Well very contrasting performances tonight.

Kris Massie was the best of the four Crow players on display tonight as he once again put in a great four quarter performance for the Legs. He had a lot of possessions and his courage on a number of occasions was brilliant. Many times he ran back with eyes only on the ball and took the mark. Not much more needs to be said about this ultra consistent player. If there’s an injury to anyone in the Crows 22 he should be first in line to be recalled. But I’m more than happy for him to stay with the Legs.

Bryce Campbell was a little down on previous efforts. He played mainly across the forward line which is a little confusing to me, and when he moved into the midfield in the third quarter he was a lot more damaging. His tackling was again a feature, as was his attack on the ball. Whenever he did have the ball his delivery was immaculate as usual and I’m pretty sure he kicked a goal in the opening term. I’d like to see him play more in the midfield though.

I’m afraid to say that Richard Douglas was very ordinary. He played across the HFF for pretty much the entire game, and his first half opponent was Nitschke. He beat Douglas in 1-on-1 contests and Douglas found it very tough to get a possession. His opponent in the second half was Matthew Brunoli, a 175cm speedster who normally plays in the forward line. Douglas was beaten hands down and he really found it tough. I know people will have a crack at me but I have some serious question marks over his game. He is slow, very slow. Brunoli was far too quick for him and out rain him on numerous occasions. Douglas’s disposal was also very iffy, a few of his kicks were complete shockers and a few of his handballs put teammates under pressure, something which is becoming a frequent occurrence. He won very little of the ball but when he did he wasn’t damaging, and both of his direct opponents had the better of him. His speed and size are of major concern.

John Hinge was very, very impressive. He played on Jesse Aish and it was the contest of the night in my view. Aish was threatening up forward, and Hinge was good across half back and through the midfield. After a somewhat slow start, Hinge was especially prominent after half time and would’ve finished with around 20 possessions. His disposal was very sharp, especially the 50 metre kick off one step to a leading forward who didn’t break stride in the last term. He looked good down back and won a few clearances when in the midfield. Hinge is a promising player who has the build to be an AFL regular.

I (stupidly) earmarked him for a big performance when I should have been more mindful of the situation. He has come back from a hamstring issue, which can be tough at times to overcome mentally. I know for a fact that Douglas is not slow, he manages sub-3 seconds in the 20 metre sprint. It sounds very much like he doesn't trust the hammy enough to go flat out with it. There is no reason to be concerned by this, give him a bit of time and he'll get some confidence and form back.

In summary the signs sound okay overall; don't worry about Dougie too much. Young players will experience rough patches and it's a matter of getting through it to regain confidence. It doesn't sound like him to be getting comprehensively beaten (assuming you have been objective with your appraisal Drummond :p) especially for leg speed which is in his case at a level where he should not be getting blown out of the water. Hamstring could well be playing on the mind, but still a little disappointing. :/
To blame his speed on previous hamstring injuries is a little simplistic IMO. The bottom line is he wouldn’t have played if he wasn’t 100%. He only had hamstring soreness and if Glenelg had played last week who knows, he might have played. Remember Hinge has only returned from a hamstring injury himself and he was flat out tonight and looked as sharp as ever.

I find it hard to believe he went sub 3 seconds, but regardless, I don’t think he’s all that fast. Have you ever seen him actually burn off the opposition? Tonight he tried to keep up with Brunoli and he just couldn’t do it. He’s reasonably slow and at that height and with that build, he’s got a bit of work in front of him. A heck of a lot of work to be done, and I know a lot of people are convinced about him, but at this stage I’m not.

He rated in the top 10 or 15% in the draft for leg speed, and yes I've seen him burn the opposition off a few times (though only once at AFL level - burst away from Travis Johnstone in round 22 last year to boot that goal from 50). Also, each player will react differently to different injuries, and the nature of the hamstring problem from player to player can differ too if that makes sense. Regardless, I KNOW Douglas is quick hence when I hear that he was easily outdone for pace it makes me think something isn't right.

EDIT: Just discovered something very intriguing. Marc Murphy clocked 3 seconds flat in his 20m sprint. Work that one out. :o
I find those results staggering. More than once tonight he was involved in a foot race and he came away second best each time. Maybe he’s quick off the mark but can’t sustain the pace over longer distances?

Anyway back to his football ability, he was disappointing tonight. He really needs to work on his decision making and not giving a handball off to a teammate under pressure. In the last quarter he had the ball, handballed back to a teammate who soon got tackled, the ball spilt loose and Norwood ran it down the field and kicked a goal. He had no impact playing up forward, and nor did he have an impact when he pushed up the ground.

Need to bulk up a fair bit more, if it's possible, and work on the things I mentioned above.

I finally found some info - his leg speed, endurance and agility were all in the top 15% at the draft camp, with the agility in the top 10%. This was the same draft that saw Murphy, Dale Thomas, Varcoe etc so there was some good competition there. So in terms of the benchmarks he's very, very good.

He has received such wraps throughout his junior career and has impressed a hell of a lot of people up to now with his SANFL and AFL (in patches) footy. Disappointing tonight no doubt, but like Knights, I am confident the potential is there. :thumbsu:
Based on what exactly, a few draft camp results? Tom Rischbieth would’ve been the first taken in last years draft had draft camps been the be all and end all.

Let’s have a look at his supposed strengths from junior footy:

• Ability to win the contested ball. Too thin to play in the midfield at this stage.
• Footy smarts. Decision making is one of my main queries.
• Overhead marking. No signs of this, at his height we might not.
• Foot skills. Sometimes they’re on display for all to see, other times certainly not. But his skills are generally impressive.

Being a gun junior is all well and good, but his strengths aren’t exactly coming to the forefront.

But he's had a couple of mediocre games this season, so surely we're going to delist him. If he can't make it happen after 30 senior games, then clearly he's never going to.

Dude he's been on the list for less than 18 months, he's what 19 or 20 years of age. SANFL last year he was fantastic, so good that he could break into Adelaide's starting 22, all be it helped along due to injuries. At the start of the season he was still there, with almost a full strength squad (for the positions he plays). Alright, his season hasn't been stellar, but FFS he's played all of 10 or 12 games. He's dropped out of the Adelaide team due to an injury and he has played one game back. Looks to me that you are just looking to find any fault possible because he's not wearing the blue and red piece of shit.

I don't expect Dougie to be tearing the league up in 5 weeks time, I expect him to be doing so in 5 years time, look how long we persevered with Knighta, and look at the results. He's still teething a little bit, but has been utterly fantastic this year. Thats were I see Dougie next year. So seriously get off the kids back, if he's performing like this in 3 months, then complain but FFS not after 1 week.

People ......the term "Second Year Blues" has been around since time in memorium ....and for very good reason.

Douglas IMO is suffering from this ......

Drummond is right ....he has been unimpressive this year overall ....but the club is getting games into him knowing he'll be a good player in time.

Douglas is quick ....but hasn't the confidence this year or injury concerns have him operating at 3/4 pace.

His disposals this year have been very average ....missing targets ...wrong options ....last season, his first didn't see much evidence of this ......so it appears these are simply symptoms of "second Year Blues"

He will be a good player ....he will be disappointed in his form .....

That’s a bit uncalled for.

I have some legitimate concerns about Douglas, and yet I’m not allowed to even question him at all because the general consensus is that he’ll become a quality player? I believe the doubts I have raised about him are valid, I hope I’m wrong but I’m entitled to express them.

What are you doing Drummond.

You seem to be working your way through the list putting down any youngster not wearing the red and blue.

Time to give it a spell I think.

So you conveniently missed the part where I said I thought Hinge was very impressive?

If North had kicked straight today it would have been a record winning margin. It was an absolute flogging today, the Roosters gave Port a much needed bath.

Gallman was very impressive, he is a promising young man.

Gill took grab after grab, missed a few shots but everyone did today. He is an absolute ****ing gun, a superstar.

Ladhams was the only one who could kick straight, carved the Port defence to pieces and had a day out but Alleway was our BOG by quite a bit, possibly followed by young Timmy Delvins who came into the side today. He has sublime skills and a cool head in traffic.

**** what a great win.

Much needed indeed. They do have a certain odour to them.

He certainly is

How many goals did Gill kick RoosterLad?

I think it was about 1.5 or something, Alleway would have kicked 2.7 as well. Terrible kicking for goal by North today.

Gill took grab after grab though, he has one of the best pair of hands you will ever see, all one grab stuff. In the first term he took one on his chest running back into the pack.. I wouldn't mind if the Crows didn't pick him all year so he can run around in the V.

Obviously McGregor would be in the box seat to come in for Perrie this week but do you rate Gill any sort of outside chance?

He is in good form but McGregor has played more footy this year and would be the best man to bring in, what happened to the Sarge?

Oh and Wundke fans, he was superb today, took some strong grabs but his normally reliable kicking didn't happen today. He did chase hard though and it was an impressive debut, kicked a couple of goals I think and should play next week against the Gays.

Alleway kicked 5 (and about 5-8 behinds as well). Gill kicked a couple I think and took a couple of screamers.

RoosterLad is right, had North kicked straight it would have been the biggest loss seen in years. Should have won by 150 points.
