Melbourne, one of the more irrelevant clubs in the AFL.
After a strong 2018 they have returned back where they belong, at the lower pole of the ladder.
Gawn is still absolutely beasting it and will be a massive challenge for Kreuzer. We will probably get smoked in this department.
Oliver is still winning lots of the ball but not doing much with it. Viney remains a butcher, Brayshaw isn’t really doing any damage, Jones is nearing the end.
They did beat Fremantle only a week or two ago, which is a decent feat… (And then we went and beat Fremantle in Perth without Cripps and Charlie going down early, lol). Tom McDonald finally found some form as a forward. They seem to be going well against Brisbane as a type this, which is a positive for Demons fans.
The key here will be nullifying the impact of Max Gawn.
Key matchups:
Ruck: Kreuzer vs Gawn
The main battle really. Split this matchup and we essentially win.
Defence:
Weitering vs T. McDonald
Jones vs Weideman
Plowman vs Petracca
We should have the edge here.
Forward:
C. Curnow vs May
Casboult vs Frost
McGovern vs Lever
Don’t know what to expect.
Midfield:
Injury cloud over Cripps and Cuningham makes things difficult to predict here.
Kennedy, E. Curnow, Dow, Walsh, Setterfield, Fisher, O’Brien, Murphy, SPS vs Melbourne’s contingent.
They are more experienced and bigger bodied, but we again are probably more talented.
Overall assessment:
I really can't make any predictions before Russell's injury report. Cripps playing would obviously go a long way towards our hopes of winning. Likewise, the fitness of Cuningham is a significant issue. Harry would be also be a bonus.
Will also add C. Curnow to the uncertain mix. To my eye it doesn't look like a bad medial, perhaps a week or two. Hopeful he'll pull up fine, actually.
Carlton by 4 goals.
