the news had footage of Mcpharlin doing some running, looked gingerly, though that is his normal running, then consulting staff, walk off. So the fact that he tried tends to suggest its as suggested - calf soreness. no risk. these things can linger, given his history. not a good long term sign but i will pray. But the usual pattern of Freo dockers success usually correlates with Luke's fitness

That strapping on McPharlin's calf at training isn't too big, just a little strip horizontally around the bottom of the muscle I see triathletes using when they have a niggle but are still training/competing.

If anyone saw Sloan after their game, THAT is a calf strapping.

I mentioned in another thread that it's around now that the pre-season freshness starts to wear off and here we are (assuming the reports are right of course).

It's well known that the calf muscle complex is particularly prone to strains in older elite endurance athletes in particular. Elvis clearly has issues there. If they don't rest it now, and rest it well, I would bet good money he wont be available or be seriously hampered come finals.

It's interesting that taylor you mention triathletes because that is the exact sport where this issue comes up a lot. Often with compression etc. they play through small tears and the like, but it doesn't get better without rest from the little I know, and with Luke we've just got to be ultra conservative.

So Pav and SonSon being selected the week after a concussion raises eyebrows? Where were they for Luke Parker when he got concussed?

Didn't Nick Lower miss about 4 with concussion. I am sure the medical staff aren't taking chances. Having had a few concussions I know that it's obvious if your still suffering.

I can't remember ever seeing A.Pearce play, really looking forward to seeing how the young lad performs. If he can keep Daniher to 2-3 gls I'll be stoked.

I always thought Mcfarlin playing on, was on the condition he only plays 15 games this season. The guy needs to be managed, was shocked to hear Ross say we will look at it half way mark.

Freo been so specific with 'calf' is worrying imo

I'm super super excited to see A Pearce in the mix! It's perfect timing to give him a run, and sounds like he's been working his butt off at Peel all year to get given the chance.

McPharlin out doesn't surprise me at all. Ross mentioned in some presser earlier in the week that they'd keep an eye on the KPD's because they played most of the game once we lost 1/2 our bench. If Elvis is sore at all I'm glad they're resting him.

Just when it couldn't get any better, we start blooding the new generation. Stoked with our new piercing :)

They've kept Smith out for a few weeks with concussion (or so they say) and he's playing WAFL. I highly doubt they'd be that cautious with Smith and reckless with Pav and Walters.

How exciting would it be for him?
First AFL game in front of a Freo home crowd, in a team that is sitting on top of the league.
How proud would his family and friends be.

As with all injuries, concussions come in degrees. From being 100% the next day, to having extremely severe post-concussion symptoms that carry on for multiple years.

Looking forward to A Pearce's debut being whitewashed from the next article about RTB 'not playing youf'!

I wouldn't get too excited. He's only got a game because our first 3 choices of key defender are all injured.

Hopefully Alex P grabs this opportunity with both hands. In all likelihood he'll either be dropped next week for McPharlin or Dawson, so the onus is on him to convince the match committee not to.

I think Lower had history with a lot of concussions and probably depends on severity as well...

PS

@changes: Not what I expected but good to see A.Pearce getting a game.

Some concern for Luke, but seems like an ideal scenario for Alex to make his debut. Zac should be ready to return in a couple of weeks either way. It's not easy to break into our team, so exciting times for the young fella.

Speaking of which, Zac Dawson looks to be moving smoothly at training and has been in the main group two weeks now.

He can't be far off. We're obviously getting him cherry ripe with his fitness. He wouldn't be an easy player to sub out if he blows up.

Don't think McPharlin would play next week even if fit as we are playing the bullies at Edihad which is the hardest ground and Dawson is not ready.

Think A Pearce is getting two games in a row no matter what which is probably a good thing. I was really wanting Alex to get an opportunity to boost our key position stocks.

Hope McPharlin's calf is at the most minor level.

Sorry late jump in the thread... Has freo come out and all and said Macca has re-injured his calf? or are we just 'managing' him?

Was there anything from the training reports to see this coming?
