Just as importantly Reilly, van berlo, shirley and doughty must go and try to be traded off at end of the year. The 3 that played yerterday tried hard but all 4 of them have had too many chances. Granted the stats will show van berlo and doughty have been up there most of the year but it may mean bargaining power for the crows.

Getting Schammer for van berlo and monfries for reilly would suit me fine. The other 2 may be more difficult to unload. Mattner and Welsh have gone. Any chance of coming back

I wonder why Jericho wont be picked again this week?

Anyone calling for Reilly to be traded clearly doesn't understand his position on and off the field.
Yes he's had a few injury problems throughout his career, but when he's fit and on song there is no finer midfielder in the AFC side.
Not withstanding that, he has been BEYOND instrumental in convincing players to re-sign and stay true to the Tri Colours.
As for VB, what's he done wrong thus far to deserve being traded?

On one of the AM stations tonight they were discussing Walker, and one of the commentators (Daryl Smith I think?) repeated a few times that Walker is not ready for the AFL due to his non existent second efforts.

Having this aspect of his game highlighted in front of a full house, a national television audience and in the post-match review by the likes of Goodwin and Edwards might be just the tonic.

Playing undersized kids in key positions at a young age runs the risk of long term injuries. Thats my only worry.

Walker could go out for Norwood next weekend and do a knee, the fact that the AFL is faster and some tougher guys in defense will only mean he has a chance of having his arse kicked.

Saying this IF Walker would to come in he would have to be alongside Tippett and probably Jericho at least as other marking and leading forwards so as not to be the lone hitting post.

Ultimately a forward is measured by the amount of goals he kicks. I think he has ticked that box to the best of his ability.

Secondary would be defensive pressure. He will probably fail in this department. But seeing as Neil Craig will only probably play him for 50% game time, I dont see the harm in making tex run his guts out for a half of footy. If it works we can all sit around and say what a master stroke his selection was. If it fails at least it will motivate and let him know what he needs to work on in the Pre-season.

The showdown is perfect stage. If I remember correctly a young Chad Cornes who probably wasn't ready debuted in a showdown. No connection, but the big stage is home for some people.

Except for one bit! I think he does do alot of forward line pressure and that is what we are missing.
We dont have many speeding forward.. well we dont; but he can run; and he likes to pressure to opposition in the forward line.

I think there's a high chance that K-mac will get delisted at the end of the year, there would be no point in playing him. He hasn't shown anything this year at all.

I hope we take some risks and play some of these younger guys, but it seems Neil Craig's always taken the safer approach on and off the field

Yes that is what I meant. I have heard he has kicked a couple of classy goals as you mentioned, just unfortunate I haven't seen them myself I seem to remember him fumbling around a bit, but I guess that was only on a few occasions

He does still have 1 year to run on his contract. Signing him for an extra 2 years was one of the dumbest decisions the club has made in years.

The club now has 3 options (in order of preference):

1. KMac retires gracefully, removing the club's obligation to pay out the contract.
2. Terminate the contract early, paying out KMac's salary for 2009 (which is then included in the 2009 salary cap).
3. KMac is retained on the team list for 2009.

I will be bitterly disappointed if the club opts for #3.

Even Michael Voss had to be retained on Brisbane's list for a year, despite the fact he had already retired.

Paying him the salary in some other way would have the AFL investigators onto the Crows for possible salary cap breaches.

Because you can fill his position on the list with a youngster. Have to pay the salary, regardless of whether or not he's on the list. Assuming he's not playing (and that appears certain), what's to be gained by retaining him on the list?

Actually, it happens all the time. If a player feels that they have nothing left to contribute and are only holding the team back, some of them do actually pull the plug early. My guess is that arrangements have been made for them to be looked after, but these arrangements are rarely made public.

Yes it happens, but the vast majority of times is mid-season, ala Peter Bell, where the blokes wages is already included in the current years salary cap, and the club just pays out the money that has already been accounted for.

I'm sure other blokes have retired a year or so early, but I'm also equally sure that some salary cap breaches have occurred in those, or at least most of those, cases.

The Crows would be at a disadvantage if they tried to make some "under the table" payments, compared to other clubs in Melbourne for example, because their accounts have to tally not only for the AFL, but also for the SANFL.

I reckon the Crows are between a rock & a hard place on this one, and will probably cut their losses and delist McGregor end of season.

Given the arse at the end of a contract is so much easier, and I doubt Andrew Crowell had a significant salary.

Still an AFL team has to be ruthless these days, it's the way they have been forced to do business.

I'd be interested to know what Freo are doing about Matt Carr's salary. From memory he is/was contracted for 2009, yet he decided to retire mid-2008.

I could be wrong on this one. I'm sure other people can come up with plenty of examples.

Craig considers Walker, others for Showdown

CROWS coach Neil Craig says he won’t hesitate in playing untried teenager Taylor Walker in Sunday's Showdown XXV.

Walker, fifth in the SANFL goalkicking, has excited Adelaide fans with his impressive form for Norwood and is a chance to make his senior debut this week.


Also in the mix to replace injured duo Brett Burton and Jason Porplyzia are Ken McGregor, Luke Jericho, Nick Gill and Trent Hentschel.
Hentschel, who has missed one week with a hamstring strain, has not played since wrecking his knee against Port Adelaide late in 2006 but is expected to train at full pace on Thursday.


Gill has played two games for Adelaide this season but, like Jericho, was dropped back to the SANFL last weekend.


Craig said it was now a matter of weighing up what each individual would bring to the side.


"We’ve got a match committee this afternoon and obviously the forward set-up is a significant area for us, with the way it’s unfolded, and Jason Porplyzia and Brett Burton going down. They have been two really high-performing players for us this year and we’ve got some thinking to do," Craig said from the Balfours Showdown press conference on Wednesday.


"Taylor probably can’t do too much more than what he’s been doing in the SANFL, but we’ve got some options there. It’s not as if we’re looking at our list and saying, 'What are we going to do here?' I’m sure whoever gets selected will do well."


Craig described McGregor, who has been playing in defence for Woodville-West Torrens, as in 'good form' and dismissed suggestions that playing Walker would put too much expectation on the 18-year-old from Broken Hill.


"We’ve done that (blooded players) in Showdowns before. It is a special game and it is a high intensity game," he said. "You saw the last one, if you want a high intensity, strongly competitive game of footy, then go back and have a look at it again.


"I don’t have any apprehension at all in selecting [debutants] in a Showdown. In actual fact, it can be, long-term, a fantastic experience.
"I think experience does count, but I have no hesitation at all in picking a first-game player. You always weigh up experience versus the skills set a young guy brings in.


"A young guy will bring a huge amount of enthusiasm and, if you’ve seen Taylor play at all, you would’ve seen some of the skills he can bring to the game.


"You look at the attributes you need in that sort of game, the type of style you want to play and the opposition, in terms of who would pick up a McGregor compared to a Walker."


On Saturday, Craig all-but ruled out superstar Andrew McLeod making his return from injury this week, but the five-time All-Australian is progressing well and will be tested at Thursday’s main training session.


"I think he is [a chance to play]. I spoke to Andrew this morning, he did a pretty solid session yesterday and pulled up well from it," Craig said.


"It looks like he'll attempt to train flat-out for the full session tomorrow, so if he gets through that obviously he'll be a strong consideration."

If you read between the lines NC has all but said Walker will debut, by saying he couldn't really do anything else, that tells me that he's a fair shot at it. McGregor comment -Pfft! Macca and Walker in is very nice if you ask me!!
