Yeah, that's the way I took it, didn't want his 'retirement' to take away from Jacobs 200. To be honest he deserves a send off more than Jacobs deserved a 200 game.

He did say he'd look at other opportunities, my thoughts are that he shouldn't because I can't see who would take him on.

So did he say he didn’t want to be seen to be delisted and was happy for the club to say he had retired? Because that makes his comments about playing on look rather silly given it was only a few hours later.

The way he wanted to go out, is the way he went out. He has retired from the Crows and not delisted.

The Crows made it sound like he has retired from AFL, where as Douglas is open to other opportunities if they arise.

It's a very Adelaide Crows way of doing things. If we were brutal we would have just delisted him.

And isn’t that what the discussion is? Your initial post seemed to suggest Douglas said he was happy for the club to say he had retired.

I don't think it's difficult to get the messaging right though. There's only 3 options on the table, extend, retire, delist. If Dougie intended going public with his desire to play on elsewhere, then he's being delisted, it's just that simple. I'm sure they had more than a couple of minutes to discuss what he was going to do post that press conference.

"Where our list is at and where we think we're going next year, we didn't think Dougie fitted into those plans. There's no doubt that he's still got AFL quality footy in him, he's genuinely deserved his spot in our 22 over the last few weeks. We'll do whatever we can to help him get to where he wants to go."

So would you endorse the club giving him another contract?

How about Mackay?

No and no. Dougie is finished at the highest level and Mackay has been borderline over the last 8 years, being dropped every year for the last 5. At his age and where we're at, he's a complete waste of a list spot. So, when I post how disgusting and short sighted his 1 year extension is, be certain that I'm not trying to have it both ways. I want him gone and I wanted it 3 years ago. We chose him over Hendo, just let that sink in for a few minutes.

He was, he retired from the Crows so he wasn't delisted. What else can you call it?

They should have just delisted him to avoid this kind of rubbish.

Hasn't that been the discussion?
