I would of been curious how Alex Pearce would of been in the back line considering he played the 1st half of the WAFL season with Peel in the defensive posts.

I thought Tabs struggled in the backline in the derby. Then again, Freo are trying to make Tabs a forward.

He may have had a couple of moments where he didn't look the best, but NN had 8 handballs and not much else (0 kicks, 0 marks). He did a reasonable job considering he was thrown down there at the last minute with no prep. If he is playing in the back half this week, he's probably had meetings and training sessions with the back line coaches and players and will have a better idea on what do to, where to position himself, a better idea of the rebounding structures etc... I don't think he'll play like a gun defender, but I reckon he might do a bit better this time. Although, I'd again take 0 kicks and marks from his direct opponent and him still look a little shaky down there. I think if Apeness takes off we might see Tabs down back as a more permanent move too.

Macca out and no Silvangi in? :( poor kid...Punctured Lungs/Rib injuries can take ages to heal :-( Worst timing for SNOS...been waiting all year and gets injured 2 straight away.

I think SNOS is in a good position though long term.

I would be absolutely amazed if Macca goes around again.

that would make sense if Tabs played on NikNat the whole game. Which he didn't. He played on McGovern for the most of the game and could easily have had 5 kicked on him.

Agree with this. Silvagni has bided his time and not only that, he has really progressed as a player.
Its easy from the outside to fall into the trap of thinking that Ross didn't rate him but I'm coming to understand that he has very strong ideas about players in their roles and if there is someone better than you he will probably explain that you are 2nd or 3rd in line and in the meantime invite you to develop yourself in the role which it appears Silvagni has done. When he did get a chance this year he looked more confident, particular with the way he was taking the game on and his disposal was excellent.
I was one that was impressed with Silvagni under Harvey and disappointed when he got demoted after the coming of Dawson but I came to understand why Ross relies so heavily on Dawson.
The thing is (to lapse into Ross-Speak) its never as good or as bad as you think. We tend to get these really polarised opinions here where those that remember Silvagni as a decent player are seen to be over stating his abilities while those who didn't have such high opinions are apparently calling him useless. And a usual the truth is somewhere in between. Silvagni is a late bloomer but I think its fair to say that he has shown enough in his couple of outings thus far to say that he is pretty handy at the level. He isn't going to be another McPharlin, but very few are. Luke is one of the greatest athletes to have worn a Freo jumper and a deserving AA CHB.
The good thing is, he does feature in Ross's plans for the future and he seems to be doing the work to make sure he is ready when he gets a chance.
If it appears that I'm eulogising McPharlin, I'm not. I hope he will go around again but as others have mentioned, if your body simply won't let you get on the park there isn't much you can do about it no matter how much you still want to play.

I wouldn't bet the house on Alex Pearce not playing (then again, I'm a renter). Not with Silvagni, Ibbo, McPharlin all unavailable, plus Matty Tabs having struggled in back six, when he played out of position v West Coast. GWS is really tall, especially with Patton, Boyd and McCarthy all up forward.

GWS won't play Boyd, Cameron, Patton & McCarthy all together in a wet (likely) game.
Pearce only returned last week. Tabs will come in.

Yeah I think Silvagni, when he does play, is a superior player to what he was 2-3 years ago.

one thing that RTB did that out other coaches wouldn't is defended him after the loss to Adelaide in 2012. I think that was a big moment for SNOS long term. I get the feeling silvagni is very much a confidence player.

Unlikely to be wet at game time.

Perth area
Mostly sunny morning. Isolated showers in the evening. Winds east to northeasterly 15 to 20 km/h turning northerly during the day.

Watching training it was noticed the amount of one on one training that Alex was doing after the session finished
Kicking to a lead and playing on after a mark and then kicking to a moving target was practised over and over
He has worked hard on losing his mark stop kick game into more of take the game on
With his bravery and improved game skills he deserves some success.

Any media updates on Macca?

"It is understood that Luke McPharlin will undergo surgery to have his calf muscle removed and replaced with elastic bands. The All Australian defender is expected to be available for selection next week." Kim Hackdorn.

I had a look through training reports...was there any warning with McPharlin during the week? He wasn't mentioned as missing at training on the Freo website. I am hoping the club is taking an ultra conservative approach to him.

I wonder with Ibbotson and McPharlin if these are injuries they play through during the game or they occur in recovery. Watching the game I wouldn't have thought there were any issues with those two.
By my reckoning, this is just a politically correct way of saying "we are going to give some of our depth players a run in a relatively nonthreatening game". I don't believe any coach has ever used the expression "rested" and thus they have to say "general soreness" or in this case "calf". I fully expect they will be relatively short term injuries (if you get my drift).

Omitted gets used a bit

Not sure if serious?

What're the chances that Barlow and/or a few others will be late outs, with RTB playing funny buggers as he's done so often in the past?

I don't think RTB will underestimate GWS. They are not the easy beats they once were. It is just that right now you don't know which will show up.

We will spank them and rightly so but there is no chance, not the faintest of chances that Ross is preparing for anything other than out best team and our best footy.

LOL. Someone can't afford to lose Barlow from their Fantasy football team!

For what it's worth, Barlow out is a huge chance. I'd get rid of him from your team and include a likely starter like Wellingham or Monfries.

Very slim chance that an irreplaceable midfielder will be withdrawn, more likely that Pav will withdraw again or Sandi.
