If it's not one of Smith or Shiel's I will be shocked.

Given Smith stood in for Rough this year ahead of Shiel I'm thinking he's first in line, but Pup may get the nod

I’ve always wondered if his comments post that game would cost him. When asked about being captain he said ‘it was no different except you had to do the coin toss’. Possibly this just meant he was doing a fair bit of onfield leadership anyway as VC - just really struck me as a flippant remark to being captain on the day.

Been a good captain, but right time to hand it over. Needs to be burden free for his own game and therefore the team.

I personally don't see any obvious captaincy choice. Mostly due to the fact of it impacting someone's own game.

Cannot by Gunston. Has too much to do. Back, forward and all over the field. Needs to have a clear head.

Smith? Have seen Smith disappear from a bunch of games over the last few years.

Shiels? Maybe. Can see him doing the job, but is he a little too quiet for the job? No idea.

Others...

Mitchell? possibly.
O'Meara? too soon, re: body and consistency
McEvoy? dunno
Stratton? probably not.

I reckon the Jordan Lewis decision was a costly move. Would have been ideal as captain over the last few seasons and the next. Just my two cents.
Which is exactly why Gunston should be caption IMO. Since he covers a lot of the ground and his on field presence would be best suited to the job.

I’m not going to speculate just yet on who I think will be the next captain.
I’d prefer to pour love on Roughead and highlight what a ****ing star he is (not was) on and off the field.
Was a bit of a shock selection for me at the time, but he has carried himself exceptionally well and has been a ****ing champ of a captain.
Timing is right to hand over now, hope he has at least one more great year left in him!

During the game I imagine he's right, never ceases to amaze me how footballers with a sense of humour get underated.
Look at Crawf

Thats my thinking but Smith is 2 mayeb 3 years awya from retiring maybe give it Shiels to make his own for the next 5 odd years

Good job, Rough.

Handled it superbly after having a child and returning from cancer.

I’d be happy with any number of appointments.

Thanks Rough for steering the ship these past two years, you've done a great job :) :thumbsu:

I would opt for Shiels for the next captain but there are plenty who could do the job so won't be cracking it if someone else gets the nod.

IMO it will be Smith. Fits the Hawthorn idea, which I feel Kennett had a big say in.

Elder statesman with only a few years left. 2 yrs in captaincy then passes it on as not to get stale.

Thanks for the service Roughie.. I'm looking forward to you having a solid 2019.
Gunston would make an excellent leader.
