Coach Rutten sacked - no, really this time. Could the Dodo face extinction too? 🙏🙏

If I'm Clarko I'm not trying to prove anything. Otherwise Essendon would probably be his choice. Having done it all the fairy tale coaching gig at North is the obvious choice. If he was to drag them back up the ladder a bit in the next few years it would complete his legacy.

And I think Clarko has some moral fibre. Not sure he'd be a big fan of Rutten being booted with a game to go. And why would Essendon bother punting Rutten now if Clarko was in the can? What's a week gonna do.?

Going by their s**t season, I don't think it's good?

Midfield is the issue, every week it's Merrett basically. No one cares that Parish gets it 35 times he butchers half of them. Every pick in this upcoming draft HAS to be a genuine mid and not a flanker wannabe mid.

But their past always repeats itself. They'll grab some kid 185cm 76kg half back or half forward who basically is afraid of the dark. Death taxes and this

Yep played really well against Sydney, I'm not completely across your defenders in your list aside from Ridley who is a jet.
D'Ambrosio is 5 games in, but he's another good one

Ridley, Zerk, Redman, McGrath -> where you start to build
I'd like a leader back there.....someone like Lloyd tbh.
D'Ambrosio + proper tall lock down Talia-style defender.

Fair I guess. Had you coming 11th, so it's not as if you are too much behind what I expected. Nowadays you live and die so to speak with your midfield if there isn't 4-5 A graders in there you aren't going to be consistent, Essendon have 1- Merett. That is it! That to me tells that it's the list that's the issue not the coach. It might be the coach as well but he isn't been given much in terms of a balanced list.
yeah. Our midfield is off.
We have 2. Shiel and Merrett. The rest are kids. I suspect Parish won't be on our list in 2024. We either trade him now or let him walk and bank a band 1 post-2023.

We need 2-3 mids to come in whilst Hobbs, Caldwell, etc develop.

Yep been happing all too often Dodoro has had this fascination with flankers. There's a role for them but you don't need half your list being one.

Yeah there is a few defenders, I hope they continue to play McGrath in defence, he isn't a mid. Yes he isn't the mid you wanted at pick 1, but Hodge had a fantastic career playing that Quarterback role. McGrath can do that. Feel he's been stuffed around a lot. You need a leader, ideally actually a genuine key. Laverde too often is being asked to play too tall, he's actually been decent but it's asking a lot. You know who Essendon should go for, Matt Crouch, just for a couple of years get another genuine mid in while these youngsters develop. He'd be pretty good in the meantime and would cost a packet of chips.

True but you are kidding if North isn't taking 4-5 years at a minimum to even be near the 8. It has holes on a lot of lines.
North won’t take that long if they find a coach and a recruiting team willing to go after and land experience.

They have 3 ready to go key talls in Larkey, McKay and Xerri. They can field a competitive tall group by bringing in experience. Or even just getting more out of Corr and CCJ by having a proper coach.

And most of their midfield have now done multiple preseasons and can improve quickly. JHF and the number 2 pick should be just about their only real kids in their best 22 next year if they get it right. Guys like Curtis, Powell, Phillips can all push for games without being relied on to be ready to go.

If they follow the Brisbane under Fagan (and ironically Noble) model of identifying and landing some quality experience they’ll improve quickly.

Essendon have a quicker path to finals and a decent list to mould. But it’s not a clear cut choice unless Clarko’s plan is to be in and out in under 5 years. I’d probably base my decision on the board, the CEO and the footy staff rather than the list.

You can read a lot into how far Essendon have slipped by the players their fans rate:

Stringer - "The Package" is horribly overrated. Can not maintain a AFL-fit body. Prefers to carry himself in a shape thats conducive to injury. Has a lovely highlights package but has just as great a lowlights package when he can go missing.

Draper - Yes, good for a hit-out, but also guaranteed to be the tallest witches hat on the park when the ball is going the other way. If you were tasked with putting together a highlights package of his defensive acts you'd be in big trouble. Has very very limited agility. Cannot bend over for ground balls. Would be the equivalent of Xerri, Flynn, Meek, Ladhams for output yet Ess fans believe he's a Top 10 ruckman.

Perkins - A top 10 mid who has averaged 12.5 touches a game in his second year. Flying under the radar with Cox/Reid out but I would be more concerned by him than those two. Players like Max Holmes are starting to go past him now. He should be flying the flag more than he has but their supporters happy to still consider him a project.

Mind you we also play Sydney (currently 2nd), Brisbane (4th), Collingwood (5th and equal in wins with 2nd), Richmond (7th) and Port (11th) twice. That’s the most difficult fixture in the competition for a side that at times fielded the least experienced side in the competition this year. It’s pathetic.
Damn that is ridiculous for double up games

The only thing Rutton did wrong was way over achieve last year

According to many it was done.
With him to announce this week.

If we have dealt exclusively with Clarko and wasted time only to be strung along again we deserve to cop it.
Lockett was 99 percent done at Tigerland until the AFL poached him to Sydney.

I'd be surprised if even 1% of Essendon supporters have those three viewpoints.
