I don't think Brady Grey is even close to being close to the level of player Sherro is at the moment. At WAFL level Grey has often started a game well and then gone completely missing for three quarters in games this year.

Which is to be expected of a first year player. Yet, in saying that he is being named in the "bests" for Peel, has been singled out for individual praise from RTB and earned a place as a travelling emergency last week. So he isn't very far off a debut in the peoples minds who count.

He is the stereotypical Ross Lyon type of player, kinda like Clancee and Dawson.

Just for the record while I cant say Sherro leaves 'every stone unturned', I can say he pushes himself at training as much as any young kid I can remember. Last preseason he was often one of the last to leave the track on a regular bases and after completing goal kicking at the end of the main session he would run a ton of extra laps. His work ethic is actually the main reason I think he will make it. The most likely selection result this week will be no changes with the Peel team not playing for two weeks. Id have Ibbo in the 21 and Sheridan sub.

Again, this kind of endeavour is what is expected, and not what sets him aside.

People are defending him by talking about his work ethic, (which I agree is critical), but what we are not seeing is this transferring into tangible improvements on match day.

He is exactly the same player that we saw last year. People are getting grumpy with me continuing to say it, but I haven't seen a single convincing argument to the contrary.

It was brought up as an example of Sheridan's awesomeness. Maybe someone has a better example?
When you're vanilla you aren't going to have many highlights.

I can't think of a single thing James Kelly has ever done that has made me think "wow" but he's a three time premiership player + 200 gamer.

It wasn't. Somebody highlighted Hilly's goal and somebody else decided that was the opportunity to sink the slipper into Sheridan. I suspect it was probably Bushie.

I don't think anybody is getting grumpy about that at all. People are getting grumpy that you don't seem to be giving the kid a break.

What's so wrong with not showing improvement from the previous year if the previous year was OK for a new player? Sandilands didn't really show us anything for about 6 years, but look where he is now.

Wrong!

...snip...
I challenge anyone to highlight a passage of play at AFL level where an independent judge would say, "holy shit, that Sheridan kid is good".

...snip.

Easy, when Hill kicked the sealer in the Qualifying final against Geelong last year one of our players makes a extended and powerful gut run off halfback which enabled him to be there to force the defender to have to choose between guarding space and closing Hill down. He then dropped in to sheppard Hill's chaser. It might not be a banana on the run from 50 on the boundary but it was damn good footy in a high pressure situation.
He may not be your contested footy cup of tea but he has good skills, a big tank and most importantly knows when to get on his bike. I hope both he and Crozier turn out to be better than average players for someone taken around their position in the draft, at the moment to me from what I have seen it looks like they will both have solid careers. Thats not the same as being below par.

His WAFL from has improved from last year, he has got 22, 32 and 32 possession and 17 from 40% game time. Last year he did not get 30 possession once and he is hitting the score board more.

Once he gets a bit more core strength he will be a very good player in the AFL, he will probably always be vanilla but that is fine.

He won a Rising Star nomination and won Geelong's best first year player, so I can't agree at all.

How can you possibly compare the two?

Put down the metho Reggie.

*sigh*, I'm not talking about WAFL. However, your post backs up mine. For all of his efforts, he can't produce it at AFL level.

yeah, yeah...skinny kid, give him time, my mum loves him yada yada

I have been waiting for Sheridan and Crozier to cement their place in the team, but as an outsider they do not seem any closer to doing so. Both of them seem to be almost guaranteed to wear the Sub vest at some stage every game they play. I notice that both have been playing well for Peel, so they will always be in the mix. How do you compare the two and their development? Is one of them more likely to 'make' it in your eyes, and if so, why?

Impossible to tell at this stage of their development. Crozier is a flashy player who hasn't been able to produce any flashiness at AFL level. Sheridan is an accumulator who hasn't been able to accumulate at AFL level. Both performing very well for Peel but they both need more time, IMO.

But, surely both would necessarily involve a highlight reel more impressive than running near Stephen Hill waving ones arms.
Not really. Rising Star nominations tend to reward possession numbers. Best first year player awards tend to reward number of games played from debut. That doesn't mean the player has a good highlights package.

If you could only pick one to play for Peel given where they are currently at, which one would you choose?

Hard to say from what we've seen.

Sheridan has the work ethic and athleticism, while Crozier has skills and x-factor.

Their development could all depend on our list management and game opportunity by others injured or suspended.

Who ever gets an extended run the AFL rather than the WAFL will get ahead and more likely to be seen as a success.

I reckon both can make it.

Meh. Neither accolades are much chop.

If you consider that Jimmy Bartel, Stevie J, Gablett jnr, Charlie Gardiner (63 games), Henry Playfair (68 games), David Johnson (79) and Andy Carrazzo (168, albeit mainly for Carlton), were all drafted by Geelong in the same year, it is a pretty fair effort.

How many Rising Star noms has Sheridan won again?

That's my point. It's hardly a signifier of top quality winning those awards.

Lee Spurr won Freo's best young player in 2012. Rhys Palmer won the Rising Star in 2008. They're ultimately meaningless awards.

Kelly got 22 touches and a tackle. Rd 12 v Sydney. He obviously won it for more than possession accumulation.

Well, it was you who held up Kelly as a comparison. He showed far, far more at an earlier stage of his career.

Sounds a lot like Garrick Ibbotson's Rising Star nomination

Fremantle haven't had a Rising Star nomination since 2011 - I don't see the big deal.

He'd been given more games in a side going through the process of rebuilding. Sheridan joined a club with a good senior squad aiming to make finals. Different contexts.
