You can't help but be impressed with him.

Ignore his 1 AFL game, where he didn't get a go.

He's been a consistently excellent performer in a side, that it would be fair to say have struggled. Really struggled.

Constant 25-30 possesion games. Generally chipping in with goals. Even kicked a bag of 4 IIRC.

Shows great character, and I think long term, he'll be a really good player for us.

At Prospect today, Gill was the match winner. He killed the Eagles in the 2nd half who had young state under 18 player Matthew Broadbent on him in the 3rd and then Luke Jarrad on him in the last quarter. It was back to the Gill of old and the first time I've seen his leap, strong hands and attacking flair back this year.

McGregor was injured and tried to go back on, but was ineffective when he was out there. Petrenko did some good things from the back line, but not up to the standard he had been playing. Was moved in to the middle towards the end of the game.

I don't take much notice of the opposition, but Gallman seemed to be pretty sure in everything he did and was part of a Roosters defence that didn't give the Eagles a sniff.

Yeh Petrenko started off very well, having about 6 or 7 possession in the opening term but he probably only finished with about a dozen touches. And as for Gallman, there's no way he should be on our list next year. Just an average SANFL player, can't see any AFL potential in him.

Based on what I have read over here in Perth it would be hard to ignore Gill next week. Walker seemed to do very little in the second half for Norwood, was it lack of ball into the forward 50 or just fading out of the game, maybe this is what the club is trying to get out of him.

Glad to Sellar performing, amazing that he gets plenty of touches and a few goals when not on the bench most of the match. Needs to be in a different club though as Glenelg Reserves will play him as a ruck but he needs to develop his CHF role.

Rest seemed quiet apart from Otten doing the normal stuff, play him Craig and put him at HF flank for an entire match

I saw three Crows players in action today. Ed Curnow and James Sellar for the Glenelg reserves and Andy Otten in South's league team.

League Game:

1st Quarter:
Otten was positioned at half forward and had Rudolph from Glenelg playing on him for the first part of the term.

Not too long later former Crows' rookie Brad Sugars was placed on him. Otten eventually got into the game, taking a sliding mark just outside the 50 on the boundary, one on one with Sugars. Another former Crow, this time, Jon Hinge, was moved onto him as Otten appeared to move into full forward. He got a great snap at goal, coming after he shook off a tackler from 40m out. Nearing he end of the quarter he received a free for in the back and had a set shot, but unfortunately missed. He gathered 3 kicks and 3 handballs for the first term.

2nd Quarter:
Otten was back at half forward and on Sugars.

What impressed me in this quarter was a quick piece of play, where Otten ran after the ball, was able to gather it off the ground and evade a number of Glenelg players before he eventually got a kick away. He almost scored his second goal for the game shortly after, when he took a long shot form outside 50, but the ball was just marked on the goal line. About half way through the quarter he was moved into the centre of the ground and onto another former Crow in Matthew Bode (who stands at 175cm compared to Otten at 190cm). By the end of the term he had 3 kicks and 2 handballs.

3rd Quarter:
Otten again started in the forward line on Sugars. Although shortly after the term started he was moved down back onto Hinge and then onto some fellow called Block.

Like last term, there was a bit of play which stood out. Otten was able to lay a tackle on the ball carrier who subsequently spilled the ball, which Otten then gathered, went for a bit of a dash before kicking long to a player at centre half forward. He kept running and received the ball just outside 50 before delivering it long into the attacking third of the ground. He was then moved into the centre of the ground, probably around 10 minutes into play. His present was immediately felt as he managed to get a clearance away at the centre bounce. For the rest of the quarter he looked pretty knackered, but still got involved, including a long shot at goal for another point. This quarter was his best, as he found the ball with 6 kicks and 1 handball.

Total Stats: (For the three quarters I was able to see)

Otten: 12 kicks, 6 handballs, 3 marks, 4 tackles, 1 goal, 2 behinds.

The first thing I noticed about Otten is you can see he enjoys playing for South. He was quite vocal on the ground, giving directions, congratulating players for goals etc. It was great to see such enthusiasm from a Victorian recruit.

The first, and only other time, I've seen Otten play this year was in a pre- season game (which was his first for South). Its evident that the handful of months under his belt at an AFL Club have improved his game. He was anticipating play more and becoming involved more instead of just waiting for the ball to get to him. He could still do a bit more, given the talent he's got, but it was wonderful to see an improvement.

I believe it is essential that the Crows move Sellar to another SANFL club next year that needs a CHF so as he can be a more regular target than what he had this year on and off the bench and now in reserves. I am positive he will make it but this will help speed up the process as he will gain the confidence he has been lacking.

IMO come finals all clubs will be looking over their shoulders at the dogs

the Dogs have only played in patches all year and will still finishes with the double chance, the last term against Norwood showed the dogs still have the ability, the hunger will be escalated come Sept

I am confident when I say that the Dogs have not got out of 2nd gear all year and we have that extra gears to go to in our game, however, my question is can we say the same for the other clubs

The Dogs are the Premiers, they have the proven big game players, and they will play their best footy for 2008 in Sept, any club that wins the premiership will need to beat the Dogs in Sept

Once again thanks Crow*Girl for yet another outstanding piece of work

One thing that I noticed in that clip is that Sellar had a few kicks around his body which is something that I hope doesn't happen often. That sort of thing will never translate to AFL footy as there is more emphasis on precise delivery and hitting targets.

Let's wait and see what comings and goings take place at Glenelg in the off season before we start talking about shifting a home grown player from the club where he's played all his junior footy

Cheers for that footage CrowGirl Really gives some perspective on Sellars performance in the 2s. Seriously, how could of he not won the taps against the lad Souths reserves had rucking? Ive always thought Sellar looks like the kind of player who was the biggest kid in the team in junior football who struggles when the other kids grow up and playing in that comp will not help him one bit, nor will sitting on the bench in the league side. Move to South Jimmy!

Will Sellar make it as a forward in the AFL? I don 't know. Maybe as a FF, but IMO not a CHF. Looks a very natural ruckman. Thanks for the vid Crows girl btw. He looks like he dominated in the ruck... has a natural leap and times his jump perfectly. Looks to have grown quite a bit as well. Is it time to develop him into a ruckman? Sure we have quite a few ruck options but I seriously don't think Sellar is going to be a forward. Ruck looks like his natural position and his "lack of intensity" may be due to him being used to being a ruckman. He did a lot of standing around, and he looks best in the roaming around the ground role which Dead Cox plays.

He will never be a full time ruckman at AFL level. He is not tall enough and no where near athletic enough to make up for his lack of height like Jeff White.

If he was 199 cm + then yes and he could easily be the best ruck prospect we would have but at 195 cm his only chance at making it at the next level is as a KPP at either end of the ground.

Thats why I am not happy that Sellar is playing a lot of his footy in the SANFL as a ruckman. He needs to learn a new position and develop as a KPP. Playing him in the ruck just doesn't do anything for his long term AFL development. He will never be a ruckman in the AFL. He could be a KPP that could pinch hit in the ruck (like Kenny McGregor) but he is not a genuine ruckman at the next level.

Spot on I'd even go as far to say he's a better ruckman than Maric, as he has much better timing. But then again, it was only the South reserves who are on the bottom of the reserves ladder...

I heard he's 198cm? 1cm behind Maric.... I think Height is sort of overated. Yes, against Sandilands he'll probably struggle (every ruck in the comp does) but he'll be a massive asset around the ground. Massive. I was watching the Hawks v Saints last night and they put Jason Blake in the ruck. Blake is only 191cm or something like that. He dominated the Hawks ruck combo. He kicked 3 goals in 10 minutes and won most ruck taps as well which led to St Kilda dominating the clearances. I reckon Sellar could hold his own at AFL level. He has a good leap (was top 10 in draft camp I think?) and compared to other ruckman he'd be more athletic than them. He could run the ruckman off their legs and pick up possies around the ground, pushing forward whenever possible. He seriously looks much more comfortable rucking... I think he'll only ever be a part time forward, if we don't have any more options we'll swing him up there to see if he can make an impact.

Sellar seems to me as one of those blokes where he's not mobile enough to be a full time forward, while also too in between-ish to be a ruck. However, height isn't overly important if you can play the position well. Height is only a number. If you were 185cm and dominating as a ruck who cares? Maybe in the NAB cup we can experiment a bit and try him as a ruckman, cause I reckon he could be a great asset there. Looks much more confident there.

Even at SANFL level he has seemed more comfortable in the ruck hasn't he? (Hard to judge though as he seems to be on the bench all the time). Sure the opposition looked pretty crap but it doesn't take away the fact that he is a natural in the ruck. Palms the ball down at the peak of his leap. Perfect timing.
