The circumstances that lead to his death is the worst part.

I hope the son gets life in prison and doesnt get a light sentence due to some faked mental illness.

Just awful. He was a unique character and already making an impact on the footy world in half a season as coach, but his influence in footy extends back 20 odd years over a number of clubs. Not sure how this weekends games are going to play out now but it seems a bit irrelevant really. Tragic for a family to be torn apart like this. RIP

Not the time to talk policy but if drugs were involved in any way I think the new AFL's drug policy is going to be draconian.
Reports in the West say his son is the main suspect, and is undergoing psychiatric assessment - it might be mental illness. I certainly hope this is the case, the alternatives could only result in further pain for his family.

Horrible news to wake up to. RIP

Tragic. I wouldn't be surprised if ice was involved.
I must confess, that I had similar thoughts when I first read about this. Horrible drug. Destroys lives. Had a good mate who was under its sway for a while and it was horrible. Managed to completely turn his life around though.

I was just saying before, I haven't been this saddened and shocked waking up to news like this since the passing of MJ.

This wasn't a loss for Adelaide Crows, was a loss for the entire Football Family.

RIP Phil Walsh

It's great your mate turned his life around – it has to be one of the hardest things to do. This is just speculation of course. The kid could have had a mental illness, or he could have had a temporary psychotic break. I don't think the baying for his blood on the main board is helpful, though.

Im a drug and alcohol counsellor

I have dealt with murders before .....had clients I worked with killed for drug deals gone bad

It's horrible what this stuff does. It's not to totally blame either ...it's the person also ....but have seen drug turn fairly normal people into monsters

I don't want to speculate on phils scenerio as it might not be drug related ...we don't know and let's just reflect the good this man did for footy and people.

Reminds me of that Perth family that got murdered by their son who was a meth user.

I hope he gets life in prison and doesnt get off on mental illness. 2 am returning home on thurs night looks like he was on a binge. Nothing can justify killing his own fanily.

2 am coming home says to me he was just getting started, if this speculation is anywhere near the ball park. I don't agree with you the mental illness part, though. I've nursed a friend back from psychosis and you can't blame them for anything they do when they're ill because they are completely controlled by their impulses that, when they're not ill, are genuinely mortifying to them. It's not so black and white.

I'm dealing with meth users on daily basis

Call me crazy ..some do but its ok, I go to homes of people, speak with the clients and families

It's madness some of the things I see and hear.

Blabbering on a forum and my cycling/kayaking keeps me sane

People ask me why do I do it as I could be doing other things - I have skills and relatively good at it

That said we massively under funded for this problem ......we over worked , too many clients and mountains of paperwork and keeping stats just to justify our jobs to some DH SITTING at desk in Canberra .....

We need more help ..".we are fighting a war with water pistols. That said I don't think it's a war we can win.

The one thing I do want everyone to do ...sorry for this request ....spend time with your kids and teenagers ....

They need your guidance ......be firm, take them camping and spend one to one time with them

Prevention is better than cure ...we must try to stop the next wave of kids trying these drugs ...

Go four days in your job is you can and spend that extra day with your kids ......don't wait till you have a problem

Sorry for banging on, there is a lit we can do to prevent our kids using drugs but it requires time and investment from adults ....call it down payment of you like.

Exactly. This article suggests Walsh may not have always been present as a father: http://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/ad...ows-and-his-life/story-fndv7pj3-1227426471619
That's not to put the blame on him, but it shows that it's not a cut and dried issue. The sins of the father shall be visited on the son, as the saying goes.

The poor bloody players - this would turn their entire season upside down.

I have no idea what the AFL are planning to do, but I'm thinking that cancelling the Adelaide v Geelong game and splitting the points would be the most respectful way forward.

Can't see the Cats players being happy with 4 points if they got them by beating a bunch of guys who were deep in mourning and still going through counseling.

It's scary stuff. It doesn't matter how well you or other people think you bring up your children, the drug just doesn't discriminate.

Having small children, it scares the crap out of me.

The Crows players might also be the most tough and emotionally energized group of sportsmen in the country right now. If they put their hand up to play it could turn into one of the folklore stories of the AFL as Tex and his team honoured their murdered coach with one of their greatest ever wins.

If they are up to it, the AFL said they will wait for Adelaide to make the first move.

What a shock.

I feel for his 22 year old daughter.
She's over in the USA for a summer camp, and she'll be told that her brother has killed her father and stabbed her mother. Truly heartbreaking to think of how she would react.
