Sheedy Calls For 16 Players Per Side

Lets go 11 a side and have 1 player who has to remain in the goal square, and he can wear a different coloured shirt.

Change the shape of the ground. And probably change the shape of the ball.

Make it happen Blighty !!

Can we widen the goal posts please too?

Throwing has been in the game since 2016.

A net would be brilliant. Removes the issue with goal reviews. Its either in the net or its not !!
Shorten the quarters to 12 minutes and give each team a specific amount of time before they have to take a shot at goal as well, that'll speed the game up and reduce congestion

Doesn't that then deter blokes playing for the footy from actually winning it? Why do the hard work of putting your head over it and picking it up if you can then be pinged without any chance of disposing of it?

You only get pinged if you apply a correct tackle, not some of these flimsy slapping of the arms that gets rewarded these days.

The umpire should always protect the guy trying to get the ball, there is no reason for that to change.

And any player who just wants to sit back and wait for another to pick up the ball is nothing more than a chip-scab.

It ultimately will be zones. Why? Leigh Matthews is on this new fukkarse committee, and he is HELL BENT on introducing zones.
I hate the idea, but I think its going to happen.

The AFL suckles at the teet of Leigh ******* Matthews!

Anything but zones. The freedom and 360 nature is what makes AFL fun to play. A ball bobbling to stop right next to the 50 metre line with players standing there unable to cross to grab it would be the dumbest look ever

You could implement a form of zones without ever having to worry about that happening.

Ditch the MRO as well, can just have a system where players are only allowed 6 or so penalties against them a game, or 1 serious infringement, before they get sent off the field.
Might need a bigger bench for this..

I agree with this idea. The game has evolved into something quite different to what it was just thirty years ago. Defenders need to attack and forwards need to defend.

So, after all that evolution changing the fabric of the game, all those rule changes and smearing grey areas all over the Laws of Australian Football, why not introduce a black-and-white rule that would take four players out from around the ball? Chris Scott said that when Geelong played 16-a-side trial games the nature of the sport was not altered except it became more free-flowing.

Think about this: take the two worst players your club selects every week, drop them and you never have to play them again. Each week, 396 AFL players take to the field. Imagine taking the 36 worst of those players off the parks, removing four spuds from each match.

It would reduce congestion, raise the standard of the entire league and of each game. Moreover, it is a hell of a lot better and less radical than zones. I say do it.

Why do they need to try and change the rules every time a new strategy is found?

Give it a couple of years and coaches will find another tactic and move on. It's the job of losing teams to find a tact that beats the current method. Round and round it goes as it has done for decades.

Change the rules now and the same applies - rule change... look for new strategy... find one... win flag... whinge whinge... rule change...

Pay the free kicks and the congestion will reduce.

Yep totally this.

A while ago the AFL decided that stoppages (be it ball in, ball up, or free kick) was the key metric. Reduce them and the game would be better for it.

So now players push the envelope more and more with the rules and, scrimmages ensue.
