Mitchell told the players and coaches he was leaving at 3/4 time during the Saints game.

Explains the malaise over the following few matches

What a stupid time to break the news! I remember we fell to shit in that last quarter too. Poor form all around smitch.

As he still has two years to run on a contract do we receive any kind of compensation for loosing him? Will his new club have to pay us out his remaining two years?

Thanks for your contribution Sammy.

Why would they pay us out? We won't be paying him for those last 2 years. We won't be financially worse off, other than expenses to recruit a replacement.

Its not his new club breaking contract, it's SM.

Ok Sam was great for our club ....what he’s taught yeo...Shuey...sheed and co stays with us

Those guys now have that knowledge so all good ....we just need to stay calm ...thank Sam

Find another replacement ....simmo has plenty of networks I’m sure

Probably the advantage was mitchel played with the team for a year ....

But he’s not the messiah ok.....just need be aware if that

Why couldn't we offer him a Melbourne-based position? :(
No point really. Only really want him as a coach and he’s not going to be able to do that very well from the other side of the country. No need to make it more complicated, assistant coaches change all the time, just find someone else to replace him and move on I think. He was great for us and hopefully leaves the midfield permanently improved.

The rumour that he fell out with Simmo doesn't surprise me if that's his caper. First-class flog.

What exactly is the point of contracts for coaches?

Mitchell stuck out two years of four and helped us win a flag so I'm happy for him to leave if his family are unhappy here, but if he can just up and leave and join another team it kind of makes a mockery of a 4 year contract. If we fired him we'd have to pay out two years, but if he walks our only recourse is to be dicks. Weird.

Not that it really matters as we are hardly a cash strapped Club , but we will receive some coin from Hawthorn due to Mitchell's breach of contract and Sam then working at Hawthorn.

As per the AFL site a quote from Hawthorn'

" Nothing can be official until a release is documented and we will work through that with West Coast and they're are well aware of that . "

Hawks will need to compensate us financially in order for the move to be signed off.

The system has been put in place with Port getting financial compensation from St Kilda when Richardson was poached and Collingwood like wise when Eade went to the Suns.

There is no doubt there is an issue with coaches and players wanting long contracts for security and then being somewhat free to break them at will, which the AFL needs to look into more closely, but at the end of the day, things change. I am sure Sam came to the club with the best of intentions, gave it his all and for family (and/or other) reasons it hasn't worked.

There is no point forcing him to stay or creating a meaningless job in Melbourne that serves no purpose for us, just to keep him. Hopefully West Coast receive something from Hawks to make it harder for coaches/players to be poached but I have no issue at all with him leaving and going to Hawks. Once he decided he was leaving for what appear to be legitimate reasons, it made sense he would end up back at the Hawks. I doubt there was some master plan in the works from the beginning as some seem to suggest.

He helped us win a flag. I am happy enough with that.

I was well peeved when this came out originally, especially after the Ratten leaving Hawthorn news had come out not long before than. All the stars aligned for Hawthorn to appoint Sam as an assistant to Clarko and this is pretty much set to happen, especially if you take anything the interview that Mitchell's manager did on trade radio. I think the decision may have already been made official in the last 24 hours, if not very soon.

After the result last weekend I'm now satisifed with it as he has been an integral on and off field part to the club's 4th premiership. If we had of gone out with a close prelim or GF loss than I'd probably still be bitter about him leaving 2 years into a 4 year deal knowing we were around the mark/ in a premiership window.

Don't think his value can be underrated to the premiership as Simpson's midfield/ stoppage offsider. His experience as a player in finals no doubt assisted the group.

At the end of the day I don't think we can say anything more than thanks for being an intgral part of the 4th flag and no doubt we will see him as a senior coach post Clarkson.

Ideal situation would've been Jarrod Schofield in, Sam Mitchell out but that's not going to happen. Interested to see who they replace Sam with or just shuffle the current deck chairs with maybe Van Berlo stepping up from development.

You can't understate the importance of an elite midfield coach

Don Pyke got us to a grand final

Sam Mitchell helped us win a grand final

It will be very interesting to see who gets the job next

It's been a good 2 years. He helped us win a flag, but unfortunately it hasn't worked out in the long run. Oh well, I'm sure the lessons he has taught the midfield group won't soon be forgotten.

Cheers Mitchy.

Disappointed to see Sammy go, but winning the Flag makes everything feel better.

Coaching structure next year will be very interesting, especially if we add our stand alone team in the WAFL.

Basically need to add 2 new names to the list.

Does Ezy want a job after retirement? Plenty of jobs for the boys already.
