We need a 2nd ruck, no two ways about it, so you'd think Lynch is a certainty given we don't lose any picks. But Jolly is also gone in two years so we also need a 1st ruck.

In other words, we need both a Lynch and a Giles. The question then becomes how do we pay 300k or so to land each? Collingwood has had a deal on the table for 3 months for Wellingham and nothing has changed. That would certainly get the cap aspect sorted I would think and a WC pick would be pretty close to getting Giles.

If Jolly goes down with a season ending knee injury during pre season or the start of the home and away season, this is a masterstroke.

giles is no superstar, just because people made money on him in supercoach they think he's a gun
the above could apply (ie: jolly gets injured) and we just keep wood on minimum money and he do the job and we deploy our picks elsewhere.
need to look at the opportunity cost of getting giles
he will cost picks and dollars, both can be used elsewhere
I dont rate wood, but id rather keep him on the cheap than spend draft picks and dollars that can be used elsewhere to get giles.
Plus i've heard we are not interested in Giles.

Most top clubs don't have heaps of pace on the outside. Hawks have Rioli, Sydney Jetta, Crows Dangerfield. Daisy is pretty nippy when fit.

I think the important thing is to win the ball in the middle and to kick well. A great ruck will really complement our strengths. Jolly is a manful ruck, but he can't leap anymore. A Giles could be like a Jacobs or Maric to our team.

We could move Goldsack back to the backline, have Lynch be used in that third forward/second ruck role and then have Dawes and Cloke as the two stationary targets up forward. We don't lose much up forward while we gather some speed off half back.

Yes, and with Goldsack/Keefe doing the kick ins from fullback. Shaw and O'brien both woeful at kick ins..Collingwood ranked 16 in the league. We must improve in this area next year.

Pies trade pick 17 and a player or pick 17,18 for caddy. Seedsman takes wellinghams role. Rivers as a 3rd man down back. Lynch as 3rd tall, back up ruck.
That gets pies to the top of the pecking order again I believe.

He's not the best ruck going around, but he's certainly someone who can play the position and is attainable with our picks and wage constraints. He kicks almost a goal a game, 22 hit-outs and 4 marks. Can't see us landing anything better and at 24 think he has some scope. At worst an upgraded stop-gap who wont cost too much more than Wood and bridges to Witts. At best could be on the bottom of a J-curve and about to take off for reasonable cost.

Any way you dice it, we need a 1st ruck in the next year. Given people don't want to break up the band, who else can we realistically get with our picks and caps to fill that gaping hole?

And on opportunity costs, well, taking experienced rucks every couple of years is a far greater burden than using this 1st round pick on Giles who I think (combined with Witts) will give us 6-10 years of not using 1st picks on ruckmen.

Lynch Fills the void that L.Brown left. Dawes plays at FF like he did in 2010/2011. Giles/Clarke come in to replace Jolly if he is injured or retires.

Lynhc will cost us nothing and if Wellingham goes then Giles/Clarke takes his wage (300k).

Seedsman is the sort of player we need to fast track. He has all the tools and is exactly the sort of player we lacked this year. Just needs size and experience.

Not sold on Rivers as a need. Though will be a quality acquisition for someone. With Reid, Brown and Keeffe + Maxwell we already have plenty of flexibility in our talls.

Giles is getting seriously pumped up. Understand if jolly goes down you will be in strife but some faith in witts and par-timers is needed.

Lynch, Caddy should be priorities. Surely wellingham for pick 17, pies trade that pick + player or their first pick and 17 for caddy - surely that gets that done

I see your point but you need to look further than next year, like when Jolly retires. Wood is likely to be delisted.
