Not to make too long a point of it but religion outside of any existence of a deity being tried and tested is accurate, populations only take it on when it offers a value over what they already have - obvious caveats about pain of death - and where those existing have had to adapt to suit the competition.Basically tried to say "religions were tried and tested" while "cults were made up by man"; well pretty much all religions came about by one person saying "god told me that this is the right way to do things"
The religion is separate from the belief the longer it goes on, if you consider the foundation belief structure as the true version then what we have today is nothing like it - in any group, even Amish.
The religion had to bend and flex as it went from cult to religion. You don't need to afford any extra value to the word religion over cult.
Long story short: religion is a cult that offered enough to the people to be heard then was able to morph itself to suit their needs
