Hallelujuh!

Self-serve checkouts have made grocery shopping at supermarkets far more quicker and convenient for the consumer. I'm surprised to see that some people opt to use regular checkouts. Perhaps they find them too impersonal or simply aren't able to use them efficiently.

The supermarket chains must be glad. More checkouts, fewer time taken by consumers and fewer employees on the payroll.

Thoughts?

Best thing ever. For me, not the unemployment rate.

Thumbs down from me. Supermarkets and petrol stations are just the beginning. Soon we'll have self-serve check-outs everywhere and more people becoming redundant. Soon the problem will spread elsewhere, machines will take over everywhere. Goodnight sweet human world.

As a single person with only a small amount of groceries they are excellent. Don't see people with huge amounts going through them here either.

No complaints about the packing of bags either.

They're great if you haven't got too many items.

Not so good if you have a trolley full and it shits when people go through with one as it holds up everyone and defeats the purpose of having a self checkout.

What is with this line of thinking? Oh no technology stole my shit-house job! Sure it sucks money wise for the poor people who have these mundane jobs but if you think about it, it's ridiculous to complain about technology making life easier/better. Higher education should be pursued by these people pushing the human race into ever higher planes of existence and harmony!!!!!1

Saves the awkwardness of buying condoms and lubricant.

But yes- they are pretty convenient if you've just run in for a few items. I wouldn't sit there with a trolleyful though.

No complaints about the packing of bags either.

I've tried using them a few times when they first appeared, always annoyed the hell out of me when it asked me to "place the item in the bag" when i didn't want or need a bag .

I have only used self serve checkout a few times since, and even then it was because the staff monitoring the store, dragged me through kicking and screaming (aka: they still scanned it in and all that stuff for me :p). I've since refused to use it - i don't care if i only have a handful of items...... and am blocking someone with a full trolley load, i will lineup in any register as i see fit.

Simply place the item in the bagging area. There's no requirement to use a bag.

I don't really ever go to the supermarket anymore, maybe once a month tops. I do all my shopping online, $8 for someone else to grab my stuff and deliver once a week is great value. I have used the self serve checkout before at Big W, bit of a small area to work with if you have a few large items...

I work in a supermarket and I always see people scanning Bananas as carrots. I usually ignore it since most people will claim innocent and ignorance if I caught them out. I guess, the money saved from wages is greater than the stock loss with these machines. Most people with more than 10 items usually use the check out chicks and these machines break down hence always needing someone stationed there.

Can't remember who but a comedian had a good joke about this....

"self service check-out.... so now I am doing the cashier's job... what's next? Do they want me to stock the shelves too?"

but I love it... such a time saver

Hate them.

Sometimes I don't mind talking to the check out guy/girl, and sometimes I CBF, but I ****ing hate it that the option has been taken away from me.

Might aswell save petrol and do the shopping on the internet.

Can be a fail when someone pulls out the credit card to pay because they have to wait for a supervisor to check the signature, as well as when someone has a big trolleyload.

Otherwise they are excellent. I use them whenever I get the opportunity. The Big W ones in particular as are convenient given that most people prefer to go to the old style checkout.
