I'm no Tom Bell fan but I thought Bell was far from our worst. Did well when put into the middle. Deserves another crack.
The conundrum with Bell for me is that he seems to be a ‘soft’, 6 foot 2, and 100+ kgs player - for his ‘size’, I’d expect more CP, more CM and more tackles.

On Saturday he had,
  • plus 2 on his average of contested possessions [there were only four Lions who had more]
  • but didn’t lay a tackle.
  • He only takes a few contested marks – has a career TOTAL of only 16 [this is his 7th AFL year] and had none again on Saturday.
  • And frees, for every one he receives he gives more than two away. [rnd 1, didn’t receive any but gave 3 away].
The vexed question is he’s the 10th oldest player on our list yet he falls between Lewis Taylor and Darcy Gardiner with AFL games played. Fagan, now in his second year has around a dozen players out of contract this year, Bell being one of them. Tom would be well aware of the level of expectation being placed on him and Fages would still have the freedom of a long term/big picture frame of mind over the 2018’s WIN/LOSS numbers.

Saturday was only Tom’s 21st senior game at the Lions and only his 7th under Fagan, I’m no coach but I’d be offering Tom a little more time.

Missed the hit. Anything in it ?

Nothing that the Human Rights Commission won’t overturn.

Rangas are very much a marginalised minority’s group.

I don’t think it’s the worst loss. He was poor in both JLT games and his work up forward on Saturday was slow, just wasn’t his usual super aggressive self. Getting reported might suggest his head wasn’t in the right place.

Was a raised elbow/forearm to the head. Ross got up and played out the game but was a poor looking bit of thuggery that I thought Mitch had matured out of.

He was FAR from our worst. He is a loss to our best 22.

I realise that. I don't rate his work as a forward and that's where we've been starting him. I rate him as a pure midfielder, something I assumed we would go with this season. I don't think he did a single good thing against the Saints up forward until he moved into the midfield.

Guess this means Bell gets another crack. Probably plays his best footy at the Gabba anyway. Back him in for 3-4 goals. (not kidding)

Before they iced up Rich's ankle they strapped him up and he had a very short trot around the boundary and he did a small jump to test it and when he landed he hopped again in what appeared a fairly severe pain reaction. Wouldn't have helped those ligaments. He went straight back to the bench and next time I saw him was leaving the ground at half time with the ankle gladwrapped in ice.

Please no Jake Barrett. We have so many better options. He's a very average footballer in my opinion.

Definitely no Rich for a few weeks

Daniel Rich will miss the Brisbane Lions' first home game for the 2018 season, after scans today revealed he has ruptured a ligament at the front of his left ankle.

Rich was injured in the first quarter of the Lions season opener against St Kilda on Saturday night and did not return to the field for the remainder of the match.

The 27-year-old will not require surgery, but he will miss Round 2 against the Melbourne Demons at the Gabba.

He will be assessed on a week by week basis.
